Diego Rossi

It will blow in Hart face, but it will require work on Tori part. Legally, and from a etiquette prospective is a very big faux pas, and all the nobility will know it. Common people will hear half truths and Hart excuses, but "important people" will be very interested in knowing if someone is trying this kind of tricks and they will not appreciate them.

Lou Gar

Holy Smoke, an orphanage. Fertile hunting grounds, or 'placement' for agents. Nasty...

Lou Gar

Treason - weak. Stupid - very strong. Expecting the consequences - not in character. Meta-gaming to gain romance points with her suitors --- very much so.

Empty Shelf

@Lou Has That...makes a bit more sense. It's still self-defeating on its face, but there's at least something she could gain from this. As for Adrien, I wouldn't think he'd want to risk trying the same scheme twice, but then he never has been very rational.

Lou Gar

Also, I would not doubt that Adrien will do something similar to shut her down - like he did before. He might not want to face her again, so he has her occupied at the opening, completely ignoring and underestimating her friends.

Lou Gar

Hmm, having the inspectors show up, and then close it down... or even just delay it, can resolve that problem. Then, that gives Tori an out - of dancing, of missing her opening, of dealing with her.

Lou Gar

Remember, Alessa is not out to 'beat' Tori socially, she is playing to get her to retaliate, so she can go crying to her 'love interest,' to score 'romance' points. Maybe it is all so she can get enough points to replant her hooks into Gideon... or some such.

Cymi

Sooo.. been thinking, and I'm guessing this is going to be a 'miss-understanding' by good old Tom; who used to work at printers in Tori's home town and made the beautiful invites. My guess is he 'accidentally' used the template for the upcoming wedding and.. it definitely had nothing to do with Hart. She had no idea and definitely didn't double check them before they went to print. But it's totally not her fault if people misunderstand and think that Tori is heartless and greedy and goes back on her word. Oh and I'm guessing the children at the orphanage have already been told and are so looking forward to her coming! Additionally, that little kid, Haban, is so sus! Conspiracy theory is that he is an orphan are imported from the country they're fighting for to be spy to bring down the evil Empire who killed his family. Cow man is an OG from the program and continuing it to spy on what Tori is getting up to business wise, as well as using them to infiltrate many places. In fact I wonder if a few more orphans have been found by Cowman and brought to Hart's orphanage and are going to be the really upset kids who Tori disappointed? This story makes me feel like Tinfoil could be in my future. So well written!

CentaureHeart

Oh I agree, but the problem is not the legality of it, it's how it's going to be perceived. The whole story Alessa has done bullshit and if Tori ever breathed in her direction in retaliation she would be labelled a bully. Because the game is still trying to generate more conflict and put Tori in the bully box. Here the justification is going to be "But Alessa was just trying to do something nice for the kids and to compliment Tori because she's such a good dancer, and she was trying to make amends with her in letting her get the spotlight. She would never have even thought about this how this put Tori in a shitty situation, she was just being nice. And that's what all the love interest are going to say..." But I totally agree that it's completely illegal and in a "normal" setting Alessa should be completely terminated for a move like that. I think we all know that it's not going to happen, the goal is to make Tori look bad. Hopefuly this completely blows up in her face but I doubt it

Empty Shelf

@Niraada "Technically", Adrien hasn't done anything wrong. All he did was print and deliver the invitations. He didn't write them and his name isn't on it. The rest seems spot on. Much like the stolen jacket designs, it should be an open and shut case, and I doubt Tori is inclined to be so charitable this time.

Empty Shelf

This might make sense...if they were the same social rank. In that case trying to pull a fast one might actually succeed. As it stands, what Alessa has done isn't just a crime, it's arguably a very serious one. Tori has the leverage, and the rank, to force a public retraction out of Alessa without much trouble.

Niraada

Misappropriating the name of a noble and/or member of Soleil's Imperial Court would and should be a criminal offense (in addition to cause for civil liability), which the invitation is evidence of, and it's the kind of thing that you would expect could cost a certain unscrupulous someone their peerage. Rosiek's involvement in it should be even more damaging for him (being a commoner), and made worse because of his previous defamation of Tori and theft of her designs. Allowing someone to harass and attack a sitting Countess and Marquis House repeatedly without severe and permanent consequences is the kind of thing that encourages your nobles to take justice into their own hands, and they've got loads of knights.

It feels like a lot of the comments are forgetting that Hart has a history of doing things that ignore convention, reason, and logic. In the rescue arc she seemed to think that she and Tori had somehow become friends who would help each other out and I’m sure in this case that’s how she’ll see it. On another note, I think it’s really great to see bits of non-mc romance like Claire attending with Sophia because it makes the world way more engaging and adds to the feeling of continuity.

lenkite

Launch a [Lawsuit] against Alessa against tarnishing her name. Accepting this dance means she can be pulled into all sorts of future crimes/scandals thanks to the implicit association with the orphanage. She should put her foot down here. Will be very disappointed if she just goes along with it. Besides just about everyone in their peer group knows the state of affairs between Tori and Alessa. No one is going to believe that Alessa got Tori to dance for here orphanage.

Nobody

A more accurate comparison would probably be the work houses for children from the UK, unless Heart made the children orphans herself.

CentaureHeart

The main problem here and Rosiek knows it (not Alessa because she's dumb like a bag of bricks) is the perception of it. Yes Tori could just refuse, but then it means she doesn't care about orphans. Or Tori can go to Alessa directly and ask her what is her problem for doing stuff like that. But Tori will never be able to prevent all the rumors. Even in this chapter for example Claire doesn't know exactly what happened with the coats 2 years ago ! Everyone close to Tori and around her will know the truth, but every person who has only heard of her in passing will have heard both opinion equally. Also there is definitely going to be a chapter where Tori "bullies" Alessa when she asks for an explanation. I'm looking forward to seeing how Tori mitigates this.

Mr. Bigglesworth

I think you're confused here. Treason doesn't need justification, this isn't a democracy, and Adrien and Co. are not citizens with any rights. They are foreigners. Kasen hasn't put them in the Gulag already because they want to expose the entire network in one shot, not because it can't be done.

Empty Shelf

It'd be basically impossible to justify charges of Treason. There isn't any direct evidence that Adrien and his friends are enemy agents, and while what Hart is attempting could theoretically embarrass Tori, it is no way Treason.

Mr. Bigglesworth

She isn't going to make excuses for something that has been planned for months. The guest list alone is people Tori won't be snubbing, much less for some charity event delusion that Hart has. The fact that Hart thinks she can set a Countess's schedule as a mere Baroness shows how far off the deep end she's gone.

SiriB

Yes. Mean Countess, breaking promises and snubbing the Church and orphans. But Tori can spin it better: "I'm here supporting a worthy cause despite scheduling conflict." Duel opening can manage without Tori for a while.

Mr. Bigglesworth

Treason refers to the betrayal of one's own country by attempting to overthrow the government through waging war against the state or materially aiding its enemies. If aiding Cow and his associates in an attempt to embarrass or lie about Tori, associates who are pretty clearly under investigation by Kasen for links to the Federation, isn't treason, I don't know what is. This act is merely another step in the stupidity level from Hart and, quite frankly, one that goes a bit too deep off the end of illogic established so far.

Tarmandan

Don't forget Hart has a history of doing pretty dumb things. If you consider it that way it actually is pretty believable

Oxylus

I don't think treason means what you think it means. 😂

Sdff

If Tori dances without checking for quality of life standards, then she will be potentially endorsing human rights abuses. Just read Charles Dickens' books or about "Indian Boarding Schools" in America and Canada, and you'd see how ill advised any dance and not enthusiastic detraction notice could be.

Mr. Bigglesworth

It's treason, plain and simple. Hart is attacking not only a social superior but a higher rank noble. If she says anything like that, it is punishable, or it was in the middle ages.

Sdff

Also a blessing dance could be seen as a letter of endorsement by Tori. While teenage dramas often get away with this. If Tori let this stand in the real world without ensuring that The Orphanage/School was any good it could ruin her reputation appeasing Hearts lies. Like Why would you dance for food poisoning or "indian boarding schools." Look up the horrors of American/Canadian/Australian indian boarding schools and how until the late 1900's bad things were happening in Canada, (perhaps the last to maintain these often dehuminizing schools.)

nugitoBambino

she can't. as far as i can tell this is a ploy against tori's reputation. she's likely sent out a bunch of invites saying tori will dance. when she doesn't, she'll say something like "tori had more important things to do than dance for children :( isn't that so sadddd!!!" crazy bitch

Empty Shelf

I'm just confused. Unless they have some kind of leverage Tori doesn't have any reason to play along, and if she's willing to go to the mat over this they will lose more than just face. It's too obvious to be anything but a ploy, but I can't figure out what the angle is.

Brad Jackson

Yeah, Tori and Hart's poor relationship is well known throughout high society. Pretty much anyone who does even a superficial check should come away with the question of why the hell would Hart ask Tori for the dance and why would Tori accept it. Even if this is some hair-brained scheme to damage Tori's image, this seems exceptionally poorly thought out.

Drew Kerstens

I keep thinking Ilyanna is going to snap and use her new dagger skills on Hart to remove her from being an issue… and I don’t think that’s a bad thing

Rue

Hart's about to make a giant fool of herself

PlasmaticPi

Its about the appearance to the public probably, as turning down an orphanage because of your own business opening would seem greedy or something. But honestly even that is a pretty bad excuse, to the point where I think the author needs to rethink this whole thing.

Lictor Magnus

I agree it’s real easy for Tori to just say she never agreed to do it if someone asks her when she doesn’t show up.

Empty Shelf

Umm...why? Like, I get that this is a ploy by Alessa and Adrien, but what do they have to gain by "volunteering" Tori for this? I mean, not only is this bad form, it could get Alessa in legit trouble given that she's essentially committing fraud by using the name of someone of a higher station to promote her project.

Brett Hayes

I think if I were in Tori's shoes... I'd have Hart murdered in her sleep.

S. Nutter

Hart is such a spiteful cow. Ugh.

Rachel

Hart is such a skank. We need petty Tori to make an appearance STAT

Mr. Bigglesworth

I'm super confused here. On what grounds is a lower-level noble making a plan for one of higher standing? What's next? Telling the Empress she needs to attend her execution? Suspension of disbelief didn't work here.
