-
In a matter of weeks everyone was sure to figure out that Olivia wasn't really pregnant.
Her job would fire her. Word of her perfidy would spread fast and she would be blacklisted in the industry. She might even have to move to a new city.
Olivia didn't know what to do. It seemed that she had to actually get pregnant. But even then, her story wouldn't add up. She would be months behind in her condition compared to what she had claimed to be. And just the thought of owning a baby was nauseating. Olivia hated children and it seemed ridiculous to go through all the trouble just to put the runt up for adoption.
There had to be another way. She had to make herself look pregnant. But that was next to impossible not unless she...well...
Olivia took a moment to think about fat people, even as her lip curled and her nose wrinkled. The thought of putting on weight honestly disgusted her, yet she couldn't stop thinking about the way drunkards had those huge bellies that pushed out above their belts, making them look as though they were pregnant themselves.
"Yuck," she muttered.
“Hey Olivia. How are you feeling?”
Olivia stiffened but then raised her head to gaze at the random colleague standing beside her cubicle whose name she couldn't remember.
“Okayish,” she said, attempting a weary smile. “Kinda nauseous. Um, bloated?”
“Oh you poor thing,” said the woman. “Why don't I get you some peppermint tea to settle your stomach?”
“Make that a coffee. Ground, not instant. Two creams one sugar.” Olivia redirected her attention to her phone.
The woman hurried off to produce the order and Olivia went back to mulling over things.
She had no choice at that point. It was put on weight, get pregnant, or prepare for her life to crumble to pieces. Sure she could move on to a whole new city but who was to say she would find a job there when she couldn't even get one in the large metropolitan area where she currently resided. And that idea didn't account for moving expenses either. She wasn't particularly good with finances or saving. Her sole bank account contained fifty dollars.
"Fuck," Olivia whispered, putting her face in her hands.
“Everything okay, Liv?” asked Tina from one cubicle over.
Yet another coddling sycophant. Usually Olivia enjoyed the attention, but at present she wasn't in the best of moods. “Just a headache,” she grumbled.
“Oh, darn. I hear that's normal for your condition. Let me know if I can get you anything.”
“Yeah,” said Olivia, not lifting her head.
This was going to suck.
-
Olivia started eating.
She found it best to shove food down without really looking at it or thinking about the calorie contents. She didn't take time to consider the flavors or textures because if she did she was sure she would retch.
Olivia couldn't bring herself to prepare her own food. Instead she went to the most unhealthy fast food venues she could find, not going inside but pulling into the drive-through. She ordered burgers, fries, tacos, pizza slices, and whatever other cheap crap they offered.
She didn't want Mike to find out about the abrupt change in her diet. After all, she was supposed to be putting on weight naturally, as a pregnant woman would. Olivia found herself eating in her car a lot more than usual, forcing down unhealthy meals during her lunch breaks and post-work hours. Her stomach would bloat and ache, unaccustomed to this kind of abuse. It was odd to be so full all the time. She had been used to a chronic, unsettled feeling in her gut, but she could now identify it ass hunger. It had been normal for her.
In acknowledging this she realized that she'd probably had an eating disorder. But now she was the opposite extreme, gorging herself on too many calories. One evening Mike surprised her with dinner after she had already covertly gorged herself with three double-cheeseburgers during her lunch break. It was a true challenge to stuff down the chicken and rice he had prepared for her as he watched on loving, clearly pleased with her eating.
“I think you're starting to show a little,” he told her.
"What?" said Olivia, a bit startled. Her fork clattered against her plate.
"Yeah, it's subtle. But I think your tummy's filling out. Just a little."
Mike seemed completely enamored. Olivia slowly looked down at herself.
What Mike thought to be their child was the bloating in her belly caused by too many meals compacted there at once. Just the sight of it made her queasy, but she closed her eyes. She couldn’t believe how stuffed she was.
She wanted to yell and curse in frustration of what she’d had to resort to. Instead she strained her lips into a smile. “I was hoping you’d notice.”
“Oh honey.” Mike took her hand, looking like he might cry. The sentimental moron.
Despite the fact that she felt ill from eating so much that day, Olivia finished her plate of food. She was committed to this lie. There was no backing out.
-
Olivia was putting on weight.
It was to be expected considering the way she was knocking food back.
She tried to binge in the mornings. It was the best way to get her stomach bloated and pushing out for all of the office to see. And it wasn't hard. Olivia was thin and slight so any change proved to be glaring on her physique.
“Finally moving along there,” Tom observed at the water cooler.
“Yeah,” said Olivia distractedly, not looking up from filling her mug. Lately she felt lethargic, heavy, and generally sick to her stomach. It was from all the eating, she knew. Food fatigue or whatever they called it.
She was also feeling rather displeased with her appearance. She hated catching sight of the changes in her mirror. The curve of her abdomen. The added padding to her hips and ass. She hoped she didn't get fat all over her. An idea suddenly occurred to her.
On her way home from work, Olivia stopped at a convenience store. She had convinced Mike that she was taking a couple of graduate school courses online. It added some extra alone time to her schedule.
Olivia heaved a twelve-pack of beer into her cart and rolled it to the register.
“Will this be all, miss?”
Olivia nodded, absently scrolling through her phone. “Wait, um...” She grabbed a large bag of chips off a nearby display and dropped it onto the counter.
After completing her purchase, Olivia headed home, not before stopping by the nearby Chinese restaurant and ordering an extra-large carton of lo mein and a dozen fried chicken legs.
When she got into her house, she lowered her food to the coffee table in front of the TV before plopping down on the couch and digging in. She paused only to guzzle beers and release the occasional belch. It wasn't long before she was buzzed but this just helped her forget about the growing strain in her gut.
Drinking more beer more often would be a good idea. After all, a beer gut was what she was striving for. Olivia briefly wondered if nonalcoholic beer would do the trick yet this whole experience seemed much less unpleasant when she was at least a little tipsy. The process of eating like this disturbed her and in itself was an arduous.
Regular beer would suit her well.
Olivia belched then groaned and rubbed her stomach.
-
“Wow, you're really growing all of a sudden,” Mike remarked.
Olivia struggled not to glare at him. “I guess so,” she chirped.
It was true. Her body was transforming. She estimated that she looked as though she was four months pregnant, though she was still behind as she was pretending to be five.
“Ready to head out? This movie got really good reviews.”
“As long as you're driving,” said Olivia who was admittedly buzzed. She took a large gulp from the thermos she had in hand. Mike thought it was tea but lately Olivia just kept beer on hand, or sometimes condensed milk, disgusting as that was.
“Of course m’lady,” said Mike cornily. He interpreted her frequent drunkenness to “mommy-brain” and fatigue. He opened the passengers’ side door of his minivan and Olivia plopped down inside.
That was another thing. Mike had recently sold his sedan and purchased a fucking minivan. Just the sight of it brought her groin to desert dryness. God, he was so pathetic. How could he be so quick to embrace this baby thing?
Olivia's bag was packed with snacks for the movie, but she found herself already tearing into one of the chocolate bars held there.
Mike just chuckled and shook his head. “The cravings are really getting to you,” he said as he started the ignition.
“You could say that,” Olivia responded darkly.
-
Olivia’s stomach grumbled.
It was new but becoming increasingly frequent.
Her body was adapting to the constant feedings and was even beginning to crave them.
And the beer was really doing the trick. Her gut was surging, shirts and blouses getting tight and drawing up to the point that she would have to buy new clothing soon. Maternity clothes?
Olivia had finally gotten a job interview and things hadn't gone well to put it nicely. The hiring manager had thrown one glance at her belly then conducted the interview as rapidly as possible, barely waiting to hear any of her responses. They weren't looking to hire a pregnant person. What company would?
She looked pregnant, even to outsiders, and she was truly and royally fucked. If she stopped posing as pregnant she would lose her current job. But if she continued to do it, she wouldn't be able to get a new one.
That day Peggy, of all people, made a surprise visit to the office with her gross newborn. The thing cried, gurgled, and dribbled all over. It produced disgusting noises and atrocious smells.
Peggy looked exhausted yet strangely content about the whole thing. Olivia was surprised when the other women peeled herself away from her coddling entourage to corner Olivia at her cubicle.
“I was so surprised when I heard the news,” said Peggy, bouncing her creature on her hip. “You just didn't strike me as a baby person.”
Olivia twisted her lips in what she hoped was a smile.
“Let me know if you need any advice. You carry so well. Wow, you're just glowing.”
“Thanks,” Olivia spat. She turned back to her computer screen and started typing miscellaneous things, hoping that Peggy would take the hint.
“I mean our kids will be less than a year apart. We could have play dates.”
Olivia chuckled a bit neurotically as she shook her head at the depravity of this whole thing.
Then her stomach grumbled. She frowned and threw a glance down at the humiliatingly pump curve on her torso.
“Oh, can I get you anything?” Peggy babbled. “Actually, I should have a snack...” She rummaged in the large baby bag hanging off her free shoulder before withdrawing a clear bag full of dry-looking biscuits. Olivia eyed them.
“They're actually lactation cookies," said Peggy. “But they're good, I swear. And it pays to get started early... I got these at Mommy Madness. It’s that cute little shop on Main—”
Olivia grabbed the bag. “Thanks, Pegs,” she deadpanned as she withdrew a biscuit and bit into it. Dry though it was, it was actually kind of tasty. She detected ginger bread and caramel among other flavors. She turned her gaze back to her computer screen.
“Well, enjoy,” said Peggy lightly, finally backing off a bit. “You have my number. If you need anything at all.”
Not looking up, Olivia ignored her. Then, thankfully, Peggy was gone.
-
“Did you hear that Peggy isn't coming back?” Olivia heard Patrick say a few days later. He was talking to someone two cubicles down.
“I know. She wants to do the ‘stay-at-home’ thing,” Christina whined.
“It totally sucks. She was one of the good ones.”
Olivia's eyebrows raised at this. She could only hope it was true. Peggy was the bane of her existence without even trying.
“But now who's gonna get Jamison’s old office?”
“I don't know but I think I heard Turner mention Olivia.”

I can't help but think she didn't think this plan through very well at all. But I'm delighted to see she likes the taste of lactation cookies...
