Lisa screamed as her belly surged forward. Which made sense, as newborns grew rapidly. Didn’t babies double their birth weight in the first few months of infancy? Only, this was happening inside of Lisa. Her baby hadn’t been born, but had gone past the nine month mark. Her belly rose like dough, getting wider than the rest of her. Rachel thought it resembled a beach ball in it massiveness. And Lisa was laboring all the while, her body rocking and shuddering as it tried to eject a child that was three months past term. Lisa was twelve months pregnant and the whole situation was insane.
Rachel knew that she had gone too far. She unconsciously shook her head, tearing her eyes away as Lisa quaked and screamed. Rachel pinned her eyes to the remote as she took in a shuddering breath. She needed to get control of herself. And so, finally, she pressed the down arrow on the MONTHS setting.
Nothing happened.
Lisa was clutching what she could reach of her massive abdomen, huffing and puffing when she wasn’t screaming. She would suck in desperate breaths of air, like she could hardly breathe. Her abdomen was visibly squeezing and contracting, looking as though it was pulsating forcefully. “Nnghhhhh…godddd!” Lisa wailed. “What’s—happenning!?”
Rachel pressed hard and repetitively, but nothing happened. On the small panel, the level remained at 12 and the number remained, curiously, red.
Now Rachel was panicking. “S-Something w-wrong,” she stammered. “I—I d-don’t know wh-what to d-do.” Her hands were shaking. The remote clattered to the floor, the back cracking open and the batteries scattering.
Lisa screamed again, and Rachel found herself going to the other girl, clutching her hand, knowing that she had gotten the both of them in an insane predicament. This was dangerous.
“Gonna call an ambulance,” Rachel said as she continued to stare at Lisa who looked so small and overwhelmed, the orb of her belly practically crushing against her.
“No!” Lisa protested. “Don’t leave me! Ahhhhhhh!” she squeezed Rachel’s hand so hard it was painful, Lisa’s free hand clutching the side of her immense midsection. “It’s coming! Nrrrgghhh…noo…st-stop—ERRGHHHH!” Her thighs were spread painfully wide, her belly practically bouncing. “TOO…BIG!” Her skin was flushed a deep red hue, her body so sweaty she looked as though she just had climbed out of a swimming pool. Veins rose on the surface of her massive abdomen, accompanied by restive bulges of movement. “No, no, no…” Tears poured down her cheeks, her honeydew sized breasts heaving. Then her words became indecipherable rambles, raising in pitch as the pain escalated. Finally she devolved to screams on screams, that were almost human in their pitch and she couldn’t have been breathing much.
Then abruptly, Lisa fell silent, looking dazed, and drooling somewhat. Her belly continued to pump out and in, her eyes unfocused, and Rachel feared she was passing out. As Lisa’s hand went slack, Rachel took the opportunity to run off to get her phone. There was no way Lisa could birth a baby of this size. Rachel was worried she would split right open.
Rachel ran upstairs and grabbed her phone then pressed some buttons and heard herself rambling incoherently. She wasn’t even sure what she was saying at that point. She was sobbing, hysterical, and hyperventilating. What if Lisa died? “G-get here fast,” she managed, before hanging up on the 911 operator then sinking down in the corner of her bedroom. Rachel held her head and rocked a bit. She knew she should have gone back downstairs. She felt herself crumbling under the pressure, closing off, falling numb to the world.
At some point, the sound of the front door opening downstairs snapped her out of her reverie. Then there was the sound of Mom shrieking. Dad babbling. Lisa moaning.
Everything that followed was a haze, but there was one thing Rachel was certain of. She was never going to use the remote again.

Lisa’s freak pregnancy made the news.
“A high school student in Oaksdale somehow gives birth to a child three months past term. The situation has left medical professionals baffled, especially considering the fact that the same girl had just had a baby a couple of weeks earlier. Some claim the girl might have had the extremely rare condition called superfetation, which allows one mother to carry two children of different gestational ages. Still, the fact that the second baby was able to grow three months past term has left some questioning the validity of this account. Fellow students claim that the girl was not visibly pregnant. And pregnancies that go past forty-two weeks are not only unlikely, but dangerous. With more on this is our correspondent Teresa Krimble…”
Rachel turned the television off.
She had not seen Lisa in a couple of weeks. Recovery had probably taken some time, then there was the matter of…adjusting to everything.
Rachel found herself reflecting on the situation quite often. She would replay that night again and again in her head. She would think about how she lost complete control of her compulsions. It was like an addiction. She had to stop cold turkey. Otherwise someone was going to get hurt. And the consequences would be worse than an unwanted, oversized baby.
Rachel remembered how the number 9 had turned red on the MONTHS setting. Once she had hit 9, there was no going back. Rachel had been unable to decrease the level. At first Rachel hadn’t understood it. After all, they had managed to undo Lisa’s last pregnancy, when she had been on the verge of having multiples. But the more Rachel deliberated on it, the more she realized that the two situations had been slightly different. The last time, the remote had been on the LITTER setting, but the months setting had been less than 9. Even though Lisa had grown huge with multiple children, she had not reached term, and so it had been reversible.
There were just too many things Rachel didn’t know about the remote, and she could not continue to use Lisa as a test dummy. It had been wrong and Rachel was finished. The remote couldn’t be in her custody, it had to be hidden away or destroyed, so that Rachel couldn’t access it.
Which made Rachel’s current dilemma all the more pressing.
The remote had disappeared.
Rachel didn’t blame herself for losing track of it, that night, when Lisa had been wailing and laboring between episodes of losing consciousness. Eric had come downstairs at some point and gawked at the scene in horror, and mom wouldn’t stop screaming. Dad looked absolutely flabbergasted and overwhelmed. It had been pure insanity.
Then there were the ambulances, the medical professionals, nosy neighbors poking their heads around. Lisa’s mother had arrived and fainted. Additionally, there was the complicated task of getting Lisa’s swollen body transported as she heaved and cried, her belly puffing out like a blowfish until they got sedatives into her.
In all the chaos, it would have been a surprise if Rachel had managed to keep track of the remote. She remembered dropping it, and it clattering hard against the floor. She remembered the back popping off. Maybe it was broken. Maybe her dad had picked it up, still thinking it went to the TV downstairs. Maybe one of the paramedics had picked it up, assuming it went with Lisa’s other things. It was on the floor, and broken. It wouldn’t be irrational for someone to think Lisa had dropped it at the start of her labor.
Maybe it was a blessing that it was lost now. Rachel had turned her house upside down searching for it. But it wasn’t here anymore. She didn’t ask her father — she realized she didn’t want to know. Yes, the remote was dangerous. But Rachel didn’t think it would be any safer in her hands than someone else’s. She had been using the remote for her own depraved reasons. Anything was better than that.
It wasn’t Rachel’s. It wasn’t her responsibility anymore. So maybe someone would figure out how the remote worked. Maybe they wouldn’t, and it would be tossed in the trash. Any way it went, that was not Rachel’s problem now.

Lisa was back at school the following Monday.
She looked great, even despite the recent events. She was wearing a sweater dress that showed off her huge breasts and backside, then again, there probably weren’t any outfits that wouldn’t show them off. Rachel found herself staring, a bit dazed to see the other girl again, looking so healthy and beautiful, if rather reticent. Snapping out of her reverie, Rachel threw a little wave as Lisa took her usual spot in the back of chemistry.
Lisa noticed, and offered a weak, uneasy smile. But it was something, and Rachel felt a smidgen of relief. They were still friends.
There weren’t really any opportunities to talk to Lisa at school. They didn’t sit close to each other in any of their classes, and Lisa spent their lunch period sitting with her cheerleader friends, though Lisa no longer wore the uniform nor seemed particularly peppy. She sat at the corner of the table and nibbled her lunch in silence, her eyes down. She didn’t even look up when one of her friends tried to talk to her. She just seemed so…defeated, and it broke Rachel’s heart a little. But Rachel was confident that Lisa would get back to her smug self in no time. She just needed some time. She was dealing with a lot of changes, after all. Two children at only the age of eighteen, in addition to a rather recent and…difficult, childbirth. But everything would be okay. Rachel just knew it would be. Then they could be friends or even something more…or something. Rachel felt herself blushing just at the thought of it. There would be no more remote, no more shenanigans. Just Rachel, and Lisa, and whatever it…turned into.
Rachel’s overwhelming relief at seeing Lisa again brightened the remainder of her day and she felt her anxiety melting away. Everything could go back to normal. Everything could be great.
After the final bell rang, Rachel went to her locker, and started putting away the books she wouldn’t need that night. She slung her backpack over her shoulder when she felt an unusual sensation over her body, a kind of tingling in her skin that wasn’t entirely unpleasant. Rachel looked at her hands, and was astonished to see that they were green. Actually green, not tinged, not a hint, but a rich green color that was reminiscent of zombies or aliens or something. Her jaw falling, she heard someone yelp beside her. She turned to see two classmates standing there, gawking.
“What the hell Rachel, are you okay?” Peter Brooks said. “Are you wearing body paint or something?” His look of shock faded to be replaced by an amused smile. More people started to notice the change, and took to pointing at her, others giggling.
Across the hallway, staring at something in her hand — her phone? — was Lisa. She was pressing buttons, frowning, and then, to Rachel’s horror, Lisa looked up and took notice of her. Lisa saw Rachel’s green skin and Lisa’s eyes positively bulged.
It was only then that Rachel could properly make out the thing that Lisa was clutching in her right hand. It was a little scuffed up, with some duct taped covering the back of it. But there was no denying what Lisa was tinkering with. The remote.
-
Rachel had a visitor after school.
Though reluctant to come out of her bedroom, she eventually went downstairs in a scarf and gloves with copious amounts of her mother’s concealer splotched over her face. If anything, it probably just exacerbated Rachel’s odd appearance. Thankfully her parents were still at work, and weren’t there to witness the green tinge that still showed through the excessive makeup, but Eric was giving amused looks between sniggers.
Her visitor, who Eric had insisted that she come greet, was none other than Lisa, her arms crossed beneath her huge breasts, the taped up remote gripped tightly in one of her hands. She looked furious.
Rachel could feel his face draining of color…except for the green. The green stayed put. “Eric, can you give us a moment?”
But Eric lingered, spectating nosily. Rachel had to pull off her boot and start swinging for him to back off and take retreat. Rachel uneasily turned back to Lisa. “Come in,” she invited.
Lisa stepped inside, crowding her. “What the fuck, Rachel. Look at you! And this th-thhing — tell me this isn’t what I think it is. Tell me this fucking remote didn’t just turn your skin green!?” Lisa said, her expression fluctuating between astonishment and disbelief as she tried to puzzle together what the hell was going on.
Rachel opened her mouth but could find no words. On the contrary, her throat felt as though it was narrowing and her recent bout of misbehavior was about to be exposed.
