dat guy

Thanks for the Chapter! Wow. Adrien is having a lot of success in messing up this class of Lycée! He seems to be growing into a 'Big Bad' role even as Tori is growing into a worthy, bitter, spiteful, genre aware, lawful neutral to lawful evil antagonist. The boys seem to be most affected negatively: * ranks are declining and are more important than absolute marks * escaping supervision by parents. (Gideon seems to have learned from the experience) * failing on their own projects because Alessa is taking their time, effort, and money * Fabien's training and trusted place with his friend was messed up. * Gideon has lost a friend . (But he now has to be around Tori more Adrien must have gotten some capital in the course of all this: * Alessa now owes him a lot for services rendered, and he probably has blackmail material on her. * Helping the local success of craftsman now beholden to Adrien for finding them a chance to line their pockets (he may even help them now that they have been caught for bonus capital) This brings up my BIG question: What are the odds that _Adrien_ is another transmigrator in this game and not an NPC? 'The game' could be using him as an NPC to tweak the Alessa character (transmigrator or not) but are we sure this is still just a romance simulation and not a "disrupt the enemy on the home front" sim? The original wiki descriptions were all about Victoria's family's point of view. The true aggressors in that eastern battle front must have been happy that Kasen and Sebastian took time to revenge their sister and disrupt Soliel, rather than do clever tricks to them in battle or on their home-front. So: I hope Kasen digs into this sabotage of Tori's Lycée class and digs up something simple (for him to fix to protect his sister and the royal family) and part of something complex (for Tori to Mary Sue* though to victory** ) so we have lots of future chapters Adrien has to keep up with Tori to keep the story going. I bet he is having lots of behind the scenes successes in network building to match Tori's family connections. Then when a bigger bad shows up (around chapter 500? after Université.) he and Tori can join forces and muddle through those crises as equals like her and Piers :) [*] if Tori is not really a Mary Sue, then I'm sorry for the miss-characterization. Let me know. [**] Yes this Mary Sue character is Victoria. NOT MY FAULT.

thanks for the chapter.

I hope at some point soon, they explain some of the Imperial Preparations here. Seems weird to me that they (including Tori) have pre-approved a guest list for who can visit Tori if she’s injured & recovering at the palace.

Max Lopo

Yeah.... That is one of the possibilities. The other one is that there are rails to the story and she is a puppet. I would say it's possible that the Cow Man is the Big Bad, but that implies he either knows she is a trouble magnet, or she is complicit. So, either she's a soulless puppet, dumb or evil. But in this chapter we have seen someone who is REALLY dumb. At this point a crown sanctioned kidnapping of the Cowman and consequent date with a "information extraction specialist" is recommended.

Sebin Paul

Putting it mildly, but that was cathartic. Well done!

AlyxHaestrom

Aw shit, Ilyana's out for blood. Hart better watch her ass.

Different Nick

"Added bonus, the topic begs for the reveal that the order to stick Tori with the delta came from the Emperor directly." Tori knows from her vision, that she would be stuck with resettling refugees no matter what. Only this time, she was assigned the Delta so she didn't have to break families which led to thousands of people hating her. She might be grateful for that.

Noon Martini

He cost an orphan a leg. If they don’t get severe consequences, I hope Sonya turns assassin and ganks all of them. Being told your actions cost a kid a limb and then deflecting and pointing fingers means you’re a giant POS, btw

David Brims

Large projects run by intelligent people in RL still fail all the time. I've seen it happen. When they do it is seldom just one person's fault when analysed. Oversight can't avert every failure but can prevent some and can mitigate the consequences. If the failure of these projects can lead to catastrophic consequences then those that assign and approve the projects should not be allowed to dodge those consequences by using a scapegoat. I also like @Dave Quitit idea - if Tori uses this incident to launch an investigation into the whole process of Lycee Projects, she can dig into how she ended up in charge of setting up the settlement in the delta.

Daniel

They are not just children, they are the MOST capable children. Among the tippity top of the capable ranked children due to their schooling which is presumably partially dedicated to leadership. With the added benefit of their parents being among the 1%, they should be capable of the project. Presumably this project has been met with many successes to account for failures in the past.

Lou Gar

Isn't her mother dead? Or, "supposedly dead?'

Lou Gar

Yes, well said. I was reading something else, that this is the sort of test to show what you can do - in every aspect. Not just "hire someone" to do it for you," or do it all yourself, it was a test of you skills, and the ability to use your resources (including family, and 'experts') to do it right. I am, however, surprised at the lack of oversight - unless there are secret examiners, to check for what Hart is doing - having someone else do it for her, or the sort of fraud that brought it all tumbling down, like what Dimitri was involved in.

Dave Quitit

Damnit, this take is absolutely right too. I can totally see Tori arguing correctly on the point that the system should have checks to ensure these children aren't building hospitals out of tar and dry kindling. Added bonus, the topic begs for the reveal that the order to stick Tori with the delta came from the Emperor directly.

lenkite

Well..I am sticking to my [Original Hypothesis] that Alessa is some sort of [Natural Mind Witch] able to influence people enough so that they begin to behave irrationally. Folks who remain in her orbit get extremely devoted to her, but at the cost of rationality. Once they move out of her orbit, they have a chance to regain their mental faculties. But if they return back, she can dig her [Influence Threads] in again. The Big Q is whether she does this unconsciously or with deliberate, planned intent. Perhaps Soleil's neighbour is even aware about her mental capabilities. Maybe she inherited the talent from her dead mother - who migrated to Soleil ?

Nobody

While normally you'd be correct, he started his project with access to all of those things and promptly lost them by being a dumbass. Then instead of reaching out to the school for help he went ahead anyway, likely lying about the saftey measures in place as well as the competence of the workers. It isn't just a high-school, it's a high school made specifically for the kind of people who in the modern world graduate college by 18 or before. Even then it was explained earlier they themselves aren't expected to know everything, just enough to get in touch with people who do know, with the estimated proce being well within their family's ability to afford, which is why the regular students projects are so much smaller in scope, like starting a business and keep it running for 3 years or recording regional folk music. Guthory as the prime minister's son should have had at least realized having the building inspected was a good idea since he used trainees to build it. Not requiring buildings to be inspected was a weakness in the system that from all signs hadn't actually caused any problems for who knows how many centuries, even in modern times many places only require building inspections when a building is being sold and many of the ones that do only require it to be up to the standards of the time it was built (neat little life hack if you ever need to sell a house, it started as a loophole to allow the rich to dump their old mansions off on suckers when upkeep/modernization costs outweighed the property values).

Different Nick

This. Projects are assigned depending on what your family is doing, so they can finance it and help you with it. You know, learn by following the example of your parents. All this mismanagement, corruption, cutting corners and hurt children? A lot of people might think he learned it from daddy.

Keith

The fault lies with the workers who used the faulty material. The problem is they don't have any money so it's not useful to blame them. Guthry is running a school to train workers. His workers have had quality issues in the past. He's tried to improve the training but didn't have anyone to approve their work. They are his workers so that's why he has the blame. It's not the government's fault just because it happened in their country.

Morgan

I'm not sure if they can, as it was off school grounds, thus out of their jurisdiction

CentaureHeart

Agreed. The idea of the projects is actually pretty good to teach Nobles how to design/build/run any projects. But there should be wayyyy better control on this. However the reason they were assigned those subjects (except Tori's which was and still is ridiculous) because they fit with the student in question. Dmitry is very intelligent and the son of the prime minister, he should be able to handle all of this. And that's why he got punched

Oxylus

This is pretty well reasoned.. and admittedly stuff I personally should have considered. Still, Guthry deserved the punch. 😂 Just for being a self-serving git.

David Brims

I'm just gonna put this out there - Guthry is a self-serving git in this chapter (though maybe under Hart-MC influence), but that doesn't mean he's entirely wrong. There is a LOT of confirmation bias against Guthry going on here (dismissing his arguments because he's being a self-serving idiot). Think for a minute - Guthry is a teenager. They put him in charge of a major project with safety implications. In the modern world, he would have at a minimum: Work Health and Safety training, Project and Business Management training, and ideally Team Management training, Financial Management training, Design Management and several years working as an assistant or alongside someone. Tori has 10+ years of experience and training in some or most of that and even she was struggling (granted her project was 10 times harder than his). Guthry wouldn't even know what he didn't know. Don't just blame the individual when the system is seriously flawed. Guthry deserves some punishment here, but the real failure is by the government/empire and the Lycee for allowing this sort of thing to happen. I mean, how many students would have connections to proper auditors of some kind? Virtually none. So the Empire and/or the Lycee should be doing that for them, particularly when it comes to safety implications. I really hope that when Tori wakes up, that with her knowledge of modern safety systems, she DOESN'T lay into Guthry, and instead has a go at the EMPEROR/EMPRESS/GOVERNMENT and LYCEE for not auditing the projects better, particularly on the safety aspects. If she raises enough of a stink she might be able to make future projects much safer and better managed.

Summercat

Man, that was a satisfying read.

Streetwise

Muahahahahaahaaaa! I think they will finally learn that their actions... have CONSEQUENCES! Down with Dimitri, down with the Hart, down with the Golden Cow!

Dave Quitit

Nah, in the game one got expelled and the other got two weeks, and she's not the one who just crippled an orphan.

Kevin Caffrey

I like where this is going. Guthry is about to have a bad time. Will he be expelled? Seems possible at this point. I also don’t think we have seen the end of the “blame Tori” bit, as something tells me that we will see a parallel of the scene in the principal’s office as well, only this time with Piers to help. “Expel Ilyana? If you do, I will shut your school down”

I wonder if the engineers determined Tori's crystal work to reinforce the building prevented the school from collapsing further/quicker. From chapter 152: "...she was able to push the earth from beneath the brick floor and use it to create a pillar beside the exposed wood columns to reinforce them and hold up the walls and cieling." Very satisfying chapter. Two thumbs up.

Cymi

I just hope the school doesn't expel her for hitting him on principle and to 'match' the game >.<
