"You incompetent fool," Jessica snapped, as Veronica cowered in her cubicle. To Victor, this was a regular scene—Jessica yelling at one of the employees for something that couldn't possibly be their fault. "You know that Mr. Black despises coffee. But when he arrived for our brunch meeting this morning, there wasn't a single tea bag in sight! We had nothing to offer him but tap water!"
"I'm s-sorry Jessica," Veronica stammered. "But I have n-nothing to do with the suppli—"
"Mr. Black is one of our top clients," Jessica cut her off. "You made a fool out of me. You made a fool out of this company!"
At this point, something peculiar occurred. Jessica took notice of a box of donuts on Veronica's desk. Jessica arbitrarily grabbed up a donut and began to chomp away at it, all while continuing to rage and rant.
"I should have you demoted right now," Jessica went on. "As a matter of fact..." She greedily scarfed a third donut, not caring as chunks went flying with her talking. Employees in nearby cubicles took cover.
Jessica continued to eat donuts rapidly and voraciously, hardly seeming conscious of doing it.
She had put on a bit of weight in recent days. Well, a lot of it, and quite rapidly. Her whole body had taken on a layer of fat, her clothing fitting awkwardly as her formerly fit frame descended into undeniable chubbiness. But the most noticeable change was the bulging pot belly she had developed, which was presently straining her shirt. In fact, the strain seemed to increase with every donut she stuffed down.
"And one more thing—" Jessica started, but then actually belched, and a popping sound drew everyone’s attention to the otherwise routine tantrum.
The pop was caused by the forceful collision of a small object—a button?—with one of the cubicle walls. It took Victor a moment to realize what had occurred. Everyone's eyes steadily drew over to Jessica—to her blouse, specifically. The bottom button had broken off and flung away from the sheer momentum of pressure caused by her belly.
Victor immediately ducked his head down, joining several others in trying to hide his laughter. It wasn't very successful.
Jessica went red. She gave a stunned look to the latest half-eaten donut in her hand and dumped it on Veronica's desk, before making a hasty retreat to her office.
Victor suspected that only he had noticed the faint glow peeking out from the gap in Veronica's blouse.
He knew by then that he wasn't just imagining it—the glow, the gluttony, the weight gain—the magic must have worked somehow.
Now's my chance, Victor realized as Jessica slammed her office door shut behind her. It was now or never. He had to take the risk and capitalize if he could, or this would all have been for nothing.
He walked over to Jessica’s office door and knocked, but didn't wait for an answer. He allowed himself inside, and tried to contain his amusement at the sight of her angrily tearing into a box of chocolates, just stuffing them into her mouth till her cheeks bulged. It was clear that she had no control whatsoever.
"Hi Jessica," Victor said loudly, causing her attention to snap up at him from her seat at her desk, her expression dangerous, even with her bulging cheeks. "I just wanted to follow up on my request for a raise. I know there have been a lot of changes recently. A lot of gain. A lot of growth," he added suggestively. "I thought that if we work together on this, we can both benefit. You know, get everything under control."
Jessica's eyes widened with fury. She attempted to speak, but only produced muffled noises. She then paused and took a huge gulp, forcing the contents of her packed mouth down her throat. "You absolute invalid. You pissant. How many times do I have to tell you that you'll get a raise when hell freezes over!"
Victor scowled. So that was how Jessica wanted to play things. "It will get worse," he warned. "I'm not one to bluff."
"Get the hell out of my office," Jessica snapped. She started rummaging around in her desk before producing a large cookie tin. She hurriedly began to peel off the lid.
Victor just shook his head at her. He turned and exited the office, silently vowing to make the curse far worse.
