What was the common card?

Notcreepycreeper

Im kinda hoping arthur doesnt become a dragon rider. Or if he does its not yet/here. Given the build up of how rare legendary dragons are, the plot armor would be strong. Also im enjoying athur ALMOST embarking on variou s paths, then having them cut short for whatever reason. Its letting him learn and grow, while also giving him less than traditional limits for a progression fantasy.

Waiting for a matching dragon to hatch while collecting card shards in secret might not be such a bad idea at all. He needs to age a bit before he can get involved with bigger conflicts in the plot, so waiting a few years is actually ideal to that end. And he can always just call it quits if he hasn't gotten lucky after a handful of years. He'll have cards, knowledge, and skills aplenty. Still, having a dragon would give him greater reach and renown. And there are also the concerns about his father to consider, which are almost certainly going to affect his judgment in that regard.

Ryan

Yeah agree with Seth plus there’s already obvious tension of getting killed for your cards so if leadership tolerated anything so blatant then no legendary card holders would willingly join up

seth dauer

I imagine the rarity of a legendary dragon hatching would contribute. Sure they could steal it, but then wait a decade for another legendary? How long until a compatible one comes around? Leadership would be foolish to squander resources

Pebble

I guess no dragon below Legendary will even consider Arthur, given his card. Since realistically he could wait decades for one of such rank to hatch, he won't necessarily become a Dragon Rider, unless the author really wants Arthur to be one. So Arthur can take advantage of his access to the Hive, both for cheaper stuff and better jobs, until he's ready to ditch the place if that's his plan (or run away because someone finds out his real card and wants to take it). Arthur will also now have access to a Dragon and a Dragon Rider to answer all his (and our) questions about cards and Hives.

Don't think that the kidnapping is such a big deal. He wasn't hurt and still given the choice, if he actually wants to become a rider. I'd just book it under alternative recruitment options xD And Kenzie seems to be alright, she's like a supportive older thieving sister. In general a hive seems like a good option for a carded kid in this harsh world

Alphafenrir401

He's essentially being drafted into the military lol (recruited)

MagicWafflez

idk he's vulnerable to all silvers while he's not "recruited"... this way even if a more experienced dragon smells him, he's already claimed so they won't try to turn him in as a legendary I worry what will happen with the legendary card when a dragon picks him, but without a dragon picking him, he has a target on his back, anyone can and would kill him for that card.

Touch

Exactly

GuyWhoReadsALot

I like how she cons him into thinking that stealing a cheap card is much worse than kidnapping. He ought to knock her out and escape from these evil psychos.

MagicWafflez

he's not, he left the card behind a light fixture in that hallway when he left. now he's going to retrieve it

MagicWafflez

... so, is there any protection for him from people murdering him for the legendary card when the dragon hatches? that seems important to know... also, won't the stolen card be found out if he doesn't fence it properly?

ARHHH

Definitely dumb to go back and rob in the same place again

Simon Hughes

He mentioned seekers. He doesn't know if any cards can trace stolen goods, and doesn't know if the store can track missing items. He ditches the card so that if it is tracked he isn't in danger. If the card is still in place later, then he knows it's not been found or traced, so he's safe to pick it back up. I vaguely remember seeker types being mentioned in the story before, but I could be wrong. Either way, even if it's never been mentioned before, it's a very reasonable precaution for a person to take when they are aware of how much they don't know about cards and what powers might be possible.

Tycho Green

In case the shopkeepers noticed a missing card and would force everyone in the shop to show every card they had or determine what exact card someone else has. No one would have complied to do the former, while nothing mentioned in the story so far indicates the latter is possible. That means you can position yourself between Arthur was overly cautious and Arthur’s logic was flawed. As soon as he got it, he could have kept it.

Pete

Why did he ditch the card?

Alex Matheny

Second sentence, now should probably be not.
