The expression Reyna wore was one of bafflement. Youre pregnant!? she said.
No, Becky protested, flinching at Reynas volume. She glanced around in paranoia even though she knew no one else was home. Thats the problem Im having. She motioned to her swollen stomach. I think I have parasites.
Reyna looked at her skeptically. Theres no way that
A bug chose that moment to fall out from between Beckys thighs and plop onto the floor. It startled both girls into silence, Reyna looking like she might jump out of her skin and Becky reddening in mortification.
As Becky looked down at the individual insect, for the first time she noticed that it seemed bigger than when she had first started to spot them. She wondered if all the bugs inside her had gotten larger. She shuddered.
What the hell was that? said Reyna, looking nauseous.
Becky shifted awkwardly in the oversized T-shirt she was wearing. Parasite, she managed.
Becky, thats not awhat the fuck! said Reyna, jumping back as several more insects splattered onto the floor.
Becky felt as though her face might catch fire. Okay, if its not a parasite, then nghhhh whatever it is. She held her stomach as it gave a lurch. These things are inside of me Reyna. I need your help.
Reyna was aghast and proceeded to stare at Becky for a moment. She started to laugh, but her smile fell when she saw that Becky wasnt laughing as well. After that, Reyna actually pinched herself. All the while Becky shifted uncomfortably, pressing her thighs together as the pressure inside her shifted downwards.
This isnt some messed up dream? said Reyna eventually.
No, said Becky impatiently.
And its not a weird prank?
Reyna, Becky pleaded, but she couldnt hold it in any longer. Her thighs quavered as a fat wad of insects all but plopped onto the floor.
Dios mios! Reyna said, backing up far enough to hit the wall. The puddle of bright purple beetles squirmed about, most of them crawling up Beckys legs again.
Gnhhhh are you gonna help or not ? Becky groaned, clutching the bottom of her churning gut.
Beckywhat the fuck? Reyna said. She paused and tried to better articulate herself. I meanwhat the fuck?
I dont know, Becky answered. I just woke up one day and I wasI was infested. I dont know where they came from, I just know that its getting worse. Th-theyre in my stomach, Rey. And I think theyre mm multiplying. Becky released a belch and dropped several more bugs from between her trembling thighs.
The other girl quietly cursed. We need to get you to a hospital.
No! Could you imagine the media attention?
Reyna apparently needed to sit down. She practically staggered her way to the couch. Becky could feel the bugs growing increasingly restless. She needed sugar. She turned and made her way back to the kitchen.
There was a pitcher of orange juice in the fridge. Becky pulled it out and brought it to the counter with the intention of filling a glass for herself. But at some point between the fridge and the counter, she must have changed her mind, because Becky found herself bringing the whole pitcher to her lips, glugging down the beverage in only seconds. When she finished, her insides squirmed more slowly and sluggishly. She wiped her mouth and turned to see Reyna standing in the doorway, watching her with uncertainty.
Is it contagious? Reyna asked.
Becky frowned in thought. Not that Im aware, she said as she dug around in a cabinet. None of my family has any problems. Beckys hand closed around a bottle of honey. She would keep it on hand for later.
Reyna walked in and pulled out a chair at the kitchen table. Tell me everything.
Becky did.
She told Reyna how she had first started seeing the insects around the house, more specifically in her bedroom. How the beetles had started appearing on her skin and in her panties. She told Reyna about the horror of the vaginal cup incidenthow she had come to discover that the insects were coming from inside her. Ever since, Ive just been growing. And theres just more and more of them. Sugar seems to get them to relax a little, but its just getting out of hand.
Reyna had been taking notes, but as Becky finished, Reyna just stared at her in combined unease and astonishment.
I can I can take your vitals, Reyna said finally, snapping out of her daze. A full check-up. Lets figure this out.
Becky nodded gratefully. The two went back to the living room, and Becky lay across the couch as Reyna did a thorough exam.
Well, youre perfectly healthy at least, said Reyna when it was done. Aside from well She trailed off. Your body seems to be interpreting this as a pregnancy. Youre even getting a little engorged.
What? Becky looked down at her chest. She was not sure how she had failed to notice the growth of her chest, but she supposed she had been thoroughly distracted by other developments. Becky reached up and gently cupped her breasts, noticing that they were fuller in her hands. She must have gone up a full cup size. Reyna, what are we going to do? Becky asked.
Reyna frowned in thought. I do have one idea. But youll have to trust me on this.
Im honestly willing to try anything, Becky said.
Give me five minutes. Reyna left in the direction of the kitchen. Becky could hear cupboards opening and closing. She sat in silence absently cradling her tight stomach. She looked as though she was seven months pregnant. There was no way this could pass as regular weight gain anymore.
Reyna returned moments later, clutching a large water bottle filled with a grayish brown liquid full of floating particles. She handed it to Becky who twisted her face. Drink up.
What is this? said Becky, examining the unappealing fluid.
Homemade insecticide. Nontoxic to humans.
Becky almost wished she hadnt asked.
Hey, do you want my help or not? said Reyna at seeing Beckys lack of enthusiasm.
Hesitating just a moment longer, Becky opened the bottle, pinched her nostrils, and downed it.
It tasted like mud, or what Becky imagined mud tasted like. She gagged several times in her efforts to finish it. But at least it didnt taste like something chemical and poisonous. She had to trust that Reyna knew what she was doing.
So? said Reyna once Becky had finished. Feel anything?
Becky smacked her lips a few times, her face fixed with a grimace. Not really.
Lets wait a while.
Becky shrugged, her hopes sinking.
Reyna picked up the television remote. Do you guys have Cineflix?
Yeah. Ill be right back. Becky headed to her room.
Once she was in her bedroom, door locked behind her, Becky partook in the one detail of her condition that she hadnt had the nerve to tell Reyna about.
She climbed onto her bed, honey bottle in hand. Sprawled on her back, she planted her feet on the mattress, and heaved her pelvis up as comfortably as she could.
Fifteen minutes later, Becky went back to the living room, moving awkwardly around the sensation of the plug buried in her opening. She gave Reyna a strained smile and eased down on the couch beside her. The two watched a tedious police procedural, though Becky found it difficult to focus on anything besides her growing hunger, prickling abdomen, and lurching insides.
Oh! Becky perked, grimacing. One of her hands flew to her navel.
Reyna turned to her in excitement. Whats happening? Is it working? she said.
It had been an hour, so if it was, it was about time. But Becky wasnt quite sure what she was feeling. The beetles seemed to be making formations inside her, moving more forcefully, causing her insides to lurch and her belly to wobble as the oval fat shapes of them rolled against the surface of her packed, bloated flesh.
It didnt feel like they were dying. It felt like the opposite. Ahhhh Becky moaned, arching, twisting her thighs, feebly reaching down to remove the plug, because she suddenly felt extremely tight.
The plug clattered to the floor, but none of the beetles followed. Her labia was plump and swollen, a tingling pressure within it making her knees quiver.
Her belly tightened. Nghhhh Becky gripped it, gasping and reddening as she felt it heave in a powerful jerk that left her breathless. Oh god, she gasped out, as her belly tightened again, her shirt wrapping more snugly around her as it visibly pushed forward, making her navel ache and her loins moisten as she crumpled her face and struggled to bear it all.
Errggghhhh! she grunted as tension filled her. Before she knew it, she was heaving herself up, gripping the wall, arching, stretching, straining for relief as her belly rolled outward in short bursts that left her pushing, grunting, bearing down, loins hotly engorged, shuddering, but not releasing.
The contractions seemed to end. Gasping for breath, Becky hunched forward. One hand held the wall while the other trailed over her sweat-sleeked belly over and over again, attempting to sooth the taut skin. It felt tingly tight, freshly stretched. She swore she looked at term with child by then.
She could see Reyna hoovering in her periphery, caught between coming over to aid and running for her life. Reyna lingered in limbo, hands extended but inactive. What the fuck, Becky? she whispered.
Ngghhh mmmhhhhnn Becky shifted her hips, adjusting the weight heavy on them, too heavy, pushing down. What the fuck, she echoed in weary resignation. She met her friends eyes.
There wasnt a shred of hope in them.
-
Becky had perched herself on the couch where she sunk deep into the cushions. She had no clue how she was going to explain this to her brother, let alone her parents. Her belly was huge. Even her breasts seemed slightly more bloated. She laid both hands against her belly, pressing into it, almost willing it to go back in. Rey she wheezed.
I brought you some tea. Reyna arrived from the kitchen. She was holding a saucer and tea cup, and it only shook slightly as she handed it over.
Becky forced down a sip, but choked at the blandness. She balanced the saucer on the top curve of her belly and looked up at Reyna who had stepped back to appraise her.
Reyna was wearing a troubled look. Absently, she chewed her bottom lip. We really should get you to a hospital, she pleaded.
No, said Becky irritably as she fidgeted. Belched. It will be all over the news. My college campus will find out. And this is your fault, she restrained herself from adding.
Becky, this is beyond that.
Not it isnt. Reyna, right now college is the only thing I care about, said Becky frankly. She cupped the side of her gut, the insects strangely inactive except for a deep, nearly imperceptible throbbing that seemed a threat of more growth. Im just a littlebacked up. At worst, people will think Im pregnant. Its just its just
These things are stretching you tight. Reyna finally approached and laid a tentative hand on the face of Beckys stomach.
Parasites, said Becky, simultaneously trying to cope and rationalize. She thought of the impoverished children with swollen stomachs living in the slums of countries her parents frequently donated to. She thought of the round-bellied dogs at the shelter she sometimes visited on the way to school. Parasites, that was all. She was hardly the first creature to be full of them. Maybe we should try a parasite medication.
Im not sure
Reyna.
Reyna swallowed. Youre right. Seems logical.
Can you get it?
I I think. My mom sometimes leaves a prescription pad in her home office. I can write something up.
Thanks, said Becky in relief.
But Becks, what if it backfires like the insecticide?
Becky refused to consider that.
