To answer your questions re: judges: There are two different types of trials. Bench trials are decided by the judge alone, while jury trials are overseen by a judge but decided by the jury. Once the jury calls a verdict, it can't be reversed. Defendants (people being accused of a crime) can ask for either, and typically choose based on what they think will give them a better shot at a not guilty verdict. Mistrials can be called for many different reasons. Usually its because a jury can't come to a unanimous decision, which is required in both federal and state criminal trials since 2020. But it can also be due to the death of a participant, procedural errors, and yes, strong bias from the judge. Some states have mandatory minimum sentencing laws for certain crimes, others do not. There are also general guidelines for sentencing which are established by precedent (similar cases that have happened in the past). The prosecutor's job is to argue for damages on their client's behalf, which is taken into consideration when judges determine a sentence but doesn't have to be followed to a t. Ethical guidelines require judges to recuse themselves from any case with a conflict of interest, but its not out of the question that it could still happen. But that is a big reason why precedent is so heavily relied on for verdicts. So if a judge has deferred from years of precedent when coming to a verdict or deciding a sentence, its a good indicator of a conflict of interest. So yes, in some cases it is technically completely up to a judge to decide someone's fate, and yes that means many people have suffered at the hands of unfair judgement just because the judge was having a bad day or racism or backdoor deals. But on the bright side I could be a judge one day if I get bored and then there really will be a judge watching supermega in the breakroom
