I love Season 3, but this episode definitely is a low point in a great season. Not terrible, but never one I'm excited about watching again.

Their grandma made him leave and kept him away all those years they grew up. After they were over 18 is a different story though, I assume since they all still lived at home with their grandma that’s why he continued to stay away and only came back into their lives like a year after their grandma died. But I believe in the first episode phoebe mentions that she went to New York (pre season one) right after their grandma dies for 6 months to look for him. And after they met him in season one she kept in touch which is why she has more of a closer relationship to him than her sisters
