Shadowsmage

another fun chapter catching up :)

Overclocked

I dodon'get how she doesn't realize that be being capable of supplying the general with arrows, she becomes a target for enemy countries and also someone of national security concerns

DNAjester

If all he needs is 4 k to go full time just need to raise all pledges by 75c

David

My F5 button stopped workin :(

Stephen

This story is too good to stop. Please keep telling your story. Hope everything is ok.

Håvard

Looks like he at least somewhat ok, as RR notes he was active today, so we can hope everything is ok, it was just an hard chapter.

Derrick McDowell

I just sub'd it's such a good story, I'd hate to have it end. If so I hope he releases ideas of where it was going. I hate it when stories just end :( If he needs to take a break to plan the next ark or something, that's fine, I just wish he would communicate.

D

The author is sry 4 the delay and works on a double chapter 2 compensate. They will released around this time, next week. XD Jokes aside, kosnik, youre ok?

Dylan Coles

Author are you ok? Longer times between chapters is fine but the lack of any update is worrying

Dikfor

You could try "the runesmith" by Kuropon on royalroad. It's pretty new so not a lot of content yet, but it is decent. Updated 1-2 times a week.

Loyal Patreon follower

any good story like this one (thats newer)? :P

Obsidianking

Do you have a update on what's the delay ?

George Watermelon

Fucking real life! It is distracting author from really important thing!

Dikfor

Don't despair. Previous releases happen later. Might see one in like 10 hours.

thkiw

so... no chapter today? huh... nooooooo

Stephen Pearson

It’s late

Derrick McDowell

Is there a hidden chapter for higher patreons or is it late?

George Watermelon

You are wrong. We are 10 chapters forward the non-paid release. And author posting every 4-6 days, it is quite fast

It'sATap

I love this story but the release rate is soooo slow, make it feel subbing not worth :<

George Watermelon

Uhh, It looks like I have got drug withdrawal

Melnik5

Will there be a chapter today?

Comiak

I was thinking more along the lines of putting skills into something. There's a lot about exp, that stuff surrounding the soul, it can transfer from one person to another and it is responsible for skills affecting people so maybe the MC can put it into a tool or weapon or put someone else's exp into a weapon.

DNAjester

Will tomorrow be 5 days?

Mr Ove

I had a thought while re reading the story. It be cool if she unlocks a skill that lets her craft item/weapons with a soul, she is learning a lot about souls so it possible, like a sword that can lvl/get skills, has a mind and/or a soul weapon that is apart of the soul so like it soul bound and you can summon them. (Clearly this would be a t5 to t6) just a random thought I had rereading the story lol

Alex C

I admit, ever few days I go back and re-read all the last couple chapters waiting for the new one to come out...

Imspinnennetz

Is there a relation between the mana senses and the senses stat? I presume the senses stat is physical in nature. Aaliyah seems to rely heavily on her mana senses. Maybe she should consider increasing her physical senses stat or training it as that stat has not increased significantly.

Håvard

"move to draw" she might even have stoped herself before tuching the hilt of the sword. She did not draw it.

Eric

Should have her put her hand on her sword, not draw it. but good chapter, thanks :)

Call0013

hyperbole

Todd Kloos

" "Bashite, water attuned metal. It’s soft and easy to work with. Discovered by Elizial Bash sometime a thousand years ago. Ore sells for 4 gold for a hundred pounds or 8 gold for a ten-pound ingot.” Grey confidently spouts off a few facts regarding the metal before handing it back to me. “I can learn that in time,” Kervin quickly tells me, not wanting to be outdone. “You don’t have to worry about that,” I stop Kervin from worrying. “95% of what he just told me was useless."" This exchange seems a little strange to me. Three out of the four sentences that Mr. Grey says are focused on conveying "useful" information. Only 25% of what he said was "useless," so why does Aaliyah say that it was 95% useless?

Estrini

I liked this chapter alot more than the last 2.

DNAjester

Same here!!

Alteron

I would love to see mr. Greys report to headquarter. :-)

Jackson Ragland

Excited for the smithing!

Diego Morales-Heyser

Thank you for the chapter great writeing and pace I’ve been reading junk food books and let me tell you this chapter was a welcome relief from those. Thanks again

Obsidianking

Second, always do what's best for you as a writer, also deep forest exploration could be done with the help of the general. Could be like hey I don't want to leave my village until we solve wtf is going on in the forest. Also I really like the enchanting runes you have created like circuit boards, but I hope you can take some time and write out some rules for your self the world so that you don't have to retcon things later because it didn't make sense. All in all its a great read

Obsidianking

Lmao duck I didn't even think about things like that but hey they a endurance and vit stat for a reason to resist lead poisoning lol

Brell

This story remains a breath of fresh air to read. The mechanics underlying the skill system are compelling, and the protagonist is easy to root for. I also got a chuckle out of Aaliyah not recognizing when she was being hit with Charm skill. Some suggestions for the author: First off, before anything else, continue to write for yourself. Any other advice I offer up is well-intended, but use whatever process keeps you engaged in your creation. This said, the work tends to have spelling issues. Please consider a run through with tool such as Grammarly. A ten minute editing session will greatly improve the quality of work, as well as save you time on further edits. Given the income at stake, this looks like a good investment. The use of skills to dominate the world's social order is very believable, if also very unfortunate. At some point, I'd like to see the question asked if helping to defend the local feudal lords is really in the best interest of Aaliyah and her village. An aggressive neighbor would probably be worse for her, but it'd still be good for her to have reasoning to lend her talents to the cause. Alternately, leaving the question hanging while opportunistically working on her skill would work as well - just acknowledge that she worries regretting her empowerment of those who may one day oppress her. I'd also like to find out more about the spiders plaguing her village. They seem to be less of a problem now, perhaps because they've driven off or consumed most of the available prey in the forest. Still, they migrated from the deep forest for a reason, and that unknown reason may still be a threat to her community.

tcecrog

I'm thinking that the next chapter will be the most dangerous for Aaliyah survival. I wonder how she will avoid poisoning, heavy metal poisoning of Lead. Especially at a high class restaurant that most likely have pewter dishes (back in the day, these contained lead) with acidic soups, and also lead acetate, which is also know as sugar of lead. Hopefully, the bakers don't use arsenic green in the fondant of cakes.

Sebastian Osterbrink

Training and distance most likely. Low level soldiers likely are mostly cannon fodder. Training soldiers to have Skills, skills and Levels takes time.

Obsidianking

I actually am wondering why hasn't the king or any of part of the military sent reinforcements the fort the general is at yet its been at least a month or two of fighting and their lacking supplies and manpower shouldn't they be better taken care of ?

John Curtis

While I tend to think she is a shitty merchant and seller of her products, I have to ask where have her lesson's from mommy dearest gone? The daughter of the silver hand or whatever the trading company who learned from probably her father ( current head) or her Grandfather (previous head) as she grew up. If her mother had been teaching her then she should know better. Also during the middle ages which I tend to think this story time line is set bartering and what not is more common than today. Saying that though I do think she is foolish with the choices in how she sells things is going.

RanaSuilep

/sigh, a well written chapter with another disaster in regards to trading. No one makes trades like this. Not in the real world or even other characters in this story. I am specifically referring to her giving up her two future arrows (worth at least 20 GP, probably more like 30 GP) in exchange for 'reduced prices'. I will admit it is not as bad since she is finally learning what stuff it worth, but she is just learning about the retail price of the goods, not the wholesale price. Maybe she just likes to whore herself out financially to any strong man she sees? I would like to say its their skills but she has mental resistance, which makes this even worse. The MC needs to stop trading hard concrete benefits for make believe. It is like a child trying to make deals and have a conversation, when it is so obvious they are above their heads and are being played like a two bit wench. At least the wench knows her own worth, so it makes the MC worse than that, a victim. This kind of trading on good will is clearly not a cultural thing, but an MC thing, since no one else does it. Not once do the merchants say anything similar. If I was this merchant leader, I would be thinking one of two things. First that the MC is completely insane and needs a silver hand to guide her properly, otherwise she will be taken advantage of and it is better that we explain things to her so she stops getting financially raped. Second, we are going to squeeze her for all the money and goods we can get out of her, consequences be dammed. The first one makes sense if she is valuable enough, but the fact the merchants have not had a moment like that with her points to the second. I still don't understand how anyone can be this ignorant, at least with the leveling mechanics that involved trading based on hard numbers to level up. This feel good trading is just......it is stupidity at its finest. The fact that the MC still has to 'keep playing up her worth' shows how much she undervalues herself. Just like a victim and less knowledgeable than a two bit whore. It has gone from the point of cringe which it was before to almost unbearable with how naïve she is and financially raped in regards to what the merchants are doing to her. The fact that she never thought that the merchants are clearly paying a lot less for the ore than what she is, should be a clear example of how little she is thinking properly at the moment.

Michael Hart

Aaliyah being a noble would be an awesome plot twist later when she gets into some kind of trouble as she is apt to do. Also her mom has, apparently, sent a letter back to her family so maybe we'll get to explore that connection in future chapters. I kind of suspected this when her mom said something to Reel that made him nervous. It's the only thing I could think of that she could hold over him. It also might explain some of the headmans nervousness around her mother.

MadGod

I just realized something. Aaliyah already has the "invoke existential terror in others" part, she just needs to grow some tentacles from her Mana Skin and there you go: budget eldritch abomination.

Alteron

We have speculated that maybe Aaliyahs mother was part of the three big trading houses, well now we have learned that they are noble, so is Aaliyah noble? :-)

carebear90

I don't think, they'd necessarily make more money from her being an appraiser than her improving her craft and producing stuff for them in the future. They shouldn't know (yet) that she can break her exclusivity contract with Kervin by herself. At the moment I think, that protects both her and Kervin from such shennaigans. That and you can't really rely on her giving truthful appraisals if she is forced to do them against her own will.

Comiak

So I have a Theory on how magic materials work. First off, in order to use most of Earth elements from the periodic table and have fantasy metals, you have to do one of two things. simply make it so the super heavy unstable elements aren't unstable, likely due to magic, which brings in tons of problems most notable is rareity unless they are created differently or presence of magic makes it easier to be made. Or you add a new component to the elements (atoms). so instead of being made with neutrons, protons, and electrons you add a magic particle which would make a 3d periodic table. I like this explaination a lot more as you can have many magic materials that is similar to iron or copper or whatever and that seems to be the case here and also explains why mythril works the way it does as it seems to flow into other things. So Mythril would be mostly made of the magic particle as in it chemically bonds to pretty much everything. Since the actual distance between atoms can be fairly large it would look like it gets absorbed by other things. Which is also why you need to chemically purify it. The reason why some materials hold way more mana is that the atom is made of more of the mana particle. it is a property of that atom. It can also explain why materials have a mana structure. Much like how atoms can be arranged to form crystals the presence of the mana particle can influence the material structure. As for the kind of mana, like earth or water the particle can have many states and these states can change. Or it can be such that the mana type is determined by the atom and only free mana particles can be freely changed, this would explain why the fire metal always changed mana to fire. Or it could be an energy level thing, wherein fire has very high level of energy while Earth has very low. It would explain why fire mana heats things up as that energy is given to normal matter and why if you heat normal matter up you can also create fire mana. As for why wind mana and fire mana react to each other well that's a lot harder to explain, mostly where the extra energy is coming from, we simply don't have enough information on what happens to the wind mana like where it goes. But my best guess is magnetic like interaction where the wind and fire particle sticks to each other or the fire particle leaching energy from the wind particle. There are many ways to explain but these are just a hypothesis trying to explain how magical materials could actually exist if magic was real.

Milandaanza

Not really. Because she’s not loyal yet. She can still be persuaded to join one of the big three. Imo once she’s affirmed her trading company that’s when she’s screwed.

Milandaanza

She probably wants experience with the base metal before she considers alloys

Milandaanza

In this case I actually think the merchants did it smart. They’re not looking to make money here and it’s been stated. They’re nurturing a connection with MC and trying to offer a new trade option with the military. ....they’re bending over backwards to hook both the military supplier and the military contract itself.

Milandaanza

It really finally sank some teeth into materials and I adored it

Tera

I love it¡¡¡!!!😍😍

Mr Ove

Surprised she said yes to giving them her last 2 arrows like wouldn’t they prefer that the general get the best arrow so she happy and they keep their partner of war? If she is planning to stay in the village I hope she can find interesting items from the magic forest rather then going back and forth from the village to the town to get items. Also hopefully next chapter has some crafting :p or is it going to be a running back chapter. Overall loving the story and this chapter just sucks it a chapter every 5 days though they are always worth it! And I get life is a pain that why I hope you can get that 4000 goal lol

Joseph

Liked the chapter, though I got to say those are some really terrible merchants. The general demands extremely high quality custom made goods, for a unreasonably low price and in a unreasonably short period of time and they sell it to her at cost? Just terrible merchants. Also counting on good will from someone who has been cheating and taking advantage of them from day 1 is extremely foolish. Good will they don't particularly depend on as it is not like the general can get these from elsewhere or she would already have them, they on the other hand really don't need her and in all honesty would be better off selling to others and not dealing with her.

D

Hmm? Am i wrong or wasnt the arrow shaft of the generals special arrows made with the wood aliyah uses normaly for the forge fire. Also, i know time is short so trying to your hand on making a new alloy would be a fools errand, but id have thought she would at least consider the possibility when she checks on the metals. Kinda liked the chapter. Might have wanted there to be a bit more happening, but all in all, it was a nice read. :)

Alteron

So the trading companies are in a Shadowrun/Cyberpunk like corporate war, i think Aaliyahs trip home just got a lot more dangerous.

RaGNORAK

@kosnik4 could we canvas you for epub versions along with your posts if it is not too much extra work? Or at least a monthly compilation at the end of a month?

Ungrave

Thanks for the chapter!

Håkan Friberg

Thanks!

Vyktor

Same as the other, the pace is good and you make it interesting. Until now I didn't skip any part of the story, since you can do it right and make the reader want to read it. And same as ZaA, my o l'y problem is that you don't post 10 chapters a day 😆

ZaA

The pace is close to the pace of a slice of life story, which isn't bad for the current on-goings of the story. The only problem I'm having right now, is that there isn't 10 new chapters a day, but oh well (: Thanks for the chapter! Stay well

Obsidianking

Thank you for the chapter, I thought I flowd pretty well. I like how your making it important that Aaliyah is involved in every process of the smiting cycle, because I feel like her claim to fame is going to be her ability to make uniformed but creative magical weapons/items. By having specific requirements for the process its making her standout in a good was as a blacksmith. Good luck and I hope the writing comes easier. P.s. Aaliyah is gonna have to take a few of the metals and make her own unique alloy eventually as her trademark

Mike G.

Good stuff! It's a good thing the army needs arrows, or the Herd wouldn't let her leave and just keep her around to evaluate stuff...

RaGNORAK

Ingots cost more, if she has to resmelt it, she has to do more work on top of paying extra. Plus, you could argue that a damaged magical lattice cannot be fixed again without exposure to the magical source that created it over a million years and yada yada yada. Plus metals are created in stars, so it's impossible to fix mana damage really, IMPOSSIBLE! (till she magically gets a skill for it)

Knightfire

Terrific chapter. Really like the detail on the ores.

Chemnerd263

I loved the discussion on the hazards of poorly made ingots from other smiths. Buying their mistakes when you buy an already made product. I am looking forward to seeing when she crafts this arrow, and the general's response to it. I am worried because I still dont know exactly what the general wants, and neither does Aaliyah. I am excited because I want to see more!

DayWalker

Great chapter... Loved it

The other DB

Was she hitting on her, or trying to recruit her?

Comiak

So why can't MC just resmelt the bad ingots? Afterall smelting ore with 90% of the desired material and smelting an ingot with 90% purity is the same thing. Metal is metal no matter what form it takes.

Thundermike00

This was really great.i hope you go that into detail the rest of the trip with director grey.

Loyal Patreon follower

Great chapter, really enjoyable to read. In fact probably one of my favorites :D

Michael Hart

Thanks for the chapter! I wonder if Aaliyah will realize that the receptionist was hitting on her? If she doesn't I wonder how she will react when Reel teases her about it later.

Andrew

Thank you!

RaGNORAK

Great chapter, The pace is about the same as usual for you, but I like that. There is a kind of slice of life feel to the story, like we are a part of her life than for the plot to come rushing up and making things happen fast. So, I'd say stick with it. But, I imagine it would be a lot of additional effort to think up properties for the material/food and other stuff that'd maybe appear once in the story. So I'd suggest a 'butterbeer' approach, there are a lot of food descriptions in Harry Potter, but only one or two stand out long-term like 'butterbeer' so pick a favorite and reduce the time you spend on the remaining even if it means stupid names.

Alteron

Thanks for the chapter, I really enjoyed it.
