Given that this story was designed not to take a strong side on anything political, an inoffensive main character is what was called for. But it was a bit of a disservice to Aya, and I'm making up for it in the TG reboot.

When I was still trying to Both Sides it, I had her as a middle of the road "apolitical" type. She hated politics and didn't like to think about it. I'd like to think she would have figured out eventually that this position only serves to benefit and enable authoritarianism.

If Aya's the inoffensive MC does that mean she's supposed to be moderate or that she's reduced to being the least offensive? It could be both but it would be bad for Aya as a character

One of those rare times when "you're the least offensive" kinda sounds like an insult.
