Edward Spencer Agoston

Didn’t Joy absorb both the poison and nullification cards? So why he say One of them is Joys now?

Alex

If they get the card. Arthur didn't hold up his end of the bargain, even though the mystic told him to. Then again, if he had given the card the mind singer would be even stronger and probably hurting even more people. Just further away so Arthur doesn't have to be confronted by the consequences of his actions.

Thaldor

Oh good gravy, a whole darn free hive, that's no small amount of collateral. And hey, the Mind Singer did say it would leave the kingdom 😬

Amber Gregory

Agree about the flexibility of cards. There's obviously a lot of card knowledge that's been lost through suppression and limited access. No thanks to corrupt scholars

Garagathor

"Then let speak" -> "Then let me speak"

Honour Rae

They haven't officially been asked yet, though they are most certainly "guests" of the free hive. Both them, Arthur, and Brix are in a weird place right now where they aren't prisoners but aren't exactly allowed to leave either.

Abdulmohsen

When were Joy and Cressida asked to join the free hive? And wouldn't Arthur have reacted even more strongly if he thought they might join the free hive than he did when Tamya and Len did? Because saying that Joy and Cressida haven't been accepted yet implies that they have asked to join the hive.

Honour Rae

Thank you! I don't expect people to comment but of course I appreciate it when they do :)

Honour Rae

He did mean Joy and Cressida. Len and Tamya had utility sea-water cards. Arthur and Brix don't have any strictly combat cards. Cressida has her fire bear summons. So I guess... technically it could be "but you let Cressida in". Though those two are a pair. :) Edit: And then it was clarified in the next line that they haven't been accepted as members yet.

Honour Rae

Yeah I just couldn't let that go. ;)

Undead Writer

Thanks for the chapter!

I would say that card sets are less rigid than people claim. We already know that newly created cards respond somewhat to the will and desire of the creator. I'd bet that there is some sort of "pull" when you have a higher level of magic built into you that allows you to skew the odds a bit more and create a card with an effect that is desired and will fit into a set. We have already seen 2 dragons become whole through alteration and 1 instance of cards that weren't initially in a set be slightly altered to fit together via a Joy quest if I remember correctly. As far as new cards remaking old I'd say thats misunderstanding at best and an outright lie at worst. With the sheer number of cards floating around the whole world for as long as they have I'm willing to bet there would have to have been copies at some point, maybe something like an extra dimensional pool of perks that the coalesced magic pulls from to complete existing cards as if they were permanent physical laws in the world. It's unlikely that there exist actual doubles at any one time, but destroyed cards I'll bet can be remade, after all they seem to rot fairly regularly at the common level.

I was referring to how he was able to push his resistance as a sort if aoe or however it was to help shake people out of the mind singers control during the eruption. Wording was confusing I suppose. No place would likely be completely safe and he'd have to leave sometime which gives them an opening. Oh probably. But killing them may be easier said than done. And no telling how much damage they can do before that. Given how close he came to getting killed by the king the MS could arrange a scenario he can't get out of without significant losses.

I've been thinking this awhile, but the idea of sets being permanently ruined has bothered me. Essentially destruction or removal of magic. Alternatively shards represent an influx or creation of magic. Which is also abhorrent to my mind. Like a balloon with a hole air leaks out of and a hole that more air is blown in. At some point it'll either pop from too much air or deflate forever as all the magic is destroyed. I think it makes more sense that when you make card from shards it's restoring a lost card. And when you evolve a set, it's doing the same with a missing higher tier card.

Menphy

thanks for the chapter!

Amber Gregory

I've spent 3 days gorging myself on every bite of this delicious story, and now I'm here feeling guilty that I haven't stopped more often to comment and say wow, I'm just enjoying this so much, it's great. Thank you!

Abdulmohsen

The quote is you let Joy and Cressida in, as in they were asked to join and they agreed. That didn't happen. Joy and Cressida weren't even asked to join the free hive yet, let alone accepted the invitation. That's why I think this quote is a mistake and Honour Rae meant Len and Tamya, not Joy and Cressida.

Secular Reason

While the idea of gtting cards to defend against mind-manipultion for his retinue (and family/friends) is a sound one, how you expect "spatial resistance" to do that I am... confused on. They're not even related concepts. What he needs is a place that is safe, where he can officially keep the people he cares about instead of having them hiding. Even if it's "official" only in the sense that the take on new identities, just like he once did when he "became" his best friend. And then be able to protect that whole place, as any card the even would protect entire groups of people would 1) be a constant drain on his mana and 2) only work while he was nearby, keeping him trapped and thus an easier target for the mind-singer. Or to just kill the damn mind singers.

Secular Reason

Len and Tamya didn't have combat cards IIRC, and so can't be who is being talked about. Their whole point was "here we can be happy and praised for our non-combat cards". Joy and Cressida do, and are welcome to join. It's the Arthur and Brixaby whom the hive "doesn't kow what to do with" yet. Joy and Cressida just haven't accepted yet.

Secular Reason

I seem to recall the kingdom (and the King specifically) having truthsayers who can verify what you say by checking your mind. They would then, of course, use these on whoever is turning the cards in. Ask if these are all the cards. Ask if they KNOW that because they were present at the raid and saw all the cards (chain of custody style questions) or what. Ask if they have reason to suspect that combat cards were somehow slipped out of the cards turned in, etc, etc, etc. There are ways.

Abdulmohsen

"But you let Joy and Cressida in," Brixaby said." Shouldn't this be Len and Tamya?

Decide

Thank you for the chapter! Now we have the baddie we've had for awhile, maybe it'll be resolved soon. In the mean time, is the hive that abducted him friend or are they foe? In addition, would the other Call Of cards be strictly combat oriented? Could another free hive have them? And how In the Broken Cards are the kindgoms so lax with the free hives? I'm sure they know what the nobles are supposed to have, but if that doesn't match up with what's given, they the kingdoms would blow up the hives under Mythic Might. We know Arthur-sama is in a kingdom that sells cards between nobles secretly. There's no way the free hive can operate there, since what they give wouldn't match what should be owned by the nobles. Imagine if the Rowantree dukedom fell after the card sellings succeeded, and was raided under the kings request, and the card list wasnt updated, the free hive would be totally screwed since the MoB Card wouldn't have been there. PS: Arthur should be more like Brix and start ripping and tearing. Or shove a book in his mind library. PSS: I hope his current mana card isn't a piece of the Master of Magic. That'll take awhile to fix if that were the case.

Voror

I hadn't actually thought about the Mind Singer being behind it but yeah that fits with the behavior. Was wondering how soon it would be before that came back to bite him. Honestly wondering if Brix destroying the card is going to wind up screwing them over in the long run in a manner far more damaging if they'd just handed it over. Apparently an entire free hive is potentially aimed at hurting Arthur and anyone he cares for. His father is likely dead for certain or turned insane. Maybe the woman Calvan is seeing ends up turned into a spy or sleeper agent to hurt Arthur at the opportune moment. Anyone potentially in his retinue is likely up for manipulation. Really Arthur might want to see if he can get cards to protect his retinue. He does have that spatial resistance he used I suppose. Maybe he could somehow just work to have that up passively to detect this sort of thing.

hmDrake

Yep, I figured destroying that card would bit him.

hmDrake

Thanks!
