Awesome! You had me rolling on the floor at the end. Great work all around as always. Thank you for what you do. You are my 6 year old son’s hero. Your hard work means a lot to that little boy!

This was gold from beginning to end. Also did reggie have to endure the 2 hour car ride back and if so is he ok?

I suspect I'm not the only person on your Patreon who might be able to help out translating old German papers... Google is a bit of a potluck in that regard. A lot of really interesting older research seems to be available mostly in German and French, though I've come across a few other languages as well. A surprisingly large number of these papers seem to never really have made their way into English literature beyond the odd reference.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just receptors getting overwhelmed. A lot of sulfur compounds do that. Of course, individual tolerance does play a part, too.

Reggie is very brave sticking with you even though he knows you are stink proof and he will be the only true tester of the outcome of your experiment. Another mission accomplished successfully. Well done!

One thing I'm wondering: does something like activated carbon help? Do fume hoods filter to some degree, or do they just blow everything outside?
Walker Dickson
I can't wait for the cherry soda video, the grape soda one was how I found your channel and my favourite one!
Nile Red
I think you are the first to make the connection. Let's just say that my synthesis probably didn't go as well as I thought.
Nile Red
I explained later in the video that I wasn't actually super far away and you can see there is a road back there. For the final version though, I hid the car, with some editing magic, ha. Just so it wouldn't be distracting.
Walker Dickson
Lol I'm sure it does 😂
Nile Red
It takes forever!
Nile Red
Thank you Tom

You are a very brave chemist :-) I'm a little bit puzzled by the white car passing in the background at 34:28; *lols* ;-) the "island" seems close to civilization
Mike Hanley
You should have rented an RV and driven out into the desert in just your underwear and a gas mask...

Entertaining as always. :)
Michael Brown
Yay!! A new video!

One thing I noticed: You get told, that it smells bad outside of your lab, you run outside, conclude that it's not that bad and more likely sewage or garbage. Then you produce it on the island and comment, that it sort of smells like sewage or garbage...
Matthew Wilson
That is pretty funny. It sucks doing a lot of chemistry without a sense of smell, but it does have its comical side if the chemicals aren’t necessarily dangerous. I’ve certainly angered my wife and neighbors a couple times in the past.

Speaking of comic: A couple of caver friends of mine once explored a cave while they were attending a convention. They rapelled to the bottom of a pit one at a time - right into the rotting corpse of a dead cow, maggots and all. There was nothing to do about it then, so they continued their expedition. By the time they finished, they realized they were going to be late for the big convention dinner. So they didn't shower and change their clothes. They had an entire table to themselves.

How long does it take you to make and edit your videos? It must take a while to edit, record voiceovers, etc. Just curious.

This is a banger

That the smell increases with distance is, to say the least, counterintuitive. I have to wonder: Does it react with oxygen or water (i.e. moisture)? Or: Do our body's thioacetone receptors shut down when the concentration is too high? Or: Are there genetic differences in peoples' reaction to it, which could explain why you don't react the way your friend and an entire German town do.

Hey Nile ☺️
ARPLATINUM
To be clear, I didn't look for any other ones until seeing yours lol. Curious to see his reaction (no pun intended lol) and just glad to see you back, sir! Been too long! Appreciate the vids!
Nile Red
I only saw his video after I had filmed for mine, but, I will reference him in the final version of the video! I think he deserves credit for technically doing it first.
ARPLATINUM
Now I have to watch this one after this lol see how they compare. https://youtu.be/E_wboFJZBTU

each chemical synthesis makes it less likely you'll be able to smell the next one
Matthew Wilson
Great video Nigel! I have had anosmia for 34 years and so smelly chemistry is comical to me especially.

Great video! I wonder if it would be worse if you made it with Selenium instead of sulfur. In fact my first thought was that you were making selenophenol which I only know about due to this very funny article https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/things-i-won-t-work-selenophenol
Hunter Coffin deKieffer
Fantastic video! I laughed so hard when the establishing shot on the island popped up. Given the results, I think it was a wise choice of location.
Kris Hewitt
Nigel!
Ronnie
What a nice xmas gift! Happy Holidays, dude! ♡
Mel Salde
Nigel said "Okay bet? Can't be THAT bad"
Aaron Aitken

Excited to see a new video!
