Talespinner Lore

She wants to be able to use her shiny new magic katana properly, and cool factor from watching anime back on Earth probably.

Spears in formation are very different weapons than your used to. Effectively you attack the person in front of you or to either side which is much easier than the kind of long sweeping motions with most weapons. Which is why halberds and other weapons with a lot of weight at the end show up. In terms of overall weight, that’s needed to survive combat between superhuman opponents. Metal fatigue ended up breaking weapons over time, which is why many historic weapons seem over engineered. They really would break from heavy use not so much heavy blows.

Ty for the chappie. I remain curious to see where you'll take this story :)

lenkite

Why is she learning the [Sword] ? Forging a sword is fine but learning it to wield it seriously makes little sense. With her speed, the [Spear] is a better weapon for her as she will always be able to maintain her melee range. Use an [Axe] or [War Hammer] if the opponent gets closer - depending on whether opponent is lightly or heavily armored. And please forge and use [Crossbows] at range.

Njordt

Not to egg you or anything, but your vacation must be going swell if you are this late :P

Nick

I like the changes you made about the spear heads. It makes much more sense now. But, I think the explanation for her sword skills progress still needs work. Maybe something about how because it's a dedicated weapon/combat skill she actually needs to practice against an opponent to raise the skill? If she just practices on her own she'll hit a skill ceiling and won't progress very far or fast, but if she's training with someone else she'll progress faster. You can even explain why she didn't run into the issue with her axe/hammer skills as they both have civilian applications with smithing, mining and wood cutting etc. Her dagger skills on the other hand have levelled up because she's used them in combat against goblins and also practiced with them regularly since that day.

The sleep issue seems like meditation at 100 might be able to fix it by its self.... Soul sense can bring you within your soul in which you can then meditate which might be an even better solution

Miriduriel

Wrote a long post on how the MC can fix her future issues with Insomnia without messing without messing with the established setting of the story posted it and it was a wall of text edited by adding spaces posed it again but the post did not change so f5 the page and it is gone :D so not gonna do that again here is a link to those interested on how to fix the sleep issue since it will haunt my dreams if i don't but something up about it. https://www.gateworld.net/wiki/Kelnorim

Thanks for writing! Sword skills might also be harder to level up because they don't have a nonviolent part. You can get diverse experience in knives, axes and hammers by whittling, lumberjacking and blacksmithing. But I can't think of any use for a sword other than combat

ClapTrapCL4TP

cant get the idea of Aaliyah asking if her mother would like to learn to wield a weapon, then including the morning runs they would spar with wood weapons, a staff would probably be ideal considering its both inconspicuous and has decent reach. That or a katana.

Ungrave

Thanks for the chapter!

Ungrave

Wait, wouldn't having your boating trip end "swimmingly" usually be more of an issue? Personally I'd delay a chapter if that were to happen lol.

Gremlin Jack

Very nice chapter, but I have to ask - is the closely detailed description of how she forges the barbecue really necessary to the story? I'm going through all that detail, but I find myself skimming. I know that the crafting scenes are where we get to see her innovate her mana and metallurgy skills, but the barbecue didn't involve something innovative other than being a barbecue.

notation for foot and inch... ' for foot '' for inch

Toni Pampliega

I think it lacks a meeting with foreign adventurer(s) that need repair or some smith work. That can come handy to a bit of worldbuilding. Also, A mage that teach her some usefull skill or spell, discovering secret but not saying any thing. Something like that. By the way, for the town, i should suggest shields and helmets. Chainmls as well.

CyclopsSlayer

Thanks for the chapter! One of the few stories really keeping me hooked these days.

Weirdly enough there's a medieval weapon that would be absurdly effective against the spiders called a "Bill Hook". War Bill Hooks are converted from a specialized axe used to cut through 1 inch wide branches that are used as basically medieval rebar in construction (you can still find trees grown to produce it in Europe today, they grow normal up to about 2m then explode into hundreds of tiny branches). Both the weapon and farm implement consist of a hook with a bladed inner surface in combat they would be used to hook onto shields or cut saddles. They were just as effective as halberds but they were so cheap and had a peasant stigma so most people that could afford something else avoided them as a status thing. That doesn't apply here, and since the conversion is mostly a handle swap unless you want to get fancy and a few villagers probably already have one in their tool closet.

Haha, like the chapter. Wonder if she will re-invent the compound bow or what her idear is. She is a kinda workahollic, but i like the way its woven into her character that it appears natural to what she usually does. :) Also, can someone spare some help for the poor ISU user over here? I dont know if i got this one right: [b] 7’ 6’’ pole and a 1’ blade. The shorter spears will have a 6’ pole and an 18’’ blade. [/b] So, these ' and " seem to be interchangable, but i dont get what they stand for. I was thinking it was inch (2.5cm), but as the long one had a 1 while the short one had a 18, i got confused. Does the Long one only have a smal sharp tipp or something?

Dirkk Diggler

i cant wait for emily/christopher to meet aaliyah and hopefully train her. I want del to given in and teach her runic magic aswell

Giperman

Aaliyah х Ronald?

"If I do shut the skill of it feels like my world loses a part of its color" small correction needed

But, cant it be both? The type if wepon becomes the nobel wepon beacuse its harder. And then people belive its harder because its the Nobel wepon

Cobbly

Somehow, i wanna see her get a boyfriend

FillerArc

Spears and Bows are the standard village weapons. But this fact is also misleading. In Europe, yes. Other parts of the world ? More complicated than that. But yeah, most places tend to have some form of a staff (Treat it as an upgraded and more sturdy stick)

Michael Buchler

Glad someone realizes how awesome spears are! Much easier for your average villager to learn than a sword, and most farmers will be familiar with polearm-like tools (e.g. Pitchforks, hoes, etc.). The extra reach a spear gives you is also invaluable, since your average villager would panic in closer quarters that swords force you to engage in.

fuble878

She almost had a mental breakdown over goblin... No mater how much stronger she is than a group of bandits she is not going to be mentally well afterwards.

SpaceGoddess76

I think it would be cool if she learned more martial arts to aid her weapon skills. Also it would be interesting to see her travel to some other towns to see what the rest of the world looks like. It works also be cool to see others towns react to her training or have some bandits try and kidnap/steal from her and she totally destroys them and then know one from the other town believes her until she proves it through strength.

Niko

on the topic of swords. they were not a noble weapon, they are self defense weapon. spears work well in formations with other spear-wielders and are even better with shields. swords are for self defense in a one on one setting. it is fine if you want to have different weapons harder to learn then others it is your world that you are creating. i think we need more a reason why though, maybe bump up the tiers? i am sure you have check out other stuff but if you have not seen Shadiversity on youtube, i highly recommend checking him out just for ideas alone.

Morog T Tiny

For most hand weapons there are more than one style, the katana would require different skills than a rapier or cutlass or two hander. Archery, are you knocking the bow on the left or right, using a thumb ring or fingers? with the higher strengths in your world a steel spear would be possible for people with really high strength and would give much longer reach, but using a solid steel shaft, it would weigh, way more than 20 lbs. Can she make a hollow steel handle? Really thin bodied steel spears are used for throwing. Thank you for the effort to craft a story..

Steven Palmer

I'm not a good writer but I'm loving your story. Thank you

Osprey36

I would recommend looking up a reflex bow, as they tend to be quite compact while allowing for a high draw weight and a long draw. When unstrung, a reflex bow would curl up into a "C" shape in the opposite direction, which is also kinda cool

ClapTrapCL4TP

You should have had a logical reason for swords being harder to gain skill levels in, for example the amount of variation a sword could have would've sufficed. Spears are mostly similar unless you categorise Glaive and/or Halberd under the spear skills. Most other weapons don't have enough variation to be classified under different skills. You should also classify any martial artist skills on being of the same difficulty as the sword for the amount of variation that could also have.

Wredniak2003

Given the amount of research you seem to put into forging I am really surprised at the idea of serrated blade. And it was supposed to be on the spear?! I am assuming if she shares that idea with Del he will shoot her down in an instant. Serrated blades are such a strange fantasy trope and in my opinion the second most unrealistic thing after oversized swords. I guess some times is used to show how evil and cruel the villain is but even then I don’t think it works. The problem with serrated blades is that even hair or clothes would make it less effective, you don’t need an armor. When contrasted with properly sharpened straight edge, which is perfectly capable of doing “draw cut” the only advantage would be the wound being more jagged which may bleed more or be harder to heal. The disadvantages would unfortunately be more numerous. Even if we set aside fact it would be more difficult to create and sharpen (I don’t think sharpening it on whetstone would be feasible), it would be hell to maintain. It would make stabbing more difficult and stabbing is something you do with a spear. The blade could more easily be stuck inside the opponent and I believe it would chip more easily. Serrated blades do happen on weapons but the never really are intended for combat. It adds functionality to the blade as a tool for example to chop wood. On top of my head only serrated weapons I can recall were Aztec obsidian swords (and this is more due to material being used), arrows and dull serrated blades meant to party swords as offhand weapon (even then I personally believe shield would work better). I guess a special spear used for example for hunting when you are supposed to leave it in the animal/monster could make sense. As primary weapon highly doubtful. As for the weight of the weapon, yeah people may be stronger but carrying the weapon and wielding it effectively is two different matter. Heavier weapon is much less maneuverable and making stoping its momentum much harder which may lead to user being easy target. Most people are surprised how light swords are, and then they are surprised how hard it is to swing that light thing for more than couple minutes. I personally know more about swords and even the heaviest rarely exceed 2 kg. For spear I guess double that would be max. One of the most effective ways of dealing with the spear is getting past the tip. One you accomplish that the spear user is in trouble, so the most important thing is the control and ability to redirect tip of the spear easily to effectively threaten the opponent. If you consider the spear is made not for elite but for average person I don’t think increasing its weight to double the weight of heaviest halberd is practical. Additionally this is a blades weapon so most of the time you cut or stab your opponent and for that a mass of the weapon is not the deciding factor. For axes or war hammers you want as heavy as you can get, just even there limitation of how heavy you can actually get is much lighter than most people assume.

Nick

Thanks for the chapter. With regards to the weapons, have you considered having her make halberds? Essentially a spear with an axe on the end. Could be an interesting way to level up her axe skills and also an effective weapon for the village woodcutters like her father.

Arkeus

Not exactly a fan of Sword being harder than other weapons to learn. I also think a lot of longer spears (3/4m?) should be dex based.

Solarlancer

noting much to say you did a good job in this chapter, nothing to complain about. thank you for the chapter.

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter! Glad to see she checked if the trade was ok by him and asked for his strength for the bow, too:-) Also cool to see Camden being proactively headman-y and warning the surrounding villages.

Kristaps Kramins

Rolands POV and opinion of Aaliyah would be cool. Possible BFF situation?

Kristaps Kramins

Damn! I want another chapter.

Niko

Sward [Sword] Arts (LV1) 100exp ...flesh but would get more cough [caught] up on armor.

Niko

thanks for the new chapter. keep it up, this story fills my crafting fix. as far as last chapter it was good to see Aaliyah from a different perspective when she was dealing with her issues. we have had her POV before when she has gone thru bad times so a change was cool.

ZCochraine!%

Good chapter, shows her character flaw is a workaholic and power leveller. I can’t wait to see what happen at level 100! Next chspter her perents got to know the wonderfulness that is grilled food, maybe later as a flex on the fire metal and make a BBQ.

Call0013

I wonder if She could manage to get Rest and Sleeping Skills.
