well actually, Parker is kinda right: Saint Nicholas sort of IS Santa. One of the myths around the bishop Nikolaus of Myr (aka St Nicholas) was that he secretly put food and coins into socks and boots that were hung up to dry of poor children during the night. Hence the American tradition of hanging socks during christmas and the German tradition of cleaning boots and putting them outside for St Nicholas day. Now, Santa is the culmination of many different tradition, but he is one of them. But the others are also kinda right. Among the long list of who St Nick is the patron of is repentant thieves - which they all are in a way...
