How far for a promotion?

"Oh Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, you know? We were all wondering how you would react upon discovering the nature of the peculiar test we put our board candidates through… and so far, you’ve met our expectations, because what we need is a puppet.
A pleasant guy, with no ideas of his own, a helpful smile, and just desperate enough for a promotion to let himself be humiliated like this. Because we don’t want innovation. We don’t want opinions. We don’t want “strategic vision” or authentic leadership. We just want another name on the board who will vote the way we tell them. Sign what we tell them. Nod when we tell them. Exist, but not bother us — and the show you're putting on right now is simply your way of telling us: “Yes, I sell myself cheap.”
We love it.
It works for us.
Let yourself be used, and in return, we’ll give you a nameplate, your own office, a five-figure monthly salary…
…and an invisible chain, perfectly fitted."
