Tori underwent a minor procedure the day before the conference. The thing was, she couldn't even remember going in for the procedure. She just woke up in the clinic with Valerie smiling down at her.
"All done," Valerie said, snapping her gloves as she pulled them off. "You might experience a little soreness. Should only last a day or so."
Tori felt violated. She wondered if the scientists had resorted to drugging her rather than just asking her to comply. Was her growing distrust and contempt towards them really so obvious?
She didn't know what the procedure had entailed but she didn't want to think about it. Her nerves distracted her from the matter anyway. The day of the conference, she was fitted with a padded maternity bra in addition to a simple blouse, ridiculous as it all felt.
She was so anxious that she wanted to back down from going to the conference, but she forced herself to go through with it. There had to be something beyond the monotony of the house. She had to be open to the possibility of an outside world again.
The bra felt awkward on her sensitized breasts. They were hot, full, and sore. Her tail squirmed ceaselessly every moment that she wasn't paying attention to her movements.
Soon she was waiting backstage and this was certainly more than she had anticipated. She wasn't just an attendee. She was an exhibit. She wondered how quickly she could glide off. And if someone would try to stop her. Which direction would she go? Standing to flank her in crisp suits were Valerie, Wilson, and Doctor Reed. There was some announcement on a loudspeaker, but Tori could hear little beyond her own pulse pounding in her eardrums.
The curtains were drawn back. The lights were nearly blinding. But Tori could see an expansive dark room stretched out before her, seats in rows like a movie theater—just several times larger. The background chattering of voices rapidly died down, to be replaced with gasps and whispers. Tori could feel thousands of eyes staring, drinking in every inch of her body, practically dissecting her. Valerie took a step forward so that she was directly in front of the podium.
"Hello, my name is Dr. Valerie Nephron. This is Dr. Wilson and Dr. Reed. But I'm sure you have little interest in us at this moment. We'd like you to meet Tori."
-
The abundant need to flee had yet to subside. Tori balanced a plate of hors d’oeuvres, pretending to pick at it from time to time, though she wasn't sure why. Someone had just handed it to her.
After Wilson and Valerie had answered several dozen questions about Tori and the nature of the experiment, there was a casual meet and greet for all of the day's presentations. But everyone seemed to be gravitating towards Tori, ogling her from a safe distance or approaching and trying to glean as much information as they could. Wilson and Valerie took the opportunity to show Tori off to some of the big names in the industry.
"Yes, the program was entirely voluntary," Wilson was saying to some famed scientist, doctor Gilbert. "Tori here turned out being the perfect subject."
Tori couldn't even bring herself to smile or nod. Her nerves were shot. Her eyes darted around.
"Just astonishing," said Gilbert. "And you insist she was able to gestate offspring?"
"It's all thoroughly documented, doctor,” Wilson responded. “And I hope you're not questioning the credibility of our experiment?"
Gilbert ignored the remark. "So engorged. The milk is abundant, isn't it? But she produced quite a lot of offspring."
"Indeed."
"I'd like a look at the mammaries on this thing."
"By all means." Wilson took Tori's plate.
Before Tori even realized what was happening, Dr. Gilbert reached out and jerked her shirt open, right there in the room full of chattering scientists and physicians nipping on appetizers. Tori felt blood pool in her face, but she was rendered frozen somehow, hardly able to breathe.
"Fascinating." Gilbert undid the front latch or Tori's bra, Tori's breasts bouncing as they were freed of confinement. Gilbert prodded one, causing the mound to jiggle and Tori to tremble. They were swollen E-cups by then, bloated with engorgement. Tori's right nipple began to drip milk onto the floor.
Tori snapped out of her shock and wrapped her shirt around herself. Gilbert looked vaguely amused. The few scientists who hadn't already been staring at Tori now had their eyes glued to the scene.
"I can't lie Wilson, your work is impressive."
As the two scientists blathered on, Tori desperately looked for somewhere she could get some air. The best option she could find was a corner on the far side of the room that wasn't completely congested with erudites. "Gonna get a drink," she murmured, still awkwardly clutching her blouse around her.
She wasn't sure if Wilson heard her but honestly couldn't care at that moment. She slid gingerly through the room, trying to be invisible even though she was the opposite extreme.
No one stopped her. Some did try to get word in but Tori mentally muted them out. She finally made it to the corner. A few tentatively followed and tried to get her attention. She ignored them until they backed down. Well, some backed down.
"I know it's hard."
Tori slowly raised her head and saw a young man who seemed close to her own age.
"You probably had no idea what you were in for," the young man continued. He leaned on the wall beside Tori.
"Well, yes," said Tori warily.
The young man met Tori's eyes. Not Tori's chest or gut, and his eyes didn't travel along the impressive length of Tori's tail. "It's not all bad, is it?"
"It's—violating," said Tori before she could stop herself. "I know I should just be grateful that they saved my life, but this—this is getting insane. It's past insane."
The young man gazed sadly at Tori. "I'm sorry." It was the most sincere thing Tori had heard in a while. This guy just seemed so...genuine compared to all the others at the conference.
"Who are you?" Tori wanted to know.
"Oh. Excuse my rudeness. I'm doctor Sydney Blackman. But call me Sid."
Another scientist? "But you're so young."
"Yes. Some might describe me as a prodigy. I skipped a few grades, so what?"
Tori cracked a smile for the first time in ages.
"Do you want to get out of here?" said Sid.
The suggestion seemed so out of context. Ludicrous, really. "Um, what?"
"Let's go. This place is stuffy and I'm honestly getting self-conscious."
Tori looked around to see dozens of eyes scrutinizing her, as expected. "How do you think I feel?"
Sid gave a sympathetic smile.
Tori lightly shook her head. "I don't think I'm allowed to leave."
"Tori, you're a human being. Well, partly human. Of course you're allowed to leave."
God, it felt good to be called human. To be treated like a person for once. "But Valerie—"
"As far as I recall from elementary school history, slavery was outlawed in 1865." Sid began to walk along the wall. Tori found herself slithering along with him.
"But they saved my life. I'm theirexperiment."
"And what a great job they've done. Though there was a detriment to going public with you. Now they can't keep you confined. Basic human rights, and all that."
They were outside on a private veranda, Sid having led them through a side exit. The cool night air did feel good and Tori found herself taking in a great gulp of it.
Her stomach grumbled.
She was getting hungry.
"I'm headed off. You can stay or you can come, Tori." Sid lit a cigarette as he walked off the patio towards the convention center parking lot.
"Are you serious?" Tori trailed him. A glance back revealed people pointing towards her, some walking in the direction of the door she had just exited.
"Do I look like I'm kidding?"
"What's in it for you?" Tori blurted.
Sid stopped just short of a clean SUV only a few years old. It looked plain and functional, like maybe it was used to haul around lab equipment. "I just...I don't like the way you were being treated in there." Sid frowned at her, not even trying to disguise his pity.
Tori hesitated for a while, then slid forward, closing several feet of distance so quickly that Sid startled.
"Okay. I'll come. Just for a little while," said Tori, her heart racing.
Sid smiled and opened the passenger's door. Tori sunk inside, drawing and coiling her tail until all of it had shifted into the car. She pulled the door closed as Sid went around to the driver's seat.
Several people had headed out of the building, pointing and jogging. Through the darkness, Tori could just make out Valerie's distraught expression.
Sid pulled out of his parking space and drove out of the lot.
The drive to Sid's house was longer than expected. They had to be driving for at least an hour, proceeding out of the city and into a more rural community.
It would be more quiet, Tori supposed. Less attention, she hoped.
The house looked very typical and suburban from the outside. It was a family house. Two stories.
"All funded by grants and a modest inheritance," Sid said as they got onto the porch and he unlocked the door. "I'm a bit of a workaholic. I even have a home lab built into the basement."
Tori slithered inside where everything seemed so domestic and normal, but not only that—the place was personal, full of knickknacks and framed photos. A tennis racquet leaned on the wall in a corner. There was a shelf against the far wall cluttered with books and papers. There were random souvenirs from past travels—a model of the Eiffel tower, a novelty genie's lamp from Morocco—this was a real home, not just a controlled environment posing as one.
"You can help yourself to anything in the fridge. Though I know your diet is very particular. Yes, I've read up on you Tori," Sid answered Tori's surprised expression. "There are a couple cartons of eggs. Hope that holds you over for the night. I'm gonna put in an order for emu eggs."
"Why are you being so kind?" Tori couldn't help asking.
"Because it's the right thing to do." Sid sighed. "I hope the couch is okay for the night. I'll have the guest room cleaned up for you tomorrow."
"It's fine."
"I don't know about you, but I've had a long day. Think I'm gonna head to bed. You'll find your way around. It's a pretty simple layout."
"Have a good night."
"Let me know if you need anything. Anything at all."
"Thank you," was the only thing Tori could think to say.
Sid offered a weary smile then walked down a corridor off the room, disappearing through a door there.
-
"Sorry, I know they're probably a bad fit," Sid said the following morning at he handed Tori a neatly folded pile of clothes. Well, shirts specifically. "I'm a little pressed for cash. My next grant doesn't come through for another two months."
"It's fine," said Tori, thinking it would be nice to get out of the uncomfortably crisp blouse she had on. She looked at the pile of t-shirts Sid had produced from his own closet. Tori was sure something would suit her.
Her breasts ached. She hadn't realized how dependent she had gotten on nursing. They were hot and bloated round to the point that they were bulging out against the bra cups that had fit her fine the night before.
Her stomach gurgled. She had cleaned off the two dozen refrigerated chicken eggs, but it hadn't nearly been enough. And it had lacked the warm freshness of eggs in the coup at her house, some of them already developing chicks within them.
"Guess what arrived with the milk." Sid went to the counter and heaved up a large basket. He brought it to the table and Tori could see that it was full of the emu eggs that had been promised.
"You didn't have to." Tori was already salivating.
"I know that food is important. You need different options. Live options. I'm working on it."
Sid was a good host.
