He looks so different, but that does make sense why they asked him to stay behind for 3 months while they finish recording

Yes! This is when Andy (Chris Pratt) was working in London on Guardians of the Galaxy, and had lost weight and got buff. So the show added that line about "I stopped drinking beer and lost 50 pounds" and devised this way to film scenes in the UK so he could be in this first episode, with a plot "reason" to keep him absent for 3 months.

This episode was original telecast as one hourlong (minus commercials) episode. Clearly that's the way you were able to see it! The only version streaming in the US is a version cut up into two regular-length episodes. So this was another real sync challenge: scenes longer or shorter, in different orders, another opening credits, etc. Not your fault, of course!
