Speaking of, being about a week into SuperBatober now, I thought it'd be nice to show you a bit of the stuff I've been using to make these.
This is paper I've been using. The 8x6 has proven a great size and the texture is very subtle. Not too toothy, but not ultra smooth either, so it takes the watercolor and inks really well (ink tends to smear a bit on actual watercolor paper).
My tools! From counter-clockwise down:
- A Koh-I-Noor mechanical pencil with .05 Pentel blue lead. I've had this thing for over 25 years. It's probably my most reliable appendage. Sadly, I'm not using it very often since I've been drawing these inktobers digitally and printing them out. Just slight additions or edits.
- A Pentel pocket brush - Used for large shaded-in areas (like the giant boulder in today's drawing).
- A Sakura Graphic 1 marker - Used for shading in smaller areas.
- A Sakura 02 Micron pen - My primary inking thing that I use.
- An eraser - I don't know what this is doing in the picture. I haven't used it at all for these.
- A bunch of old watercolor brushes, 6 and 8 sizes. The brands don't really matter because I have no idea what a good branded brush is. I just make whatever I find around my desk work. These are all super old too. I really need to go out and buy some new ones but I'm too busy working to do so.
See how crimped and frayed it is! Terrible. I shouldn't even be using this.
I use super inexpensive Prang watercolors! The same ones I used when I was in elementary school. They're bright, they work just fine, and this 16 set provides all the colors I need. And because they only cost like $5 with a 50% off Michaels coupon, I'm not hesitant to get all messy and wasteful with them.
And lastly, here's my water cup! It's still very clean because I only started using this recently after finding it in the cupboard. It reminds me of one of my favorite ever author visits in Yuma, Arizona. Great organizers, great community, great teachers, and great craft beer. I hope to make it back someday.
I see some folks recording a video while they work. I'd like to try this! But have no idea how to go about it. Maybe have my wife hold a phone over my head while I paint? But that's up to her. Maybe if y'all send her a bunch of chocolate I'll be able to convince her to do some cinematography for me.

Hmm. I can look into that. The problem is I'm so bind, my head is usually hovering an inch above my paper when I'm inking. Afraid someone not in control of the camera might not cut it.

I use a great ring light tripod I got on Amazon to record my drawings. The tripod is extendable so I can use it on the table or floor.
