Originally, Endor was supposed to be the planet of the Wookies, a primitive Bigfoot-like race. But Lucas liked the Wookies so much, he had to put one in his first movie. Since he made Chewbacca technology proficient, the Wookies could no longer be primitive. When he got to the third movie, he cut the Wookie's height in half and rearranged the syllables of the name. Wook-Ee became Ee-Wook. Or Ewok.

The first Star Wars I saw in theaters as a kid was this one, didn't even know the "I am your father" part, so this was a TON of information for 7-year-old me to process.
