Why fold the steel? from the impression I got it already was very pure, so the folding compromises its integrity, and doesn't give any benefit, the quenching also was very weird, considering you want to quench swords slowly because they become brittle otherwise. Lastly, what even is the point of making a fire sword? it literally makes your weapon less useful by immediately cauterizing the wounds you cause

Yeah, I have to say the mom treats her like she's 11 at best and did something horrible, instead of basically an accomplished adult who did the right thing and saved everyone ass. I'd have moved out (thru the wall if necessary) halfway thru any of these scenes. It's not coming across as caring it's coming across as "no wire hangars!". More sick and manipulative than "funny exaggeration of caring using anime cliches". Presumably not how it's meant to be read, but that's the way it reads to me.

Infinite42

Mom is frustrating but Aliyah's response is more so. You mean to tell me she's letting her mom keep her from working on what could be life saving tools for the village for close to a week? There's massive magic spiders basically loom over them....Where is her backbone.. Put me off a bit. Why is an 'adult' getting grounded?

tibbish

Hahhaa that Mom is NOT abusive. She does get emotionally pushy and/or demanding at times but that is a totally different thing. And its not unheard of for parents to get that way with their kids no matter their kids age. Especially if the kid is still living under their roof.

tibbish

Parents will typically treat their 40yr old children as 'kids'. Nothing abusive or unusual at all about that.

Great post but I think the author isn't a pro metal worker so they just can't get every detail right. Also felt like maybe they were trying to add a little drama/suspense to the chapter by having her do that (which I felt was unnecessary but whatev). Weeeeell not get every detail right AND post on time. I love it when they get the details right but I love it more when they post on time myself

Why doesn't she stan up to her abusive mother? I mean... she should be way stronger than her. It's hard to understand why she puts up with this kind of treatment. It's not like she had much of a choice. I mean, what was the alternative? Moving the whole village away? This mother of hers ran away from her own family to be with her father. And now she behaves like an overprotective matron regarding her daughter who is nearing double her level? That doesn't seem very rational to me. She should have had a few years time to process, that her daughter is not normal.

Why use the clay when she was going to mana quench it anyway? Smiths used the clay when quenching it in oil because it would cool it slower, but the way you explained it was the mana quenching was very fast which is not something you want and quenching too fast makes the steel brittle, also why they used oil instead of water. The bend of a katana is caused because the spine of the katana is thick and it contracts more because of that. The spine of the katana is much softer because they need it to be otherwise the blade could just snap in half being softer would stop cracks from going through the entire blade but the sharp edge of the blade of a katana is very brittle and prone to cracking. Traditional katana smithing is not something you need when it's made of spring steel which is something the dwarves or stonekin should know how to make which makes the MC efforts pretty pointless. Also, why did she need to fold the fire-steel? the japanese smiths needed to do so because they couldn't fully melt iron ore in their forges so the iron had really high carbon content, fold serves to remove a good amount as well as to make the carbon more uniform within the steel. the steel the MC was working with was molten for long enough to make the carbon uniform throughout the steel and it being spring steel folding would actually make the steel worse unless you can spin it in a way to make it work. Steel doesn't have a "grain" to it once it's been fully molten and the carbon is uniform throughout the steel, but if you make a grain through folding which we can justify for making mana paths then it all works, you can justify the need for folding and have the grain of steel be a necessary thing.

Your English seems better than many:-) As for the mom, it's not that there's no reason for her to be upset but rather that in the story she seems to be used almost exclusively as upset and domineering, with everyone cartoonishly afraid of her. Only offscreen is she mentioned to be more than that (earlier in the book was better), which does not have the same impact. Particularly jarring is the complete lack of any indication of pride or gratitude for the lives Aliyah saved, which would leave most conflicted instead of angry. Also, I'd like to point out how incredibly abusive using a truth forcing skill in any relationship is, especially if it's something she starts to generally use. As opposed to generating trust it would destroy trust (mostly trust Aliyah previously had in her mom) and breaks down the wiggle room needed to keep relationships healthy. Total violation of sanctity of thought, really - though it's likely not to work more than 2-3 times on Aliyah. If it did, it would require a serious talk where Aliyah would have every right to be exceptionally angry. Love the story, just adding my own $.02 on the issue folks (including me) had with this chapter specifically the recent behavior of the mom.

(Sorry for my English) It seems to me that people are biased against Aaliyah's mother! They just never tried to look from her point of view. When your loved ones go to battle and may not return, this will leave a deep mark on the person. We are readers and it is more difficult for us to correctly perceive what is happening. We know that Aaliyah will not die, because she is the main character of the book, but for her the fight against goblins (and especially with the spider) could be the last.

MadGod

She has Mental Resistance and it's reasonably high level, I would have expected it to block her mother's skill

Brad

Loving this story. Great characters and their development, Keep up the good work

Disclancer

Hey! Loving the story. Got to say her mother is coming across as somewhat selfish and un-sympathetic lately. But I'm sure it all comes from a good place ;). I will say that I'm abit confused about the life milestones in world and the appropriate independence for a person of Aaliyah's age. Some interaction with other village youths might help? I dunno, may just be me. You might want to use the word "tang" instead of handle for the measurements section, the handle will probably be slightly longer still once attached.

Cerber

No worries! Its a magic fanasy world! Magic and magic infused materials offsets everything anyway, so lemme get the next chapter already! I want to see our MC get some new skills and become a jack of all trades haha

Sebastian Viller

Agreed, it's gotten a bit jarring compared to how she was portrayed earlier in the story

Morog T Tiny

I agree.. a katana is a piece of art as weapon.. it is a horrible weapon to deploy against other swords though.. or metal armor.

Robert Mullins

Time to see if this fire katana was the trouble or not. I suspect it may be involved in future spider hunts.

Giperman

Oh no! Kids lying to the parents because they punish them for what they doing! How that even possible?! Seriously though, we never saw her mother's loving side. Only her punishing Aaliya for everything she does. I don't like her mother one bit

George Dashner

Great chapter! Is Aaliya old enough to move out. I think she is around the age when her brother made his own home. Our do girls never leave till they get married type of society. Her mother's reactions scream time to move if you want to have your own life.

M. Gunnarsson

Ain't it about time that Aaliya gets a skill that nulls whatever her mom is using? Lol.

Jonathan Timm

Could we get more info a out the mum we only ever see her being dominant and non of the loving mother part. It kinda throws the story off

Bad Timing

There are quite a lot of exotic ideas / techniques in this project of Aaliyah. I do wonder if Del is becoming curious / suspicious of where those ideas come from, of if he think this is just another facet of her genius.

Osprey36

I thought this was a great crafting chapter, and I think the only awkward part of the chapter was when you talked about the mana flows in the weapon. The description sounded a little strange for what should've been Aaliyah's first time trying to get the mana flow of the grains to fit right. I'm not totally sure how you could fix it, or if I'm just reading it weird though

Osprey36

Of course the mother could be bluffing, why would anyone try lying to her if she can tell you're lying right?

Solarlancer

i wonder if what mothers new skill does exactly and what tier it is (im guessing 3rd but there might be a chance of it being 4th)

Caleb Bear

Jem snail steel is a slightly softer steel that’s capable of withstanding both high and low temperatures and is known to take a beating before it brakes. jem -> gem, brakes -> breaks

Alex

I hope this katana, doesn't become the ultimate sword or some BS like that. Seriously sensing the rule of cool vibe.

Andrew

Thank you!

Ungrave

Can't wait to see her using the flaming katana! Thanks for the chapter!

Rallaster

Thanks for the chapter! I've been mashing that refresh button constantly all day waiting for the update and it was worth it. Well done.
