For the last few weeks, you’ve been coming to the park and sitting on the same bench, watching people and sometimes throwing bread for the birds. You’ve been doing this because it was what your grandfather always did. He would come, sit, watch, throw. This was his seat for the last few months of his life and you want to see that part for just a little bit before your life moves you along.
Although, you aren’t alone on the bench. Not long after you started sitting there someone else started to come and sit beside you. They’re tall and shadowed, their body draped all in black and face hidden by a large hood. At first, you didn’t talk to them, it seemed a bit too macabre a situation. It was like an episode of the Twilight Zone and you could hear Rod Serling whispering a monologue in your ear.
After a few days of sitting next to this strange figure, you can’t help yourself. “Would you like some gum?” You feel utterly stupid in saying it, but it’s the only conversation starter you can think of.
“No thank you,” her voice is smooth and serene, “I don’t particularly like gum.”
“Oh,” you eyes dart around the lines of her hood. “Uhm…I have some hard candy?”
“You don’t look over sixty,” she retorts, a smile in her voice.
You laugh and smile up at her, “I keep them as lozenges or to uhm…offer to strangers.” You hold out a handful of assorted candies.
She turns slightly, but you can’t see anything inside the hood. She reaches out, taking one of the candies, her hand looks strange but you can’t put your finger on it. She looks at the candy in her hands then pulls back, never opening it.
“Why do you come here?” She asks.
“It’s…silly I guess,” you reply. “But my grandfather died recently and I come here to…” you hesitate as you look around, seeing that the park was slowly changing, the leaves once bright and green were dulling and changing colors. “I wanted to see through his eyes for a while,” you continue, “so I don’t have to say goodbye so soon.”
“You two were close?” She asks.
“Not…really,” you murmur. “Not anymore at least. I used to spend every summer with him and my grandmother.”
Her head tilts forward slightly. “Then what happened?”
“My parents divorced, it was messy,” you glance over at her. “Normal things really,” you shrug it off. “I’m sorry I don’t mean to keep talking about myself.”
“It’s quite alright,” she murmurs, “I much prefer to listen to others’ stories than talk about myself. I find it comforting.”
“You would’ve liked my grandfather then. He was nothing but stories. He could talk all day and never run out of things to say.”
“Do you miss that?”
“As a kid, I did, as an adult…I guess you forget how to listen at some point,” you fidget with her hands, picking at the flaking nail polish.
“People are in such a hurry to live their life they forget that sometimes they need to stop. If you’re always rushing things happen in a hurry, but if you take the time to stop and slow down, so does the world. It’s all about how you choose to see things. Perhaps that’s why your grandfather sat here. He chose to let things go slowly so he felt that he had all the time in the world.”
You look out across the park again, feeling hot tears sting in your eyes.
“How do you feel sitting here?” She asks.
You wipe at your eyes and smile softly, “I feel peaceful.”
She chuckles softly, “then perhaps that’s all you needed.”
You turn and look at her, “would you like to go get a cup of coffee?” You curl a lock of hair around your finger. “My treat.”
“As much as I would love to spend more time with you, I’m afraid I have to decline the coffee. You see…it just goes straight through me.” She holds her hand out to you and you’re finally able to see it clearly. It’s nothing but bone.
“Oh,” you gasp.
She then reaches into her robes and produces a handful of hard candies. “I’m afraid I never ate these that you gave me but…I do enjoy looking at them.”
“That’s fine really,” You look up at her. “It actually explains some things.”
She turns and you see behind the hood a bit, you see sharp angles and white, a dark socket peering out at you. “You aren’t afraid?”
“Should I be?” You ask. “Are you going to-”
She starts laughing, “no, no. I’m not going to reap you,” she sighs and leans back. “I’ve been enjoying sitting here with you. Your grandfather was worried you’d be lonely, I never expected you to be able to comprehend me.”
“My grandfather?” You ask.
“When I sat beside him I could sense it. He was worried that since you moved away from your mother you were lonely. He wanted to reach out but he didn’t want to bother you.”
Your heart sinks and you grip onto your knees tightly.
“I don’t know why but when I saw you sitting here I felt compelled to join you. I had no idea you could see me until you offered me gum that day.”
“I’m glad you did,” you murmur. “I’ve enjoyed talking to you all this time. I’ve never felt so relaxed or calm with someone like I do with you.”
She reaches out, touching your cheek and running her fingers through your hair. You look up, seeing under the hood for the first time. The skull doesn’t look human, it’s more animal. The muzzle long and full of sharp teeth. Behind the empty sockets, you can see gold coins suspended inside. Her neck is wrapped with gold as well and you find yourself marveled by her.
“You’re staring,” she chuckles.
“Sorry I just,” you put your hand over her’s on your cheek. “I’m so glad to finally be able to see you.”
She tilts her head, “I’m happy you aren’t afraid.”
“Even if you can’t have coffee,” you start, “I’d still like to spend more time with you.”
“Me too,” she dips down, kissing your knuckles gently. “I have to go for now,” she replies. “But if you’d like to tomorrow I could cook for you.”
“You can cook?” You gasp.
“I enjoy Barefoot Contessa, what can I say?” She stands and takes your hand, helping you to stand. “I’ll come to your home. Does that sound fine?”
You nod, still holding her hand. “Yeah, I’ll have to clean tonight,” you smile up at her. “Let me give you my address and-”
She shakes her head, “No need, I know where you are.”
You flinch and then laugh, “I guess death always knows where you are.”
“Exactly, until tomorrow then.” She vanishes, like a breath of cold air, slowly evaporating from the ground up.
You hold your hand she had been holding against your chest, it was cold but you didn’t mind. You rush home, starting to clean immediately. You realize you have sucky cutlery and pans so you go out, using your emergency credit card to buy expensive cookware, all to impress Death. You can’t help but laugh at yourself as you unpack it and wash it. You want Death to like your home and be marveled by your kitchen.
“I’m sure this isn’t what you expected Grandpa,” you sigh to yourself as you relax on the sofa after everything is done.
You wake up, having fallen asleep on the sofa. You sit up and the blanket falls away from you. You hear movement in the kitchen and you see a dark robe move from around the corner. You jump up and stand in the corner, watching as she cooks at the stove.
“Good morning,” she murmurs and you jump. She turns, her hood down and you see her full skull and the large, black horns that curve around the back of her head. “Sleep well?”
“Yeah,” you say breathlessly. “When did you…”
“About an hour ago. You were so cute and peaceful asleep so I just put the blanket on you and made myself at home.”
You come closer, standing beside her and watching her cook for a moment. She puts her hand on your back and you turn, looking up at her and you instinctively close your eyes and tilt your head up. You feel something cold and hard against your lips and you gently push back. She runs her fingers through your hair and then caresses them down the nape of your neck. You shiver and she pulls back.
“I’m sorry,” she whispers.
“No,” you smile, “I liked it.”
You feel as if she’s smiling back at you and she taps your cheek. “Go sit down, I’ll feed you in a moment.”
You take a seat, watching as she prepares your meal. Your mind is racing with questions but as she turns you can’t can’t help but grow excited. She sets the plate down and stands there, her hands folded before her as you look down and you suddenly bust out laughing.
“What’s wrong?” She gasps.
“Nothing,” you grin, “I just didn’t expect you to make a smiley face with the eggs and bacon.”
She huffs and takes a seat, “I thought you’d enjoy it was all.No need to laugh.”
You reach out and peck her on the cheek, “I like it, it was just a surprise. Don’t pout.” You sit back and start your breakfast as she sits there and watches. Her head turns for a moment as if listening to the door.
“Is something wrong?” You ask. “You seem distracted.”
She glances back at you, “sorry, I guess it’s all part of the job.” She then sighs and touches her cheek. “You can see me, but you don’t seem to notice anything else. How odd.”
“There’s other things?” You ask, wiping your mouth.
She cups her hand around your ear and you hear something, voices whispering and laughing. You hear a dark, rumbling voice whispering thankful words of love.
“What is that?” You ask.
“Other things,” she removes her hand. “There’s a strange inhabitant in your upstairs neighbor. Then again, I’m not too different.”
You glance up at your ceiling then back ather. “Maybe I can only see you,” you start, “because you want me to.”
“Huh?” She jerks her head up.
“You appeared to me when you came to join me on the park bench, because you were fulfilling my grandfather’s last wish,” you look at her, your heart hammering. “Did you like me or want me to see you?”
“Oh, I don’t-” she fidgets, obviously flustered. “I don’t know. Maybe. I’m having a hard time remembering back then and I just-” you kiss her and her tense shoulders sag and she touches your cheek.
“Yes,” she whispers softly. “I want to kiss you that day just to see you smile. I felt so strange and I was so grateful when you spoke to me.”
You smile and kiss her again and sit in her lap, her hands rub up your back, pushing up your shirt and touching bare skin. She sighs softly as you arch your back at her touch.
“So soft,” she coos. “Am I too cold?”
You shake your head, “it feels nice.”
She kisses your neck and nudges against your shoulder and you wrap your arms around her neck. “I’m happy you’re here.”
She squeezes you and nods, “that makes me happy.” She then picks you up and you hold tight, holding your breath as she carries you to the bedroom. She lays you down gently. She stands before you, removing her robes and letting them drop to the floor.
The gold wrapping around her neck wraps down her shoulders and arms, creating a sinewy musculature down her chest and thighs ending at her knees. You stare, marveling at the beauty of her.
“Lay back,” she coaxes, pushing on your shoulder as cuddles up beside you, she pushes a knee between your legs and opens your thighs. “Let me touch you,” she whispers into your ear. You bite your lip and nod, relaxing in her arms as her hand pets down your chest and then rubs against your mound. She slips a finger between your folds, stroking your clit in small circles. You gasps and roll your hips, meeting her touch. Her arm around your back adjusts slightly, allowing her to grasp your breast and grope freely.
“You’re getting wet already,” she whispers into your ear.
“Ah-” your grunt and bite your lip, turning your head and kissing her as you feel her slip two fingers inside. You moan, arching your back as she moves inside of your, her fingers curling inside and hitting that sweet spot inside you.
“So warm,” she moans as if pleasured with you. “So much.” her fingers thrust harder, deeper as if feeling your desire, her hand around your breasts squeezes harder and you let out a long moan.
“Yes, I love your voice,” she bites your shoulder.
Your head falls back against her shoulder and your grunt and moan, your body beginning to shudder. She pulls her fingers out slowly and you whine. She chuckles, kissing your cheek as she pushes them back inside with another. You grip onto her and you begin to tremble and shudder, you thighs pinching together as you writhe in her grip.
She kisses and coos to you, slowly easing her fingers out and kissing your cheek as you go limp in her arms.
“Wow,” you pant, “I can see stars.”
She giggles, cuddling against you and running her fingers through your hair and you kiss the gold around her neck. “It feels so nice to please,” she murmurs. “I can’t wait to do it again.”
You blush and nuzzle against her shoulder, hiding your face, “you’re making me blush.”
She strokes down your back, tickling along your spine. “After lunch, let’s take a walk.”
You nod, smiling up at her, “I’d love that.” You clutch her hand, lacing your fingers with hers.
