extra fun fact: the word taboo comes from the Polynesian word tapu, meaning sacred or forbidden (usually meaning forbidden in the sense of a place or object only used for ceremonial purposes)

I've been living in New Zealand the last 8 years and talking about this more violent side of Maori history is VERY taboo in modern NZ and will get you immediately labeled an extreme right-wing racist. Great to get your "terrible person" perspective on it :D Would love to hear more stories from this time, you don't hear much about this history when you live there
