I took this today for her, because when she was visiting her parents this morning she asked to see her baby book so she could send me photos from her childhood. She sent me picture after picture that flooded my heart; sitting in her sisters lap, curled up asleep in a laundry basket, grinning at a birthday cake with her eyes shining.
The very best one must have been taken on a trip to Florida. There she is, fearless, sitting inside the mouth of a giant taxidermied alligator, mischievous twinkle in her eye. A tough little tiny thing who knows she’s trouble. This photograph almost kills me. I made it the background on my phone immediately.
I still have these panics every now and then: What am I doing? My hands get sweaty and I clam up, imagining the hundreds of ways this will end terribly. But she deserves such a happy ending, this brave babe sitting in a ‘gators mouth, smiling on a bed of teeth.
I want to make her smile, so I strip down in my front hall in the cool afternoon shadows and I try to be brave too.
