Witch Hands

I have an early memory of sitting on my grandmothers lap while she read out loud to me, and trying to straighten out her crooked fingers. She jumped from the ache, arthritis had made them stiff, I didn’t know.
Watching my own hands age, watching time do it’s thing, I think about her often. I think about all the work her hands did, and all the work mine are doing. These hands do so much loving.
Tattoos have helped me love parts of my body better. They’ve helped me feel a sense of ownership, “I live here, it’s mine”. I wanted to love my hands this same way, so I started decorating my left hand. (I’ll get to the right, I have lots of time.)
The designs tell a story, my story so far. It’s a reminder of how to orient myself, onward.
I think about being an old woman. A grandchild, by blood or by chance, on my lap while I read out loud. I want my hands to be full of scars and stories, wrinkles and signs of life.

This makes me emotional too. And then I learn about genetic memory and it makes me even more emotional how our hands know what to do because of them. ❤️ Love that you get those generational glimpses while you’re sewing.

This really resonated with me! I think about my hands a lot, I’m so grateful for how they help me interact with the world. I remember my mother’s and grandmother’s hands, sewing, and how when I sew I look like them, just a bit, in how we hold the needle and thread.
