Sebastian the Slime
🕑 Added 2023-01-04 20:00:01 +0000 UTCOne of my first characters I consider recurring, as well as having a more fully fleshed out personality, history, and my first steps into towards building as whole. Sebastian was a different one and I combined some of my favorite elements from other works to create him. Specifically his suit came from Hellboy 2.

You’ve been working with a new partner at the precinct, which usually wouldn’t be an issue at all, but they were a by-the-book, no-nonsense caricature. Going out on patrol and duty was an exasperating experience. You used to love your job, you had a great partner before, but this new guy came through the door and your chief excitedly passed you off onto him.
Officer Sebastian, as he insisted you call him, was tall, always looking down at you as if you were beneath him. Sure, you were shorter than most of the others in the precinct, but none of them looked down on you. He seemed miffed to be partnered with a human anyway. You were quite sure what he looked like because he always had to wear a form containment suit in order to keep his shape and work normally. All you should see of him was his one giant eye behind the glass dome for his head.
“You seem in a foul mood,” he says one night as you’re out on patrol.
“You’re going slow,” you scoff, “you’re going way under the speed limit.”
“I’m obeying it,” Sebastian sniffs back at you.
You grunt and grumble under your breath to yourself.
“What was that?” he quips at you.
You snarl and sit upright, smacking your palm against the median of the car. “I said! Why do you always have to have such a stick up your ass, Officer Sebastian?” You sneer his name slowly at him.
“I don’t have an ass,” he replies back. “The stick that serves as my spine serves to help me stay erect and-”
You slam your hands on the dashboard to make him be quiet. “That’s not what I meant.”
He sighs, “have you eaten? Is that why you’re in such a mood?”
You frown at him and fold your arms tight across your chest. “I don’t need anything except a new partner.”
Sebastian’s quiet for a long time and you feel like it’s deafening. “Are you saying you don’t like me?” He asks.
You frown, feeling horrible you said that to him out loud. “You’re…you’re difficult!” You blurt out. “I’m sure you’re a very nice person outside of work, but while you’re at work you drive me crazy! You’re so rigid about everything. You keep your nose so close to the grindstone you can’t smell the flowers.”
He’s quiet again for another long pause. You sigh and lean back in your seat, rubbing your temple.
“I didn’t realize you felt this way…” he clears his throat, “it certainly explains your horrible attitude.”
“I deserve that,” you mutter in defeat.
“I asked for you, you know,” he says and you feel a shock go through your body at his words. “When I knew I was being transferred I researched everyone who would be working at my new station. You, out of everyone, stood out.”
You watch him, your eyes darting over him as if expecting to catch him in a lie. “Why?” You ask, furrowing your brow.
“You graduated from your class at the top of your class but you weren’t already hired upon graduation and it took you a long time to even get your foot in the door. Once you did have a job you fought harder than anyone only to maybe come up an inch above the rest. Your arrest records are some of the best and yet you’ve barely received any accommodation and-”
“Are you trying to make me feel worse?” You scoff.
“If you look at my records, they’re exactly the same.” He turns and looks at you as he stops at a red light. “No one wants to hire the guy who has to wear a very expensive suit in order to do his job. That’s why I keep my head down, that’s why I do every thing as precise as I do. Because you know more than anyone you will be the first one blamed if you fuck up.”
“Oh,” you lean back into your seat as he presses on the gas pedal. You feel horrible, you feel just like those assholes in your class who used to laugh at you because you were so short and you put so much effort into everything. You became one of them simply because you didn’t want to deal with Sebastian.
“You should eat something,” he says, pulling up in front of your favorite deli.
“How did you know-” you look up at him, his one eye squinting as if he was smiling.
He gives you a shrug as he gets out of the car. “I’m your partner, I know these things.”
“Uh,” you watch him as he heads towards the door of the diner, feeling a little like a school impressed by her upperclassman, “yeah, right.” You follow him into the diner.
It’s a little easier to be around Sebastian after that conversation. You both feel a little more at ease with one another, able to understand each other better. You start following his lead and begin acting a little more professional. Meanwhile, he’s learning from you and loosening up. You notice he’s actually making friends around the station, even starting to join in on the weekend bar meets and the drunken karaoke parties the Sargent hosts once a month for the staff.
It’s during one such evening you’ve had a bit too much to drink. The week was a stressful one for you, having received a rather intimidating case that had the both of you on edge trying to work on while also completing the rest of your jobs. So, letting loose seemed like the logical thing for you to do at the time. You drank more than you usually do and soon you’re nearly falling asleep in your booth as Sebastian tries to sing at the karaoke mic, he’s not good, even nearly unconscious drunk you can tell that.
You’re not sure when or how, but you wake up in a car. You groan and rub your eyes. “Where the hell,” you groan.
“Here,” Sebastian hands you a bottle of water. “You need to drink it all.”
“Sebastian?” You squint at him as you take the water in your hands. “What happened?”
“You passed out,” he replied, “and while you were unconscious, the waiter at the bar tried to feel you up.”
You go cold, suddenly feeling too painfully sober. “What?”
Sebastian reaches out, taking your hand and squeezing it tight. “I have your back,” he tells you. “I got you out of there and I’m taking you home. Now drink.”
“Thanks,” you murmur as he takes his hand back, placing it ten and two on the wheel. You crack open the bottle of water and drink deeply from it. “Sebastian?” You murmur.
“Yes?” He tilts his head slightly in your direction.
“I’m sorry,” you start softly, “I don’t think I ever really apologized to you for how I treated you when you first arrived. I was really awful to you and I had no reason to be. You’ve been and an amazing partner.”
“I didn’t exactly try either,” he shakes his head, “I fed off your negativity and didn’t even attempt to push through it. I just was concerned with not making waves but…I accept your apology.”
“Sebastian?”
“What now?” He asks.
“Pull over…I need to puke.”
He whips the car over quickly, allowing you enough time to lean out the car door and vomit on the curb.
He sighs, touching his finger to the glass of his helmet. “Boy am I glad I can’t smell that.”
After you’ve finished spilling your guts and he gets you home he walks you to your apartment, making sure you get inside without incident. He sets you down on your tiny sofa and takes your shoes off.
“If you need anything, call me. I’m worried you’ll get alcohol poisoning,” he takes your phone and brings his number up so all you have to do is press send.
“You’re so sweet,” you grunt.
“I’m merely being a friend,” he goes to stand up but you grab him and plant a kiss on his glass and then topple over onto the sofa.
You wake up in the morning, head throbbing and body aching. “Oh fuck,” you grunt and you check your phone, there are several text messages from Sebastian checking on you.
“I’m fine, just hungover,” you fall back onto the sofa, grateful to have the day off to recover.
A few minutes later there is a knocking on the door and you grunt, forcing yourself up to answer the door.
“May I come in?” Sebastian asks, holding up a carton of hot coffee and a few paper bags.
“Sebastian?” You grumble, reaching out and touching his glass. “Oh shit, you’re real.”
He lets himself in and you huff, “I must look disgusting.”
“Of course, but I do not blame you or judge you for it,” he says with a shrug. “Where do you keep your cutlery?”
You point to a decorative tin with your forks and such in it. He finds everything else pretty easily while you slink off to wash your face and change from the vomit caked clothes into something a little more bearable.
When you slither back out he has your table set with food and coffee. “I hope you feel like eating because you need to.”
“Why are you doing this?” You ask as you sit down.
He’s still for a moment, thinking to himself. “You know what? I’m not quite sure.”
You shove a piece of bacon into your mouth., “you don’t know why you’re caring for someone.”
“Well,” he scoffs and crosses his arms across his chest. “It’s not that exactly it’s…I don’t understand my motivation behind it. It’s not something for work, even though you are my partner. I shouldn’t really have a relationship with you outside of work if I was truly being professional.”
“You’re being an ass stick again, Sebastian,” you slurp down then coffee and sigh. “So good.”
He huffs and lays his arms back down at his side again. “Would you say we are friends now?” He touches the glass of his helmet, but you’re unsure why.
“Yeah,” you glance up at him. “What else could it be?”
Not long after, Sebastian leaves to allow you to recuperate, telling you he will see you bright and early at work tomorrow. You make some cranky quip about it and thank him wholeheartedly for his help.
The next day at work before you even have a chance to settle in and greet Sebastian you receive word there has been a major break in your case. The two of you head out instantly, finding there is a hold up in an abandoned building. You two suit up and head inside, splitting up and scoping out the building trying to find your culprit.
You hear a scuffle and follow the sound, sliding along the wall until you come to a corner. You hear a gunshot and two men arguing. You take a deep breath and steel yourself as you step out from around the corner. You barely have time to register what happens next. It was almost as if they were waiting on you because a gun is being pressed against your forehead and your forced onto your knees.
You then hear a loud shout and something presses against your back and wraps around you. You feel it, cold and wet against your cheek as it flies at the gun, knocking it from the culprit’s hand and then the strange liquid surrounds his entire head. The man struggles, trying to free himself to breathe. The other man tries to come forward but the slime lashes out at him, knocking the gun away and surrounding his head as well.
You scramble, grabbing your gun back up and collecting the others as the backup finally comes in. You watch as the slime recedes, collecting back into Sebastian’s suit until he’s standing erect again. He rushes to you, grabbing you and wrapping you up in his arms.
“Are you alright?” He gasps.
You wrap your arms around him and nod, “yeah, Seb, I’m fine,” you squeeze tight onto him. “I’m fine.”
He presses the glass to your forehead and sighs in relief. “I panicked I…I wanted to kill him. I almost did.”
You touch the side of his neck and smile at him. “It’s ok, you did great.”
“I realized…I couldn’t lose you,” he murmurs quietly.
You grab his hand, “let’s get outside. They have it from here,” you whisper and you tug him along behind you. After everything’s said and done and you’re heading out at the end of the day you grab him.
“We need to talk,” you murmur so only he can hear, you hold his hand preciously.
He nods, “I’d appreciate that.”
You both go back to your apartment and you sit down on your sofa. “What happened today?” You ask.
“I saw you on the ground and your gun kicked away,” he starts off, his voice low and slow. “And I just…something in me snapped and I couldn’t stand it. It was so offensive to everything inside of me,” you grip his chest. “And all I could think was that the person I loved could be hurt or worse.”
Your eyes widen and your lips part as your heart stops and feel a sudden electric shock run through your body. “The person you love?”
He freezes and gasps, his voice leaving him and then he relaxes. “Yes,” he holds his head in his hands. “I love you,” he shakes his head and raises up. “But I don’t expect it to be returned…this is something I have to deal with myself and…” he stops and touches your cheek, his thumb running over your bottom lip.
You’re smiling, a great big grin spread across your face. “I love you too,” you whisper back to him and you throw your arms around his neck.
He squeezes you tightly then pushes you back. “Wait,” he reaches up and slowly removes his helmet, the slime inside rising up and out and then forming into a humanoid shape before you. He touches his chest. “This…is me.” He glows slightly, his body shimmering, looking like the surface of the ocean.
You touch him, your fingers slipping through his body. “I see why you use the suit.”
He chuckles, dipping down and meeting your lips. You kiss, hoping he can at least feel it. You pull back, your lips cool and glossy. You touch your lips then smile up at Sebastian.
“Bad?” He worries.
You shake your head, “do it again.”
He leans down again, kissing you gently, his hands touching the sides of your neck. He whimpers and pulls back. “Sorry,” he looks up at you. “I’m nervous. This is new to me.”
“It’s ok,” you kiss his forehead. “We can go slow.”
