You guys are probably the first reactors I've seen that have any sympathy for Jeff Daniels' character. I don't think most people understand the absolute clusterfuck it would be to send the crew back and risk losing all the astronauts for a small chance to save one astronaut. We're emotionally invested, but he's supposed to make the rational decision, not the emotional one.

oh wow I would have never thought of it being the Jordanian desert and also its so cool they actually used pathfinder and the mars rover in this movie, it makes total sense that they would still be there

Mars was the Jordanian desert. Pathfinder is real too. It was sent in the 90's, just a lander it would be well buried in sand by the near future year the film takes place.
