They both look older and wiser, but they’re both the same kind-hearted, funny, thoughtful and attractive people I fell in love with so many years ago. Within moments we fell into synch and picked up where we left off, this time with a lot more kids and dogs underfoot.
She did kiss me, and I hugged her so tight, I forgot how tiny she was in my arms, I crushed her in my hello and she squealed and loved it. She didn’t notice my hands, we were too busy, and I didn’t care, I could feel from her glow she still loved me and I soaked it up. He and I absolutely retained that intensity, which was comforting. We were only alone for a fraction of a second but my fucking god I missed his face, the expression he made as he pulled me close and kissed me made my heart explode. Just like I remembered.
So much has happened, we have so many stories for each other, but we’re still the same silly fucks who fell for each other all those years ago.
It was far too short, but long enough to see their families, say things left unsaid, and take a hundred photos of their faces. “It won’t be 9 years next time,” we all promise. “It can’t be,” there’s tears in my eyes and they tease me for them. And I hold them close and say goodbye again.
