The mouse infestation was worsening.
Wilson seemed reluctant to actually do anything about it. The problem with calling an exterminator was letting someone inside the covert property. Additionally, they didnt want to risk exposing Tori to toxic chemicals. Her new body was fragile, and they didnt know how pesticides could affect her. Tori didnt much care either way.
She was just hungry.
The sensation had appeared out of nowhere, but it occupied her constantly, and she could hardly focus. She would stare at her books but not read them, or sometimes become entranced by the caged birds, which had been moved to the living room. Even when she didnt see them, she could hear the chirping constantly.
One day, Tori even indulged her curiosity by opening the cage and reaching inside. She pet one, offered her hand. It easily perched on her finger, so domestic and trusting. She brought it close to her face. Allowed the feathers to brush her lips. So incredibly soft, perhaps the softest thing she had ever felt. Tori felt her eyes drift closed.
Tori. Wilsons voice startled her from her reverie. Are you warming up to the canaries?
Yep, said Tori awkwardly. She returned the bird to the cage and abruptly left.
-
Maybe Ill have eggs, Tori thought the following morning. She often found herself thinking about them and wondered if they might sit better than the other foods she tried to eat.
She slithered over to the basket and lifted one of the raw hen eggs into her hand. She was deliberating over whether she should scramble or boil it, when she found herself bringing the egg up to her face, and taking a gentle sniff. She allowed it to touch her lips. She tasted the shell with her tongue.
Then suddenly the egg was being sucked into her mouth and she took a huge gulp before she could even control herself. She felt her throat stretching uncomfortably, somehow accommodating the egg as it slid steadily down. Tori stood in shock as she tried to register what had just happened.
Shed swallowed an egg whole.
Tori sat down in her room and contemplated this new development. Her stomach felt good. Fuller but not quite sated. She had none of the pain or discomfort she thought a person should experience of they swallowed a large egg, shell and all. Instead she felt entirely comfortableprobably moreso than before. The egg had been appetizing, and she decidedly wanted more. Hunger overwhelmed her.
Before she could think things through, Tori got up and slithered back to the kitchen, headed straight for the basket of eggs.
She lifted one, stared uneasily at it for a moment, then promptly stuffed it into her mouth. She closed her eyes as she swallowed, this time sort of enjoying the way it stretched her throat and dragged its way down with a rolling, pleasing tension. Mmmm she hummed, dipping her fingers into the basket and eating one after the next.
She went through the whole thing. It had to have been a dozen eggs, but she gulped them all down without pause. Once she was finished, she was stunned by how much she had been able to eat. She was finally sated, but beyond that. Stuffed. Tight. She groaned.
Tori slid her hands to her stomach, and she was startled to find a bulge there. She looked down at herself. Her usually concave stomach was now bulging outward in a small gut. Bizarre, she thought. A normal person probably would not have been able to stuff down all those eggs. They would have choked or vomited the food up. Instead Tori had easily gotten it down, and now it sat so completely in her stomach that her abdomen was bulging outward, stretching to accommodate it.
Absolutely bizarre.
Tori felt tired. She dragged herself back to her room and lowered herself gingerly onto the bed.
She would have to speak to Wilson about this.
But for now, she just needed rest.
Tori stretched herself out on the bed, closed her eyes, and fell asleep immediately.

When Tori awoke late in the afternoon, she was surprised by how long she had managed to sleep. She almost thought that her egg-binge had been a dream, but then she saw the way her stomach was still bloatednot in a substantial way, but enough that it was clearly evident on her thin frame. Rather than feeling hard and tight, her abdomen was softer, more comfortable now. It gurgled. She was digesting. It was funny, weird, and a little unsettling.
She was even more of a snake than before.
You slept all afternoon, said Wilson when Tori joined him for dinner that evening. Are you feeling alright?
Yes, the Tori. She hesitated and then told Wilson about the incident with the eggs. What Tori had done to them. She didnt know why she still felt so embarrassed about it. It wasnt as though it was something shed had control of. It was just another part of what had been done to her. When she was finished, she felt rather flustered under Wilsons inquisitive gaze.
So my theory holds, said Wilson, finally. Your digestive system has been altered to the extent that you can no longer digest food the way us humans do.
The way Wilson said us humans, was rather startling. Tori wasnt sure quite when, but at some point she had become something else entirely. She was inhuman now.
Im glad you were finally able to eat, Tori. The others will be pleased as well. I will have more eggs ordered in. You might also consider trying to consume
IIm still just trying to process this whole thing. It its a lot.
Wilson gave a nod. Eggs then.
Eggs, Tori agreed. It seemed a safe place to start. She looked down at the unappealing chicken pie on her plate with mashed potatoes and chopped vegetables. Even the aroma disgusted Tori a little. I think Ill head back to my room.
Rest well, said Wilson.
Tori left.
She didnt rest.
She lay on her bed in the dark, by then conscious of how much easier it was to see in the night these days, how shadows had developed into figures that were easily distinguishable. She watched the mice scuttle about. Their population was only growing in that wing of the house. They were breeding. Toris tongue dipped out and dragged over her dry bottom lip. Finally, she closed her eyes.
-
Tori ate a mouse.
It was the following afternoon, just when her hunger was beginning to niggle, and a small mouse had the audacity to scamper right across her desk. It was atypical for a house pest to be out and about in broad daylight, readily visible. It wasnt a pest behavior, more domesticated, more pet-like. But Tori was hardly minding as her hand darted out, beyond her control, as she grabbed up the mouse, clutching the warm, fleshy body in her hand. And before she could stop herself, she was stuffing the thing right into her mouth. Her eyes went wide, and she began to panic, but rather than spitting it out, she just swallowed against it.
It was soft. Wriggly. It was alive, and it was going down her throat, as her neck pumped and contracted, forcing the thing deeper inside her, and when it hit her stomach, Tori felt baffled by what she had done. It had been an uncontrollable compulsion. Instinct. Tori held her head in her hands, feeling troubled.
Yet there was no guilt. It had been good. Satisfying. Pleasant. The heat of the creature, the sensation of it still moving. The pressure of the thing, still whole, where it sat in her stomach. Tori looked down at her abdomen to see it bulging, just slightly, again.
There were two knocks on the doorframe. Everything alright? said Wilson, as he peeked into the room. The door had been left ajar so Tori couldnt fault him.
Yes, said Tori quickly. She folded her arms over her waist, feeling abashed for some reason.
Wilson studied her for a moment. Alright, Tori. Can I interest you in a scrabble game later? At five?
Yes, Tori repeated distractedly.
Great, said Wilson. At five then. He walked off.
Tori stared absently at the spot where Wilson had been.
Her hunger had awoken and now it was stirring relentlessly. She was still hungry. She wanted more. And on top of that, she longed to experiment, to explore her new tastes and method of eating. She wanted more ways to sate her yearning body.
Tori went to the living room. As expected, there was no sign of Wilson, as the man had walked off in the direction of his office. Tori slid straight to the bird cage. She opened it slowly. She decided that there was no point in continuing to put up airs. Both she and Wilson knew what it was for. So Tori reached inside to gather a bird, which remained so content and trusting as it was clutched in Toris hand. She stroked it gently with her thumb, before bringing it to her face. Tori opened her mouth wide.
-
Her belly was bulging even more than before. The birds had been small, but they had been entirely whole when theyd hit her stomach. It made sense that she was bloated from eating them all.
It was sort of embarrassing that her body showed blatant evidence of her recent meal, but the sensation was quite pleasing, to be honest. It felt good. Right, to be full.
Tori felt relaxed but focused during her scrabble game with Wilson. She tried to fill the board with esoteric words to stump the math-minded scientist. Tori had just found the perfect place to spell out the word ABSCOND and earn herself a triple-word score, when an itch in the back of her throat left her pausing to clear it. But the itch didnt go away, it just worsened, leaving her coughing and reaching for her water bottle. It felt like she had something stuck there, and she leaned down, hacking and choking slightly.
Are you alright, Tori? Wilson said, but Tori didnt respond, she just focused on clearing her throat.
Something was coming up. She knew she shouldnt have eaten those birds whole. There was no way she could digest it. Never mind the fact that it was, beyond rawlikely gave her food poisoning. She had been stupid and now she was retching. Oh god, was all she could think right before she regurgitated a clump of yellow.
Feathers
White fur.
And little pieces of animal bone.
Tori wrinkled her nose at the disgusting mound sitting right there on the scrabble board. She slowly looked up at Wilson who had a blank look on his face.
So you really did eat the canaries, Wilson mused aloud. And a small mouse? Based on that cervical vertebrae? Odd that you couldnt digest the bones
God, was all Tori could say, completely mortified. II didnt mean to
Tori, its alright, said Wilson hurriedly. Its more than alright. You ate. You did what you had to. What we needed you to do. Its nothing to be embarrassed about. Its just how you consume food now.
Tori nodded weakly.
Do you feel better at least? Sated?
Um said Tori, feeling flushed, and still rather queasy about the lump of bone and feather sitting there that had come right up her throat. I think. I mean, I I could probably still
Do you know that snakes prefer large prey? Wilson said as Tori trailed off. They can eat things several times their diameter. They dont eat oftenperhaps only weekly or so. Its why they prefer large meals. They store the food in their stomachs as they slowly digest it.
Again, Tori managed a nod.
So I encourage you to feed. And feed well, Tori, said Wilson. He stood and nonchalantly picked up the board game, with the clump of regurgitated feather and bone. Tori wasnt sure what he planned to do with it. Trash it? Study it? Tori didnt ask as Wilson walked towards the door with it. Nothing to be ashamed of. Shall we resume our game later?
Yeah said Tori.
Excellent, Tori. I dont expect you at dinner, but perhaps well have a chat tomorrow, after youve digested, some.
Er right. Tori felt her face heat more and she watched Wilson leave the room.
