Absolute Batman
🕑 Added 2024-09-02 18:00:42 +0000 UTCUPDATE! So my son came into my studio, saw this drawing of Batman still up on my computer screen, and (the little critic that he is) said he looked too chunky. Judging from the comments on this, he wasn't alone!
So per request, even after explaining "too chunky" is what I was going for), I toned him up a bit (like, literally 10 minutes of work--I have far more important things to be doing). I also made him more brooding since I know that would have been his next critique.
He's at school right now so I can't ask him if it's any better. So what do you guys think? Chunky Absolute Batman or Not-So-Chunky Absolute Batman? Should I keep the smile? I've long leaned that my opinion of my art is generally not the more popular one. Haha. Suppose the winning version will help me decide which one I'll eventually--possibly?--post to the socials.

Happy Monday, my friends! And happy Labor Day to those here in the states. I hope a few of you are enjoying a nice little extended weekend.
Since no one works harder than Batman (at least in Gotham), seemed like a good day to post this scratchy little sketch I scribbled of him yesterday evening. His new Absolute design feels like such a fresh, slightly goofy and cool take on the character. I love it.
Didn't use a whole lot of reference, so hopefully I captured him okay. I like that he can walk on his cape like an actual bat.

Yes, there’s a lot of negativity toward the new universe, such as it’s ripping off Marvel and doing another 1990’s EXTREME take on the characters like the New 52 did , but worse. Not having a butler and not having money as a plot point is, many say, redundant as Alfred has been dead for years and Bruce had no money for some time, only getting it again. Comments on the symbol is it’s the worst and resembles “a child’s attempt at drawing a caterpillar”. I wish you could do a Kara and Babs book. Whether your current version or another, it would be amazing.

I didn't know about any bad press! But I'm all about ridiculous so explains why I like it! I'm also all about new, non-continuity takes on characters. Only way I'd ever do a BG/SG book tbh.

The original is just fine. A.B. is ridiculous and there has been so much bad press over DC’s Ultimate - I mean Absolute line. If anything, the legs should be thicker and his head smaller. I do like the smile, but again, the first was fine … or should that be absolute? :)

I'm not going to Bat shame his waistline. It's the dragon fly wing setup that throws me off. My brain throws on the brakes trying to understand it.
