Seated in the kitchen, Lucas watched his mother get off the phone with the school, then Lucas recoiled as his mother rounded on him.
Are you out of your mind!? Cona snapped. She folded her arms beneath her upper breasts, heaving them higher. Tell me what your principal just told me isnt true, Lucas!
Lucas frowned and looked down. It wasnt right, mom. The way they were treating the cows
Cona sighed and sat down beside Lucas. Lucas felt his mothers fingers run through his hair.
I know, Cona said. But do you really think theres anything we can do about it? The entire world eats beef. Livestock is treated like trash. Theres nothing that can be done.
Lucas refused to accept that. He stood and stormed off to his room where he dropped himself onto his bed and glared up at the ceiling.
He was still tingling all over. Maybe those chemicals he had inhaled hadnt worn off yet. Absently rubbing his chest, Lucas drifted off to sleep.
-
More, please?
Lucas, you already had two servings.
Lucas flushed and lowered his plate. Right. Sorry, he said tensely.
Cona was looking at him in concern.
It was a few weeks later, and Lucass appetite had increased substantially. He was usually quite good at sticking to his restrictive diet, but recently he found that he couldnt help indulging with more and more food.
At school during lunch hour, Lucas piled his tray, and always went back for extra, quickly burning through his allowance to stuff his face. And even after all that, when he sat down to his seventh period English class, he could barely focus on what the teacher was saying above the volume of his grumbling stomach.
And his gluttony was starting to show on his frame. His chest had gotten somewhat puffy, his four nipples much more sensitive than usual. It wasnt significant by any means, but he couldnt risk them becoming noticeable, and people realizing him to be the anomaly he wasa half-human half-cow science experiment.
Lucas decided to ease up on the over-eating.
One day, he stuck entirely to his diet, and it was hard. His stomach would not stop gurgling for sustenance. That night in bed, he tossed and turned, his stomach aching in hunger. Lucas sat up and considered sneaking down to the kitchen for a snack, but one of his brothers rooms was right next door. He would be caught for sure.
Lucas got up and paced his room, knowing that he would never be able to sleep through his insatiable appetite. His eyes drifted to his bedroom window. Lucas unlatched it, and pulled it open.
It was a short walk to the 24-hour deli two blocks from his house. Lucas grabbed a basket and filled it with chips, cookie packages, snack cakes, chocolate bars, muffins, bagels, and whatever else he could cram in, before bringing it to the counter and handing over two twenties for all of it. He was quickly blowing through his savings.
With his two bags full of junk snacks held securely in his arms, Lucas headed back home, but elected not to go inside just yet. Instead he crept behind some of the bushes on the side of his house, lowered himself down to the grass, and began to dig into the snacks.
He pushed chips and pretzels into his mouth, cheeks puffing out as he packed it in faster than he could swallow.
Next, he gulped down whole cream-filled snack cakes, one after the next. He nearly choked on one.
The bagels were next Lucas tore into them greedily and then the muffins. Moist with oil and absolutely decadent.
Lucas stuffed his face until his stomach felt uncomfortably tight. Groaning, Lucas held it. His stomach was usually completely flat, but it was beginning to get a bit full, no doubt because of all the extra eating. He didnt know what had come over him lately.
Discarding the evidence of his junk-food binge in the outdoor trash can, Lucas scrambled back through his bedroom window, and collapsed to his bed.

Soon pressed for cash, Lucas got a part-time job at the local bakery. He suspected he knew why he gravitated towards that particular position. Lucas spent a few hours there every day after school, icing cakes and pumping custard into pastries. He could barely help salivating over the baked goods, but managed to maintain professionalism, and didnt touch a thing.
At the end of most days, his boss usually gave Lucas the leftover pastries anyway. Lucas often left with a bag full of them. His employer thought he was bringing them for his family, but he was really keeping them for himself. Just as he did with his late-night junk binges, Lucas would hide in his bushes and stuff each pastry down his throat, before nonchalantly joining his family for dinner, a bit of icing on his cheeks.
Lucass pants were getting tight.
One evening he surveyed himself naked in his bedroom mirror.
His penis had only gotten smaller in recent weeks, and his testicles had all but disappeared. It was disturbing and terrifying, and he tried not to think too much about it, because when he did, it became hard to get enough air into his lungs. Did his being intersex mean he was infertile? Did that even matter? It wasnt as though he wanted childrenat least he didnt think he did.
He tried to process his thoughts about his changing genitalia. Though he was unnerved by the continued shrinkage, it didnt change his life in a consequential way. His genitalia had always been small and had never offered much in terms of sensation. The changing appearance only added to his feelings of oddness and insecurity, though he had to admit that it didnt change much about his life, practically speaking.
His gaze shifted to the pink skin on his hairless pubic region, which seemed to solidify his gender-ambivalent status. He was supposed to be a bull like his brothers. Instead, he had an udder. A partially-developed udder, he corrected. Which didnt mean much. It was barely existent, just another idiosyncrasy about him.
Yet Lucas couldnt help staring at it, and wondering.
Was it him, or did the it look fuller than before? He tilted his head and frowned.
And it almost seemed a bit bloated. He lightly touched it, and shivered. It had gotten sensitive as well. Oh god, Lucas whispered to himself. He really needed to get his weight under control before things got out of hand. He zipped up his pants with some difficulty.
At dinner that night, Lucas ate his small serving, and couldnt help gazing at the heaping portions on each of his brothers plates, his stomach growling and mouth watering. Lucas turned his gaze to his mother. Mom, can I have more?
Cona frowned. Lucas- she began in a scolding tone, but Webber interrupted.
Cona? A word in the kitchen? Webber stood.
Lucass father had returned from a lengthy business trip that evening. Lucas watched his mother hesitate, then stand, heaving her heavy body up from her seat. With that, she followed Webber into the kitchen. Lucas frowned down at his empty plate.
-
What is it? said Cona. I dont see why you interrupted.
At the rate youre going, hell have low self-esteem, Webber responded. He leaned against the counter.
Hes starting to put on weight. Im just worried, thats all.
Hes maturing, Cona, said Webber. Lucas is part-cow. Its natural for him to be a little on the heavier side. And you know he has no control over his appetite. None of them do.
Cona sighed. I just dont want things to get out of control. Cona gazed down at her own swollen form.
Webber placed his hand on her shoulder. I know you want whats best for him. But what happens happens. You hear the way his stomach growls all day. We need to encourage him to listen to his body.
Cona shook her head at him. She reluctantly smiled. Why are you always right?
Webber and Cona returned to the dining room, and it was with some strain that Cona suggested Lucas have seconds. After Lucas gobbled that down, Cona even managed to suggest thirds, all while wearing her strained, but encouraging, smile.
Lucas hesitated, and accepted.

Lucas struggled with a pair of pants for nearly an hour one afternoon. Just as he managed to get the zipper up, the pants tore, and he stared down at himself in disbelief.
Everything was changing. His chest had continued to soften, developing four slight but distinct mounds. Breasts. He had resorted to wearing looser tops to keep them concealed. His stomach had gotten fuller beneath them. And his udder had bloated up more, to his considerable unease. He worried that it was starting to develop, like a real cows, but told himself it was just a bit of weight gain.
Lucas had plans to meet up with a classmate to study that evening, but he couldnt bring himself to go looking the way he did.
He had been meeting with Ralph a few times a week for the past month. Ralph was extremely awkward, but in a way that Lucas found to be oddly pleasant. He enjoyed their study sessions together, even if they were just poring over school work and discussing equations.
Though Lucass changes were barely visible under his loose clothes, he felt oddly self-conscious about the thought of Ralph seeing him like this. Lucas pulled out his phone and dialed Ralphs number. Hi Ralph? Yeah
I have to cancel today.
Ralph sounded concerned, Whats wrong?
Its nothing, I just
I dont think we should study together anymore.
What? Why?
Er, Lucas thought fast. I just dont care about my grades anymore. Well that sounded morbid. Lucas winced and wanted to hit himself.
What the? Youre worrying me, man. Im coming over.
Nodont. said Lucas, looking in the mirror at his state of undress. He sighed. Fine, Ill meet you. Give me a half hour.
Lucas hung up the phone and found a pair of sweats to pull on. He then found a long sleeved t-shirt, then tousled his hair and flattened his cow ears so they were undetectable. When he deemed he looked practically satisfactory, he sighed, grabbed his backpack, and left the house to meet Ralph who lived a few blocks away.
Ralph was sitting on the porch waiting. He quickly stood and let Lucas inside.
Lucas headed into the kitchen, not meeting Ralphs eyes. Today were doing calculus, right? he said as he unpacked his bag. He hunched slightly to hide his form.
Yeah, said Ralph. Lucas could feel him staring.
The two sat down and tried to study in an uncomfortable silence. Occasionally Ralph threw questions his way, and Lucas always answered him curtly.
Ralph also kept looking for excuses to touch Lucas such as when reaching for a pencil, Ralphs hand brushed Lucass. Or turning a page of the text book they were sharing Ralph insisted he left his in his school locker his hand glided over Lucass arm. Though his cheeks reddened, Lucas tried to ignore it.
Lucas, Ralph finally said, after an hour of silence.
Lucas raised his face from his notebook. What is it Ralph? he said impatiently.
Lucas froze when Ralph leaned closer, reaching out towards Lucass hair, where his cow-ears were hidden. Lucas nearly fell out of his chair to avoid him.
Ralph pulled back, looking panicked. Oh my god, Im so sorry. I swear I thought you were gay. Or maybe you are, and youre just not into me? I get it, Im super-lame, rambled Ralph, looking as though he wanted to disintegrate.
Lucas was in a similar state of mortification. No, it's not that. IIm pretty sure I am gay. And, er, I dont dislike you Ralph. In fact, as Lucas stared at Ralphs blushing state of self-deprecation, he oddly just started to like him more. Its just that
Its just what? said Ralph pitifully.
Lucas had never dated. Hed never even kissed anyone. He had always been too self-conscious about hishis biological status. And he just didnt see an outcome where a potential lover wouldnt freak out at his bizarre body. Lucas sighed, feeling resigned. He figured he might as well get it over with. He just hoped that Ralph wasnt cruel, and wouldnt tell anyone. But then, who would believe him?
Lucas mussed his hair, allowed his cow-ears to pop free. Forcing himself not to overthink, he abruptly pulled off his shirt, flashing Ralph with the sight of his four nipples, with the soft hill of flesh that had developed beneath each. Breasts. A-cups, Lucas estimated.
Ralph stared at him in stunned silence.
Thats not all, Lucas said weakly, hating himself the more he thought about it. His face red, he stood and pushed down his waistband just enough to reveal the slightly-bloated pink udder, the nubs only slightly larger than his nipples now.
He had never shown his true self to anyone before. Even his family didnt know the extent of his changes since puberty had started. It felt horrifying, but also liberating. Lucas dropped his shirt and yanked his pants back up. Despite it all, the vacant expression on Ralphs face was sort of amusing. Im well Im half cow. Female cow. So Im like, intersex, I think
I guess. Its a long story, Ralph. And its a lot. But I seem to be getting more, er, cow-like every day, his voice quavered, but he quickly recollected his composure. Im becoming more female, and, yeah, it just doesnt make sense to be in a relationship. Give me a second, Lucas managed as his voice squeaked. He took a deep breath, and coughed. Then resumed. Heh, anyway, I showed you all this because I think youre a good guy, and I trust you. I trust you not to tell anyone. I trust you not to use this against me some day. Now if youll excuse me, Ill see myself out.
As Lucas grabbed his backpack and began to hastily stuff his books into it, Ralph seemed to snap out of his stupor.
He stood and grabbed Lucass shoulder, causing Lucas to freeze. Yourereally weird, Ralph blurted.
Lucas blinked. Quite. He gave a shaky laugh.
But I still like you.
What? Lucas snapped, but suddenly Ralph was pressing a kiss to his lips, and Lucas was too surprised to respond.
As Ralph pulled back, he marveled at Lucas. He tentatively stroked Lucass still-visible cow-ear with his hand. Youre amazing, he laughed.
II am?
As if to affirm this, Ralph kissed him again.
