The idea for this collection was birthed about a decade ago when I found myself writing often about the experience, trying to find the words to illustrate the beauty and spiritual pleasure I was feeling. “I should publish a collection called Poems About Fisting”. It was a joke at first, but it shouldn’t have been.
Fisting is taboo in our wider culture, relegated to bad jokes about lesbians or examples of sexual extreme. It’s highly regulated even on sex and porn sites, censorship and anti-obscenity laws love to wrap fisting in red-tape. Sex-education doesn’t acknowledge it, a lot of people cringe just hearing the word.
Vaginal fisting, like most experiences that center on women’s pleasure or queer sex, is often considered grotesque or deviant. The things we desire are seen as shameful. We are raised steeped in misogynistic myths and derogatory commentary about our bodies. Shame is a huge barrier to pleasure, and power. Vaginas are a huge source of both pleasure and power, knowing that is revolutionary.
Hand sex is so intimate, and fingers are gifted with dexterity no other body part can boast. I use the word ‘open’ over and over in these poems and journal entries, scribbled over the last decade. What a beautiful word to capture a sexual experience. I want people to feel safe exploring their capabilities, marvel at their prowess, delight in their pleasure.

Some folks might not know this, but United Kingdom law described fisting as "life-endangering", and was banned as obscene material (along with female ejaculation!) until 2019. So I am super excited for this!! 😀
