Rachel's Love Potion 3: Oops, Summoned a Demon

I'll recap below, but if you're a fan, there's actually a little book club meeting in my discord server to refresh, ruminate, and at times eye roll in preparation for today's release of the third installment. RECAP
In the original short story, a suburban warlock with a crush on his smoking hot neighbor tries to ensnare her with a love potion, except he's short on a key ingredient and only makes her fall incredibly deeply in Like with him. Nothing seems to dampen her enthusiasm for his friendship, and eventually he realizes that nothing dampens her enthusiasm for his friendship. Sexytimes ensue.
There was a sequel. Even MORE sexytimes ensue as Rachel blunders her attempt to get her two best friends, Joanna and Knox, to get along together, and maybe even set them up as a couple. It culminates in an increasingly jealous and ostracized Rachel doing Something that leaves her MIA, replaced by some kind of something that looks like her, but with some horns.
This is part 3. It picks up where we left off. Read it. Enjoy it. Have fun.

So much to love in this first chapter. There's obviously the big Special Guest Star(s) reveal for the end, which is a million miles away from where I was expecting this story to go. (The Wizard, or someone from the original Character Creation; those were my main guesses.) The inclusion of Detective Portland and his newest partner is perfect for this story, though. It's an admission that RLP3 is going to get a lot more insane than its predecessors, and that this series is going for a full-on screwball mystery vibe. Which is a nice segue into talking about the maybe-succubus replacement for Rachel. (RachHell?) She's -- and I'm almost sorry for saying this -- my favorite character in the RLP franchise. She's the energy this story needed (someone vaguely helpful who is willing to call Knox on his frequent incompetence and inflated ego), and her teasingly argumentative nature is my absolute favorite Ice Bear writing. *I love it when he writes arguing characters.* I love it! The most! So a story that's 75% Knox getting in quippy insults while a smoking-hot extraplanar (it IS fun to say) escapee busts his balls? *Made* for me. This first chapter was a blast. I couldn't even begin to speculate what's up with Rachel, but the introduction of RachHell was a terrific distraction, as was the pop-in by Knox's old roommate. Fantastic start!
