I got the finger in the belly button thing done to me recently because I had abdominal pains. It's just to check where the pain is at and get a feel for any abnormalities before they examine further. He sticks the finger in and wiggles it into different positions and pushes down. I had to get ultra sounds and a CAT scan after that. Turns out nothing was wrong at all, I was just hallucinating body sensations because I was having a PTSD episode. But yeah, the finger in the belly button is legitimately a thing, hernias can be entirely detected and discovered through it.
