Though Wilson had made a return, he no longer appeared to be a full-time guardian to Zach. Wilson would only come by once or twice a week now, and often he seemed preoccupied. A slow transition occurred as Valerie established herself as a leading authority within the dwelling.
Though admittedly, she felt like less of an authority than an ally. She was even quite friendly with Zach. It was odd to even consider it, but Zach was beginning to favor her presence over Wilson's.
"We want to administer a treatment to help aid in your nutrient absorption," Valerie told him in the exam room one evening. Across the room, Dr. Carter was prepping a tray of medical equipment. "Nonsurgical. Entirely safe. First we'll give you a mild sedative. We thought we'd do this at night since you'll likely just fall asleep. Won't feel a thing."
Zach nodded. He wasn't surprised that the treatment was necessary. He glanced at the unnaturally rounded state of his belly. "Will it also help with digestion?"
Valerie smiled. "We'll see."
Zach took the pill she offered over, and it wasn't long before he was nodding off against the medical bed. The last thing he remembered seeing was Carter hoovering over him as Valerie pulled on a pair of latex gloves, and then there was darkness.
-
When Zach awoke, it was morning time. He was tucked under some blankets and had managed to sleep all night in the exam room.
He still was not sure what specifically the treatment had entailed, but he felt fine except for a soreness in his gut he only noticed when he moved. Valerie strolled in from one of the offices adjoined to the room and beamed in that way he was getting accustomed to.
"Everything went swimmingly, Zach. You may have some discomfort for a day or two. How do you feel now?"
"Hungry," Zach admitted. He had few other complaints but the hunger was strong; stirring. His belly clenched oddly.
Valerie's grin broadened. "Why don't you get yourself some breakfast?"
The concept of breakfast was an odd one. Zach had started off eating only every several days, but now seemed to be indulging often and arbitrarily, and no one would tell him whether or not it was normal.
He gingerly lowered himself from the bed. He was still in the hospital gown he had been wearing the night before, the material tenting out at his midsection. The fabric felt crisp and unpleasant on his sensitive skin. He doffed it, not minding the way his rounded belly was left on display. It looked rather amusing on his slim body. It was big. And he was going to fill it more.
Valerie checked his temperature then let him go. Zach slid off to his bedroom. It didn't take him long to spot one of the mice happily infesting his living space. This one was fat and pregnant. He sucked it down.
-
In the days that followed, Zach felt strangely mellow. He was filled with a sense of contentedness that was perhaps inherent to people who were plump, lazy, and lacking in worldly tribulations that didn't involve eating, napping, or other leisurely activities.
He felt warm as well, his insides radiating heat, his skin often flushed pink when he wasn't sprawled somewhere completely still. His everyday exertions of getting up and slithering around left him a little breathless.
Yet he felt strangely good, to be curled up, around his full belly, or to idly scratch it where it perched on his lap. It was always full. He was always feeding. When Wilson was around, the scientist would throw odd, or concerned looks Zach’s way, but he never said anything much. Valerie was as encouraging as ever.
"I want you to have more freedoms, but also more responsibility," she told him one day while they were playing video games. She was surprisingly good at it and defeated him three times in a row. Zach began to suspect that she had more experience gaming than she let on. "I thought we'd start with chores."
"Chores," Zach echoed. It sounded so mundane, so normal. He liked the sound of it. "Okay.”
He did appreciate the freedoms. Wilson would have never let Zach outside in the yard, let alone by himself. Now there was even talk of Zach getting to leave the compound, whatever that would look like. The concept was simultaneously daunting and exciting, and it was a preoccupation that was steadily escalating to a thrilling anxiety.
His belly nudged into the counter when he washed dishes. He found it amusing, how round he was now. How heavily his large meals sat on his body as his insides strained to digest.
Zach was becoming a pro at feeding. He was more confident and adventurous. He went to the hen house one afternoon to get some fresh eggs, when a strong compulsion overcame him. Rather than going for the eggs, he grabbed up a plump hen, and found himself stretching his jaw wider than he ever had before as he stuffed the whole squawking animal into his mouth, and he swore, he almost choked. His throat strained and ached as spontaneous tears rolled down his cheeks, throat working as he struggled to get the thing through. He soon found himself on the ground, rolling and twitching.
Then he was gasping for breath, and the hen was arduously being pushed through his body. As it began to shift into his stomach, his abdomen stretched in a pleasant sensation, pushing out as he arched and reddened, groaning out as he felt himself being filled, belly shuddering and swelling right there where he was sprawled in the grass.
There was a popping sensation that caused him to gasp, his hands immediately going to his navel, ghosting over it where they found the change. His belly button was now protruding outward. Zach panted and moaned.
-
Maybe he was overdoing it, but then, there were no parameters, no standards, nothing to compare himself to in terms of feeding and growth.
God, his torso was beginning to look like a pregnant woman's. Like he was due with child. He was just so round, and still pigging out.
Sometimes his hands unconsciously reached down to cradle the mound. It was so heavy, and had so much dimension. His torso had been concave only a few weeks earlier. It was stunning to think about how much he had changed with his new method of eating.
Valerie would giggle at him arbitrarily and without explanation. Perhaps it was when she caught him touching his stomach. He was beginning to feel self-conscious and starting to dislike her all over again. She grinned at his distended midsection and bulging navel, and had Zach had any ground to stand on, maybe he would have started a fight about it.
Besides, she had never been anything close to professional. Why would he suddenly expect it from her now? Valerie was a bit of a joke. Zach saw the way the other scientists looked at her—as though she was the one with a half-snake body. Valerie was an oddity all on her own.
In his confined world, Zach easily found distractions from his distractions. Minor things. Like the mouse infestation, which was steadily growing. The rodents would scuttle about with few reservations, and at all hours of the day. More often than not, Zach sighted pregnant ones. It was like a challenge, and he was helpless but to indulge frequently, filling himself more. His tail was still steadily getting longer, trailing behind him as he slithered around.
Zach paused one morning as he was sitting up in bed. He grimaced through a weird clench of sensation in his gut.
He'd been having odd feelings of indigestion lately, though it wasn't really surprising, given the girth and congestion. He hummed as he felt a squirming sensation inside of him. Slowly, the feeling mitigated. Zach sighed and looked down to notice his hands cupping either side of his belly.
He noticed something else as well. Zach furrowed his brows and got up, shifting slowly to the mirror. He covered a yawn as he eyed his reflection, then lowered his hand, a little perplexed by his newest changes.
His nipples were darker, now a deep pink. Not only were they darker, but larger as well, swollen, distended, bigger in general. And the areola seemed broader, a little puffier. It was just odd. Zach touched it curiously, and was surprised by the sensitivity, his face heating, and his arm jerking away.
Weird, was all he could really think as he continued to scrutinize himself in the mirror. It wasn't too noticeable if someone wasn't paying attention, he supposed. Maybe it was just a phase his unusual body was going through, or some side-effect of the weight gain. He would wait to see if the scientists noticed or expressed concern during his next physical exam.
There was more lurching. Zach absently rubbed his stomach as he slid off and started the process of getting cleaned up.
-
His chest was changing.
In only another few days, Zach could see and feel that his chest had gotten softer, a gentle curve beneath each nipple, like the beginnings of breasts. It was weird and embarrassing, and made him uncharacteristically want to cover up.
But at the same time, the sensation of them interested him, and he wasn't afraid of exploring it anymore.
It made him shiver, his tail twisting as he relished in the unique pleasure of gliding his fingers over his swollen nipples. It was almost strange to feel anything sexual in the absence of his human sex organs. He had hardly even registered how he had transitioned into an asexual being, at least by human terms. So while Zach should have been bothered by the development of his chest, he found himself weirdly protective of the delicate feeling. He enjoyed his new form of pleasure. It felt like a secret that he couldn't give up. He found himself starting to wear shirts again, though it was scarce that the material could pull down past his navel, and he'd stare at the small tops in wonder that they had ever fit him at all.
His belly was still growing with every meal. It was getting tenser and tighter, his breathing thinning and face flushed. As smooth and sinuously as he could glide upon his tail, he found his movements becoming heavier and awkward, until the day came that he felt as though he just couldn't fit anything else in his belly, even despite the hunger. And yet he couldn't stop eating. He filled himself more. He wondered what was happening to him as he sat, fidgeted, and tugged at his shirt which felt tight all over. His abdomen was tight all over.
That afternoon, Zach had an exam. Cool hands on his chest pudge made him shudder embarrassingly. He reddened and it was clear that everyone knew his secret. The gloved hands withdrew and Zach was allowed to pull down his shirt.
Valerie hummed. She was acting particularly smug that day as she pressed her stethoscope against his belly and the constant churning within. "Everything's going well," she assured, but there was no way that could be true. He gave her a helpless look.
"I can't stop eating," Zach disclosed, as he rubbed his mound, even conscious of the motions, and conscious of how Valerie and the two other scientists present saw. "I don't think my digestive system is working properly. My stomach doesn't go down like it used to. Can't you do something?" he said breathlessly, wiping some sweat off his brow.
"Not yet. But soon," Valerie assured, helping him off the medical bed. The exam was over.
"Am I dying?" Zach blurted.
"What? Of course not. You're perfect."
Zach was dubious of the claim, but at least felt a little better by the rare look of sincerity in Valerie's eyes.
"Right. Okay," he muttered as he allowed himself to be ushered to the door, feeling more like a slug in his movements than a snake these days.
"Everything will be fine, Zach, I promise."
Behind Valerie's shoulder, Dr. Shaw didn't look too sure. She was staring at him, as she often did now since he had gotten fat. Her eyes flickered to his chest then back down to his gut, before she shifted her attention to the chart in her hands and scribbled something down.
