“About damn time,” he snarls as he kisses you.
“Since when do you wake up early?” You stretch and yawn as he nuzzles to your neck and shoulder.
He grunts a reply at you as he lifts his head to flop it back onto the pillow. You stretch out your arm to stroke the onyx-like horns on the side of his head. “Should I go make breakfast, or will you surprise me again this morning?”
“I’m out of surprises,” he growls as he snuggles back to the pillow. “You could ask for a miracle but even that would take a miracle.” He peeks an eye open at you and smirks.
You smile and roll your eyes. You sit up and sling your legs over the side of the bed. As you’re about to slip out he grabs you around the waist and pulls you back in. You squeal and giggle, kicking your legs and he pushes you into the pillows and sheets. His scaly tail coils around your waist and he lays his weight on you.
“I thought you were making breakfast,” he yawns.
“Funny, cute,” you kiss his cheek. Relaxing back into bed as he holds you, hostage. “I could be getting the coffee ready.”
“Well, why aren’t you?” He smirks.
You make a face at him and kiss him again. You manage to shove him off you and escape the bed in time before he tries to snatch you back again. “I’ll have the coffee ready in five. Be up by then or it’ll get cold.”
You slip on your robe and a pair of slippers before heading to the kitchen. You start the coffeepot and then move on to getting things ready for breakfast. Sure enough, as soon as you have his cup poured he slinks from the bedroom. He yawns, showing off the sharp teeth in his mouth.
“It rises from its cave,” you tease as you hold the cup out.
“Oh haha,” he kisses you and rubs his eyes before taking a drink. He sits down at the table, laying his head on the top as he watches you at the stove.
“How do you do it?” He asks.
You glance over your shoulder at him. “Do what?”
“Cook in your nice robe and never get anything on it?” He grumps. “I try to do that and I always wind up having to buy all new clothes.”
You smirk, “comes from centuries of practice.”
“What do you know about centuries? Silly mortal.” He rolls his eyes in pay and sits up.
“I guess some people just are born with an inherent predisposition for chaos while others are born with more elegance and grace.” You tease him,
“Show me grace and I’ll show you…whatever it was you just said about me that I’m sure was an insult.”
You make a pouty face rub your fist under your eye. “Awww, did I confuse the great dragon warlord with too many big words?” You mock with a baby voice.
He points a finger at you. “Give me an hour and I’ll show you big words, young lady.”
You laugh, turning back to flipping eggs. “I have to work in the garden today. You could join me.”
His lip curls. “Work?”
“Yeah,” you hand him his plate. “I’ve got to get some new flowers planted and trim up some of the hedges.”
“Don’t we have people for that kind of stuff?” He sits up in his chair and picks up a fork.
“What people?” You laugh as you sit down beside him with your own food. “You keep talking about people like you’re still fighting wars.”
He shrugs, giving you a wink as he eats. After breakfast, he gets into the shower while you change to go to the garden. You’re thankful it’s cool that morning. You get out your tools and take the new plants you got. You’ve been planning this for a while to fluff up the garden. Since winter it’s been looking a little bleak. It’s more cobblestone walkways than plants anymore.
You’ve chosen a few select spots perfect for what you’ve got in mind. As you’re digging and fertilizing you see something slither beyond the hedges. For a moment, you think snake and you’re ready to bolt. Then you recognize the scales of your husband’s tail.
You scoff and slap at it with your scoop. “Very funny!”
“I thought so,” he peeks over the edge of the hedges. His long muzzle shiny and you can smell the clean scent of soap on him.
“Going full dragon today are we?” You ask as you turn your attention back to your garden.
“I figured I needed the airing out.” He pokes his head between the hedges to kiss the top of your head while you work. “I was hoping to see you in a ridiculously large floppy hat.”
“Nope,” you smirk. “No floppy hat today.”
“Not even a baseball cap that says something stupid beyond belief?”
You laugh and look up at him. “And what would that be?”
“Git ‘er done? How’s the bacon? Some backward ass thinking on patriotism? I don’t know. Every baseball cap I’ve seen has been something to that effect. That or some soda.”
You shake your head as you giggle. “You don’t get out much do you?”
“You know I don’t,” he moves out of the hedges and walks around. He snorts at the plants in the carrier. “Why are you doing this again?”
“To attract a mate now hand me that bag of compost.”
“Compost?” He lifts the bag and pinches the tip with his sharp nails. “Smells awful.”
“It is awful, just hand it here.” You reach for it, shoving your hand inside and laying it around the base of the plants you’ve already planted.
“Judging from all the shit you’ve got lying around I’d say you’re trying to make another husband.”
“Did you really just burn yourself?” You laugh.
He smirks at you, raising his brows. “I can say I enjoyed it too.” He nestles down, going quiet as he watches you work. He seems curious and he sticks close to you. His tail often lays in your lap when you’re working on the ground.
After you’re done planting you decide to take a break. “I’m going to get a shower,” you tell him.
“Then what?” He tilts his head towards you. His eyes are wide and hopeful.
You smirk at him. “Then I’m running away to join the circus,” you tease. “Make us lunch and we can sit out here and enjoy the weather.”
After your shower, you’re drying out your hair as you walk into the kitchen. He’s walking from the front with a stack of pizza boxes in his arms.
“Oh,” he looks around for a moment then back at you. “Done already?”
You walk over to him and open one of the boxes, taking a slice for yourself. “You too? Nice to see you’ve gotten the hang of cooking love.” You jerk your head towards the garden and walk outside.
You dust off the patio furniture as he sets the boxes down. “Were you planning on making it look like you had made five pizzas from scratch in less than an hour?”
He shrugs. “I thought it sounded like a winning idea.”
You shake your head as you sit down, finishing the piece you already took. As you’re eating he shifts back to his full dragon form. He eats a pizza with one bite then waits until you’ve had another slice.
“The garden looks good.” He says.
“Does it?” You turn to look at your handy work. To you, it looks sloppy. Sure, you’re no happy homemaker but you had expected a bit better of yourself.
“Yeah,” he smiles. “Once it all grows in and everything it’s going to look amazing.”
You nod and turn to him, a soft grin on your face. “Thanks.”
He stretches his neck out and kisses you on the forehead. “I can trim the hedges,” he replies. “I can just singe them all down.”
“No!” You scold. “Do not breathe fire on highly flammable things! That is common sense number one!”
He smirks. “It would be quick work.”
You widen your eyes at him. “Yeah, so would a call to 911 when our house catches fire.”
He just grins and kisses your cheek again. After he’s done eating he lays his head in your lap and sighs. You pet his neck and scratch behind his horns and his ears. His tail wags slowly as you rub his snout. You wipe pizza grease from his lips and sigh.
“Good thing you aren’t in your robe now. You’d need a new one after all the pizza you ate.”
“Hey,” he growls and nuzzles to your stomach. “Enough pestering me,” he smiles and closes his eyes. “This is nice pampering time.”
You smile and kiss the top of his head. “Fair enough.” You look up, wondering for a moment how it could all be so calm and peaceful. You take a deep breath of the cool air and close your eyes.
You feel a kiss on your lips and you open then. He smiles at you and you run your hand down his scales.
“You stopped petting,” he teases. He nuzzles to your cheek and neck then rests his head on your shoulder.
You rub your hands down his neck and lean your cheek to his. “Oh, my bad. I’m just so horrible to you.”
“The worst,” he sighs. “But I love you anyways.”
You smile. “That’s so nice of you.” You kiss his cheek and ear. “I love you too, by the way.” You whisper to him.
He turns and looks at you, his eyes glowing softly. “Good. Because I don’t intend to ever stop.”
You smirk at him and giggle. “Like I would let you.” You kiss the tip of his nose.
He lays his head back on your lap and yawns. “Is it nap time yet.”
“You’re a grown warlord, you don’t need naps.”
He whines and fidgets against you, poking his horn into your belly. “That’s not fair. I know toddlers way meaner than I am and they get to nap all the time. So why don’t I get to nap when I’m only kind of mean?”
“Meanness doesn’t equate who gets to nap and who doesn’t,” you pinch his cheek.
He scoffs. “Oh sure,” he growls.
“But, if you want to, we can go snuggle on the sofa and watch bad TV.” You look down at him. His eyes peek up curiously at you. “And if a nap should happen then who am I to stop it?”
He lifts his head. “Bad TV you say?”
You laugh and stand up. “Bad TV, bad movies, does it matter?”
“Oh of course,” he follows after you. “They are two completely different things after all.”
“How so?” You scoff.
“Bad TV is background noise. Bad movies are an investment.” He says.
You sit down on the couch and turn the television on. He nestles down beside you, stretching out so he lays in your lap. You toss a blanket over him and lean back.
“Today was a good day,” he yawns. He nuzzles to your belly.
You can’t help but catch it. You yawn as well and snuggle on the sofa. “You think so?”
“Yeah,” he murmurs. “It was a really great day.”
You reach down, petting his horns and scratching behind his ears. He begins to snore, dozing soundly on your stomach. You smile to yourself and catch yourself yawning again.
“Yeah,” you murmur as your eyes flutter and you begin to drift with him. “It was a really good day.”
