"That coffee addiction is going to bite you in the ass one of these days," said Alex as she peeled her math textbook off the kitchen counter. The cover was sticky with syrup. She tried her best to wipe it off on the thigh of her jeans.
Violet didn't bother to lift her attention from her coffee mug. She was enjoying it at the small kitchen table of their shared apartment. Violet always made her coffee hot and black, with no additions to adulterate the bitter taste of caffeine. "I'll consider that when the semester ends," Violet lied before taking another sip.
Alex just snorted as she grabbed her keys. "See you in math." It was the one class they shared and would take place later that afternoon. Though Alex and Violet had different college majors, Math 137 was a prerequisite for both.
"I should get going myself." Violet finished her coffee and stood. Alex discreetly watched her.
Violet was an avid soccer player, and though she ordinarily had a slim physique, lately there was the slightest of curves in her shirts, indicative of some recent belly growth. She had put on weight.
Violet scratched the curve as she slung her backpack over her shoulder. The two walked out into the hallway.
"You taking your bike?" asked Alex. Violet's motorcycle had only just gotten out of the shop.
"Of course," said Violet.
"That thing's a death trap."
"Don't knock it until you try it."
"When hell freezes over." Alex threw another glance at the curve.
The two parted ways by the building's garage and Alex started her usual half-hour walk to campus. She could have afforded a car by then. Actually, Alex could have afforded a lot of things at that point in time.
Alex was receiving regular payments. An envelope stuffed with five grand could be found in her gym locker at the beginning of every month. All she had to do was continue to surveil Violet and forward the recordings to her benefactor.
There were hidden cameras all over the apartment and in Violet's bedroom. They recorded every moment of Violet’s home life. In addition to surveilling her, Alex was responsible for dosing Violet with a drug and ensure that she consumed it every day. It had been too easy. Alex had simply grinded the pills into a powder then mixed it with Violet's coffee grounds. Considering Violet's coffee addiction, she was getting plenty of the drug daily.
It had been a couple of months, and Alex honestly hadn't been expecting much, but it looked like the drug was finally taking effect. It made Alex a little nervous, a little excited.
-
Violet wasn't concerned about the weight gain.
She had a naturally fast metabolism and extra weight usually just fell off once she picked things up at the gym or track. She tried to keep active.
What concerned Violet was the notable swelling and darkening of her belly button. It was sensitive and appeared as though it had gotten infected somehow. It looked awkward, her normally inward belly button now bulging outward somewhat. She considered seeing a doctor, but she hated going in almost as much as she despised taking medicine. She knew she was generally strong and healthy. She rarely got sick and had no underlying medical conditions. Violet suspected that if she just waited it out, her body would fight the infection on its own.
And so she waited.
-
Alex swung by the college's athletics department one afternoon to drop off Violet's wallet. Violet had forgotten it that morning on her way out of the apartment.
"Thanks so much," said Violet as she accepted it in the locker room. Her belly was bulging against her soccer jersey and it was definitely getting rounder. Violet absently rubbed the mound, not seeming to notice what she was doing. Alex eyed the protrusion in the middle, where Violet's belly button was now sticking outward. It looked like the drug was really taking effect. Alex was rather bemused.
"Sure thing," said Alex belatedly. She forced her gaze back up to Violet's face.
"Violet can I have a word with you?" said a stern voice behind them.
Both girls turned to see coach Shields standing with a frown on her face, her arms crossed at her chest.
Violet gave Alex a grin. "See you later," she said as she walked off to join the coach behind some lockers.
But Alex couldn't help lingering; eavesdropping, really. She tried to blend in with all the athletes and tinkered with the dial on a random locker, as though she was having trouble getting it open.
"I wanted to speak to you about your weight," said Shields’ too-loud voice. She was a direct woman and got straight to the point.
Violet sounded embarrassed, "It's under control, coach."
"Yeah? Because it doesn't look under control," said Shields emphatically. "It looks the opposite. You’re starting to look pregnant."
“Had my period last Thursday,” Violet quickly piped in, her face flaming. "I'm gonna go completely keto and step it up at the gym. I’ll be back in shape in two weeks, tops."
Shields huffed. "I hope you're being serious. I have twenty other sophomores who would kill for your spot. And they're not bad, Vye. Could probably give you a run for your money."
"I am serious, coach," said Violet firmly.
Shields gave another sigh. As Alex heard the coach’s heavy footfalls she quietly departed before she could be caught.
She had never considered how the nature of the experiment could impact Violet on a personal and academic level, and it was certainly...interesting.

Something really weird was going on with her stomach.
Violet wasn't eating or drinking any more than usual—honestly, she had cut back—yet the weight was continuing to pile on, steadily increasing without pause.
And all the weight was going directly to Violet's gut. Her abdomen was getting rounder like a heavy drinkers’, not really sagging, yet maintaining a softness to it.
Her belly button was just starting to look bizarre. It was swollen and pink, really sticking out. It was developing a circular rash around it, and the whole area was so sensitive, she barely tried to touch it. It looked like the infection was getting worse. She really should have sought medical attention but she was sort of nervous and sort of embarrassed. She wasn't in pain. She didn't feel sick in any way. So Violet continued to put it off.
Shields finally benched her. Rather than getting the weight off as Violet had promised, she had only managed to put more on. It was humiliating. Her teammates gave awkward and commiserating looks. Violet had gone from being one of the star players to being a bench-warmer.
If she didn't get it together, she was at risk of being cut from the team entirely. Violet had never felt so overwhelmed, and found herself spending more time trying to diminish the curve with baggier clothes and layers than working out at the gym. If anything, her appetite was growing, and her strict diet failed regularly in the form of eating binges.
Her family had been pestering her for months to visit and Violet knew she couldn't keep putting it off. Her mother was bound to do something drastic. And so, Violet wrapped her body in a couple of loose sweaters, filled a duffle bag for the weekend, and rode out of the city to the quaint neighborhood where she had grown up.
For her mother, all it took was an embrace, then a once over, her gaze shooting down to Violet’s stomach. Thankfully, Violet’s bulging belly button wasn't visible through the thick material draped over it, but her mother saw the generalized gain. "Violet, you put on weight," she said, eyebrows rising high then furrowing. "I always thought you were too thin, but this is a bit much. Wait…you’re not pregnant, are you?"
Violet's cheeks grew hot. “No, mom! Of course not!”
"Don't tell me Vye-Vye’s porking up," Chris's voice called as he appeared behind their mother's shoulder. "Woah," he said as she took in the curve under Violet's sweater, the layers evidently doing little to hide it. "Booze-binging?"
"Shut up, Chris," Violet grumbled. "And no, I haven't been drinking," she added quickly to their mother. Violet allowed herself to be ushered inside.
"Damn, Violet," her sister said in passing, hardly looking up from her phone.
"Shut it, Lane."
"Violet, don't talk to your sister like that.”
Violet followed her mother into the kitchen where her mother went to stir a pot on the stove. "Sit. Relax. Tell me how school's going? How's soccer?"
"Great," Violet lied, forcing a smile. She was just grateful her mom didn't look up from the pot.
"Are you sure? This isn't like you, Vye. You're usually so disciplined."
"Yeah, well, midterms," said Violet, digging for an explanation. "But I'm already back at the gym. This is nothing. But embarrassing," she grumbled.
Her mother threw her an amused smile and the tension dissolved fast.
"Where's dad?" said Violet uneasily.
"He got called in for an emergency consult but he should be home any minute."
"Great," Violet huffed unenthusiastically. Her father was a physician and rather preachy when it came to personal health.
"You know your dad cares about you. He just wants all his kids to be healthy."
Violet rolled her eyes as she thought back to how their father had reacted when Lane was diagnosed with mono in the 9th grade. "Do you think there'll be a lecture?"
"You know your father."
"I know this is going to be painfully awkward," Violet muttered under her breath as she folded her arms over her bloated midsection.
-
The whole visit turned out being hellish, but it wasn't as though she had expected anything less. Her family had a way of being insufferable at any and all times.
Violet silently rejoiced when her weekend spent enduring fat jokes from her siblings, disturbed looks from her father, and a general air of concern from her mother, finally came to an end.
The ride back to campus against the brisk air was rejuvenating, though Violet found herself grimacing at times from the odd and new sensation of her belly quavering with the movements of her bike.
Her motorcycle jacket helped a little. The leather was decidedly tighter now at her abdomen, and helped to keep her stomach from jiggling too drastically.
Still, there was a lot of friction going on. The weirdly erogenous sensation of her sensitive belly button left her breathless. Violet was weak in the knees by the time she made it back to her apartment.
She threw a hasty greeting to Alex ("hey girl"), before heading straight to her bedroom and spending some intimate time with her vibrator.
-
Alex watched Violet's ongoing developments in morbid fascination.
It seemed out of nowhere Violet suddenly had a serious bump. If she were pregnant, she could have passed as five months along. Her bulging belly button showed prominently, especially when Violet was at home in just a t-shirt rather than the jackets and sweaters she wore around campus.
Violet would rub her abdomen without really noticing. She would rub her hands into the sides of the mound, making Alex wonder if it was tender. Sore? Maybe it just felt good to be rubbed. And if so...how good?
Violet's hands seemed to specifically avoid her navel. She was dressed in a tank top that day, the material hugging into the plump curve. Violet was flustered, as she often seemed to be lately. She was breathing a little faster than her norm, her cheeks a little pinker, and she was sweating just a bit at her temples. She looked like she was overheated even though the weather was still cool and crisp as the winter ebbed slowly.
That evening, Alex couldn't resist touching Violet. She wanted to feel the realness of what the drug was doing to her. Alex did it casually but the contact wasn't missed.
"Look at what we have here," Alex joked as she lightly patted Violet's bump.
Violet's face went bright red and her body actually shuddered. She huffed out a breath and backed away, her hands curling under the mound. "Don't do that," she said breathlessly, looking entirely overwhelmed.
"I um...sorry," said Alex. She couldn’t help staring.
"Yeah," said Violet awkwardly, because that's what this was. Painfully awkward. "I should...I should study." With that she turned into her room, closing the door, and leaving Alex to her thoughts.
