Sunset Ridge

Low to mid-light. Not good with long exposure to direct sunlight. Don't put them in a constant draught or in the cold. I've found it's best not to put water directly on the leaves. They're very easy to propagate. Take part of the stem with the leaf (use a knife or scissors, although I've done it just by breaking but with lesser results), put in water. I read somewhere to cut off half the leaf after a couple of days, which is supposed to encourage roots. I've done it this way, and it works. They won't all 'take' but I've had a very good success rate following these steps. My current ones have come from a couple of neighbours as an expression of friendship or a thank you for a favour I've done. It's a great present from my point of view, as it costs them nothing and it creates a bond between us.

Yeah, i had a visceral reaction to that line

Oh, Heart. I feel like I could have written this post myself, down to the "yeet". Your writings have always resonated with me, mostly because you have this ability to give words to the things I feel, and eloquently so. Thank you so much for sharing these things; they impact other people more than you know. 🖤

Oh I have never started with violets! Are the temperamental? Lots of sun or mid? Also this is exactly the right attitude for a potted plant!

I always consider pot plants to be a good alternative to flower arrangements. If they last longer than a couple of weeks, you're ahead. We have an orchid that has lasted for 12 months. It's just starting to lose flowers now, but we expect it to last for quite a while yet. Personally, I've been propagating indoor violets. I love them. The key is to find a spot they like and keep the water up to them. There's something very satisfying about seeing flowers appear on something that started as a leaf cutting in a glass of water.

I always admired flowers in offices, especially orchids, and never knew why they were always beautiful in difficult environments. Doctors especially buy new flowers each week. Often they have a subscription. Depending on the kind of Orchid you buy (if it was meant for a subscription or office), you might be measuring your third-week-running-efforts against a cheat - just bought yesterday. Your efforts "despite" against a new start or a situation that is so different from yours they are not the same just because they both have an orchid. The one pictured looks lovely today! :)
