When Olivia got home, she stuffed herself until her belly button popped out. Then she sat there gasping, her face and body flushed, as she marveled down at the bulging protrusion. She was positively packed.
It was taking increasing amounts of time to achieve this level of fullness, which she not only craved, but needed to maintain the lie of her condition. Each time she was filled herself to the brim, stretched to bursting, she thought her body became a little bit heavier, and her belly, a little bit larger. With real pregnancy, there were limits to growth. But with Olivia, she could make herself as fat as she wanted.
It was unnerving. Stuffing and stretching herself was what made the condition look realistic, but it also had the consequence of causing her body to grow. There couldn’t be one without the other. Yes, she looked at term with child by then. But it wasn’t as though she could just stop. Because once she stopped binge eating, her belly would sag and soften, and people would quickly realize that she had never been pregnant at all.
Olivia was presently sitting on her couch, breathing heavily as she lightly rubbed her swollen belly which sat perched in her lap. She was wearing a nightshirt she had gotten during her latest trip to the maternity store, the cotton material going down to her knees. It was formfitting, but not too tight.
The pressure could be overwhelming at times. Olivia had gotten used to it. The uncomfortable tightness, the pricks of pain deep in her abdomen, the sensation of stretching and growing as she breathed thinly, trying to stay awake despite the potent desire to pass out right there.
She found comfort in the discomfort; her sweaty flesh and overheated body. She squirmed, moaned, and gasped out. That had been a big meal. She felt fuller than ever before, but then, that was every binge. Each time, she filled herself a little bit more.
Her belly gurgled. A large belch erupted from her throat then her eyelids fluttered. Resigning her intentions to get up and go to her bedroom, Olivia slumped back and fell asleep right there.
-
She liked the weekends. Then again, didn’t everyone? Of course, in the past, Olivia might have been a little bit more outgoing. She would get dinner or see a movie. Even, occasionally, meet up with a friend or two. Sometimes she would go drinking, and maybe pick up a cute guy at one of the bars in the financial district.
But lately, Olivia was decidedly a bit more introverted. She had found a new hobby, that being eating. On Saturday, she decided to try some more of the supplements she had purchased at Mommy Madness. The meal shakes had a bit of an aftertaste, but it wasn’t awful. Olivia gulped down three, smacking her lips against the thick creamy coating that now covered the inside of her mouth. She tried some of the cakes and granola bars, and they weren’t bad either. But inevitably, she found herself stuffing down the cookies. They were her absolute favorite and just tasted delicious. If Peggy had done one good thing in her life, it was introducing Olivia to these snacks. Grabbing up both bulging bags of beverage supplements and maternity snacks, Olivia went over to the recliner, plopped herself down, and turned on a movie.
She ate all throughout the two and a half hour flick, favoring the cookies particularly. At the rate she was going, she might have to make another stop at the maternity store before the weekend was up. Olivia lightly shook her head at her own antics, an absent smile tugging her lips. God, she was a mess these days. Her phone rang, but Olivia didn’t even bother to check the caller ID. She was sure that it was just Mike again, calling to bother her about relationship nonsense. You’d think the guy would get the hint by now.
Olivia managed to completely demolish the two bags of snacks and shakes. And even then, her belly was grumbling. This stuff was supposed to have resolved her predicament yet she was still hungry. She supposed it had helped, just not enough. She still needed more. Olivia’s face twisted as her nipples started to ache. She wondered if her period was coming early this month. “Mgghhhh…” she groaned, as her breasts tingled. That was a new sensation. She looked down at herself, and for a moment, marveled at how swollen her nipples looked these days. They must have doubled in size, bulging out rather unnaturally. They remained uncomfortably erect no matter how long she waited. Lightly shaking her head, she sighed.
The doorbell rang.
Olivia blinked and turned off the television. She had half a mind to ignore it. It’s probably just Mike, she thought in irritation. Despite her better judgment, Olivia planted her feet firmly against the floor, braced her hands on both arms of the recliner she was submerged in, and with a grunt of effort, heaved herself to her feet.
She gasped for breath, her hand sliding to the underside of her belly. Then she waddled towards the door, feeling that idle mixture of befuddlement and unease that her formerly clean stride had descended to this awkward penguin rock, like an actual pregnant woman. Well, at least she was convincing.
Olivia fixed her face in a frown as she opened the door, but then found her jaw going slack. She stared in surprise at her grandmother.
“Liv?” said Nana, appearing equally as shocked as Olivia. “You stop returning my calls, I don’t hear from you for weeks—and this? You’re pregnant!? Why didn’t you tell me!?”
“I—um—” Olivia stammered, completely unprepared. “It’s…er…c-complicated?”
Nana looked simultaneously elated and infuriated. Olivia could sympathize with her ambivalence. “Complicated? You look ready to pop! What is going on, Olivia? Why would you hide something like this?”
Before Olivia knew it, her grandmother was hustling the both of them back into the living room. Olivia was immediately embarrassed by the state of the place, dirty dishes and food wrappings haphazardly littering every surface.
Nana tutted. “Goodness gracious, what is going on with you? Stress eating or just the cravings getting to you? Clearly you’re not getting any support from the father? Why don’t I make you something nicer than all this processed junk.”
Olivia found herself being led into her own kitchen by the hand, as though she was a small child again. Soon she was seated at the kitchen table, appreciating the nostalgia of watching her grandmother cook as nutty, tangy aromas washed over her.
“Nana, it’s…it’s just been a mess,” Olivia admitted, not even knowing where to start.
“Then we don’t have to talk about it,” Nana said. “Not now. Let’s just get you through this pregnancy and take things from there.”
Olivia gave a small nod, feeling relieved, if just for the time being. She knew this wasn’t going to end well, but for now, she just enjoyed her grandmother’s company.
-
There were lots of leftovers.
Nana had ordered in a bunch of groceries and made a whole pan of lasagna: Olivia’s favorite. Dessert was a homemade butter cake, both sweet and dense, creamy and heavy. Every bite of the meal had been like a taste of heaven.
As usual, Nana expressed her love through cooking and baking. It was the main thing all her grandchildren adored about her. But Olivia had always been a difficult case. She had never been a fan of food.
At least, until this “pregnancy.”
Nana had delighted in Olivia’s new and relentless appetite. She was only in town that evening, but promised to send Olivia more treats in the mail.
“I’ll get same-day delivery,” Nana had assured, even after Olivia told her that it wasn’t necessary. “Oh, and promise to tell me when the birth is coming up. I don’t want you to be alone, dear.”
Olivia agreed.
-
Nana left in her wake a variety of ingredients. One of them gave Olivia pause as she was rummaging in her fridge a few days later. It was a simple jar that read: LARD.
Olivia was still dealing with the issues of perpetual hunger, and the inconvenience of her midsection taking on a saggy appearance after only a few hours of not eating.
She knew it had to be out of true desperation that she found herself unscrewing the cover on the jar, dipping her finger into the oily, gooey, white substance, and sticking a glob of it into her mouth. She scrunched up her nose and fought the urge to spit it out. It tasted truly unpleasant on its own. Maybe she could try to integrate it into other things.
She tried putting it in a blender with some ice cream and fused it into a shake of sorts. She tasted it with a spoon, and only twitched slightly this time. It wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly an improvement.
She even tried baking later that day. It took a considerable amount of both physical and mental energy. It wasn’t as though she was good at this sort of thing. Olivia followed the simple instructions on the box of yellow cake she had picked up on her way home from work. In lieu of water and oil, she poured a large amount of lard into the flour and combined it all using an electric mixer. The product came out much gunkier than she imagined cake batter was supposed to be. It was more like clay; just a gelatinous blob.
It plopped down against the cake pan with a loud slapping noise. She put it in the oven, and waited. By then Olivia was flushed pink, breathless, and sweaty. She could really use a snack, and found herself longing for more of the lasagna she had completely demolished within hours of her Nana’s departure days earlier. Maybe learning to cook and bake could be worthwhile. It was true that she was depending too heavily on processed foods and take out.
After the cake had baked, cooled, and been covered with mountains of chocolate icing, Olivia set the whole thing on the kitchen table before her, and took a taste.
She closed her eyes as the flavor gushed through her mouth.
It was extremely greasy, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It actually tasted pretty good. And it hadn’t been too difficult to make if she was completely honest with herself.
Well,Olivia smiled to herself. It’s a start.
So she dug in, eating her way through the whole cake in one sitting. Afterwards, she felt unexpectedly sated.
-
That night, Olivia couldn’t sleep.
Her belly seemed to have only gotten tighter in the minutes and hours following her consumption of the lard-heavy cake. She felt anxious and breathless, but also uncomfortably pressurized, fidgeting until she kicked her sheets off, then took to rubbing her hands against her belly, realizing how tight her nightshirt had gotten on her since earlier that evening.
Soon Olivia was at the edge of the bed, cupping her abdomen, face contorted in discomfort as she drew in long, even breaths. Inelegantly, she heaved herself to her feet, stretching and arching, searching out some relief. She could feel her belly button bulging out prominently, her abdomen taut as though with a true pregnancy. It shuddered, and she groaned out. The pressure was only increasing.
Olivia gripped the edge of her dresser, groaning, and gasping, unable to miss the irony that she probably resembled a woman in labor at that moment. “Just digestion…” she grunted, lifting her right hand to resume rubbing circles on her stomach, urging her body to relax. She just needed a little time. Things would settle.
-
In the morning, she felt truly massive. Her belly was round, but softer now; a big round ball. She noticed that it was starting to outgrow her flanks as she marveled at her appearance in the mirror. She wondered if she looked due with more than one— maybe twins—by then.
Olivia tried her new pregnancy girdle. It took some squirming to get it on and latched, and afterwards, she felt a bit confined, but rather…supported. Her size had been decreased by an inch or two. She managed to button up her maternity blouse without too much difficulty, then regarded her reflection again. A pregnant professional. She smoothed her hands over her torso, which was rendered much firmer now by the girdle that kept everything tight and compact.
Nevertheless, she grabbed up a whole bag of bagels—about a dozen—to snack on during the drive to work. She scrunched up her face and gulped three spoons of lard before she departed, not sure why exactly, just abiding a silent decision to start consuming the substance regularly. She would have to make sure not to not overdo things so to avoid a significant growth spurt like the night before.
As Olivia eased herself down in the passenger seat of her sedan, the fit of the girdle only got more confining, but it was tolerable. Her belly pressing up against the steering wheel, Olivia started the car and headed for the office.
