The only policy more archaic than the military don't ask don't tell policy, are the current blood donation requirements set in place by the AABB and the Red Cross. Canada recently reworked the guidelines to remove discrimination towards homosexual men and the LGBTQ community, and trends in the past have been that the US will follow in 5-7 years. But the US is reluctant to change the requirements after there was a jump in hep C cases among boomers began showing up in the late 90s forward. It was only in 1992 that we (health sciences) began testing donor blood for Hep C and instituted the screening question "have you received donor blood prior to 1992". Homosexual men and LGBTQ community isn't even the most at risk for HiV and hepatitis anymore.
