“Thanks for…that,” said Taylor awkwardly to the well-endowed, half-naked young man standing outside of his dorm. He pushed a t-shirt into the guy’s chest.
A wolfish grin spread across Jack’s face. “Thank you too,” he said, leaning down for a kiss.
Taylor blocked the kiss with his hand, pushing Jack away in the process. Taylor then stepped back into his apartment, closed the door, and headed back to his bedroom. Time to get some sleep.
Over the next few days, Taylor began to notice that his body temperature seemed higher than usual. He constantly felt heated and was unsure of exactly why. Taylor also found that his nipples were somewhat more sensitive, and that his chest sometimes tingled with the same heat that filled the rest of his body.
Taylor’s clothing became slightly more awkwardly fitting on him, and less comfortable than he was used to the clothes being. It was only as he was standing in the mirror one morning that he began to take notice of certain changes. Taylor had always been a thin guy, but lately, his chest seemed somewhat…fuller. Clearly he had put on some weight.
Taylor continued with his usual routine. On the weekends, he would stay out all night with friends. On Sunday mornings, he would sprawl himself across the couch and flip through channels in the dorm living room. Sometimes he would stop at the news, and hear snippets regarding the cow-person epidemic. He would shudder to himself, then continue to channel-surf.
It wasn’t long before Taylor’s chest had gotten even larger, leaving him confused. Replacing his formerly lean chest were soft…hills…of flesh. Taylor also began to notice that his body hair was thinning out, while the hair on his head felt thicker now. The seats of all his pants had gotten tight at his backside, and most strangely, his green iris’ seemed larger than they had ever been before.
Taylor started to get attention. Some of the guys at his college took to watching him as he walked by. He wasn’t used to attracting much notice. He had always been a small, plain type. But when upperclassmen started approaching to ask him out, Taylor couldn’t deny his pleasure. His confidence surged, and he found himself dressing in tighter jeans and more fitted shirts to show off his athletic body. He skipped a haircut, allowing his blonde hair to hang in his eyes. He continued to go out partying on the weekends, the good times sometimes bleeding into Mondays. One night, he must have taken it too far, because he woke up in the hospital.
Taylor’s eyes darted about the room. He had an IV line in his right arm. He must have been admitted for dehydration. Sitting up, he began to disconnect the IV.
“You’re awake.” A doctor entered.
Taylor nodded. “Did I pass out again?”
The doctor frowned.
“Look, I know the drill. You get me hydrated then free up the bed. Is my discharge paperwork ready?”
“Mr. Lawrence, I’m afraid this is a little more serious than a hangover. Were you aware that you’re pregnant?”
Taylor blinked. “What?” he said, unsure of whether this was a joke.
He knew that it was a thing now. Male pregnancy. It was rare, but he’d seen it once or twice on the news. Random cases were popping up around the world in recent months.
“Indeed,” said the doctor, appraising Taylor’s blank expression. “Perhaps you need some time to process this.”
It was the last thing Taylor wanted to hear. He was always careful—always used condoms. He hadn’t had sex in weeks. Not since his one-night-stand with that jock guy, Jack.
Taylor went back to college and paced his dorm. He growled under his breath, disgusted, debating, resenting himself.
His family was super conservative. They didn’t even know he was gayyet. No matter what, they couldn’t find out. Not about the pregnancy. Not about any of this.
Taylor absently scratched his ribs. He slid his hand beneath his shirt, rubbing at an itchy bump just under the left side of his chest. On the surface, it felt like a large bug bite. But he could feel the knot beneath his skin as well, like a cyst or something. Taylor heaved a sigh. This was the least of his problems. He removed his fingers from his shirt then walked to the couch, where he sat down with his laptop, and began to browse the clinics in his area.
It was only a few days later that Taylor was sitting in a medical gown in an exam room of the abortion clinic a few blocks away from the college. He rubbed the bandage on the inside of his forearm. He’d had to do extensive bloodwork as a preliminary measure. The nurse must have taken eight vials. I just want to get this over with… Taylor thought as he fidgeted nervously on the bed.
The door opened and two people in lab coats entered the room: a man and a woman.
“Finally,” said Taylor impatiently.
But the doctors were frowning at him, much the way the doctor at the hospital had.
What is it this time? Taylor wondered. He suddenly feared that he was about to receive some horrible diagnosis.
“Our suspicions were corroborated by your bloodwork results, and as such, things are a little…complicated, Mr. Lawrence. You see, you have the gene. Virtually all pregnant males do.”
“Gene?” said Taylor blankly.
“The cow gene.”
Taylor blinked. “What are you talking about?” he said, his voice rising.
The two doctors exchanged glances.
The male physician spoke carefully. “The gene…doesn’t run in your family?”
“Of course not!” Taylor snapped. “You’ve obviously made a mistake.” He was getting annoyed.
“Young man, we’re going to need you to relax,” said the female doctor.
“When can I get this stupid procedure over with,” said Taylor. If anything, he was getting more tense. “Answer me. What the hell is going on?”
“As we said, things are complicated,” said the female doctor solemnly. “If I’m not mistaken, it appears that the cow gene we found in your blood was contracted from your fetus—or more likely, fetuses.”
“Contracted?” said Taylor.
“That tends to be the case in some of these situations. In the next few weeks, you will begin experiencing changes. In fact, they may have already begun.”
“What do you mean?” Taylor was back in panic mode. He unconscious hugged himself. “I'm pregnant with a c-c-”
“A human/cow splice. The gene must have been inherited from the father of the offspring.”
“Get it out!” said Taylor in alarm.
The doctors again exchanged looks.
“I’m afraid, Mr. Lawrence, that your request poses some problems,” said the male doctor. “Legally, there are no ground rules regarding termination in these matters. In addition to that, we would likely be aborting not one, but several embryos—if we can call them that. Studies have shown that even in this early stage, the fetuses are known to exhibit strong movement. There are no laws on the books stating whether or not we can abort.”
“Meaning...”
“Our protocol is simply to not get involved. In recent months, there have been massive amounts of abortion requests to our facility and our partners. Our legal team has advised us to turn these patients away. There’s too great a risk of liability. You won't find a clinic on this coast that will go anywhere near you, I’m afraid.”
Taylor was pale by then, his breathing thin. This was all too much for him to handle. Soon all he could see were bright whites, and reds. He lunged at the male doctor. That was all he remembered before he awoke in another hospital.
-
He was in a psychiatric unit, though he didn't belong there. He supposed it was better than sitting in jail. Taylor sat curled up in his bed, blankly staring out the window. It had only been a few days and the facility was working on his discharge.
Perhaps it had been a bad idea to attack the clinic doctors. Luckily, he had been forgiven for his temporary lapse in sanity—it had been attributed to the shock of his diagnosis. The clinic wasn’t pressing charges, granted Taylor went through a 72-hour psych evaluation, and participated in weekly group therapy sessions over the course of 12 months.
When Taylor walked out of the hospital, his mother, Martha, was waiting outside for him. She wore a worried expression and had no clue what was going on.
Taylor embraced her.
“Honey, what happened? Are you okay?” she probed.
“It’s fine, mom. Just a stupid mistake,” Taylor responded, holding the embrace for several minutes longer, before finally breaking away. Taylor gave his mother a forced smile, before walking alongside her to the car. Taylor would be spending the rest of the weekend at home with his parents.
It was still hard to believe that he was carrying some sort of cow-creature inside of him. And that its DNA was leeching into him, infecting him with its abnormalities. The whole concept make Taylor’s skin crawl. He didn’t even want to think about it. During the car ride home, Taylor couldn’t help examining himself extensively in the passenger seat. He took in every inch of his body that he could see without the aid of a mirror. Everything seemed ordinary. For a fleeting instant, he hoped this was just some ridiculous mistake.
The thought of the cow girls he sometimes saw on the news nauseated him. He had never actually seen a cow…guy…before. The center of this apparent epidemic was two towns over, so the phenomena was still relatively alien to Taylor’s family and the college town they lived in.
During his third once-over of himself, Taylor couldn’t ignore how much more his chest had swelled since he was initially told that he was pregnant. He practically had a small pair of breasts. Who was he kidding? He did. Taylor took to staring as they gently bobbed as the car weaved through the winding streets. His mother glanced his way, but opted not to say anything.
Finally, the car pulled into the driveway of Taylor’s childhood home.
“How about it?” said Martha. “A much-needed break from your crazy college friends?” She smiled.
Taylor tore his eyes away from his chest. He forced a smile of his own. “Sounds like a plan.”
