I see this a lot in the tech industry (as usual, the games industry acts like a microcosm of the tech industry because it is) where people say that a font is blurry if you zoom in to 1600%. They claim they can see this on displays with DPIs so high that it's scientifically proven they can't. I never understood this kind of behavior and I wonder if it's the same thing you describe here, a result of games companies just lying to people.
