Zach underwent a minor procedure the day before the conference. The thing was, he couldn't even remember going in for the procedure. He just woke up in the clinic with Valerie smiling down at him.
"All done," she said, snapping her gloves as she pulled them off. "You might experience a little soreness. Should only last a day or so."
Zach felt violated. He wondered if the scientists had resorted to drugging him rather than just asking him to comply. Was his growing distrust and contempt towards them really so obvious?
He didn't know what the procedure had entailed but he didn't want to think about it. His nerves distracted him from the matter anyway. The day of the conference, he was fitted with a padded bra—an actual bra—in addition to a simple button down shirt and a tie, ridiculous as it all felt.
He was so anxious that he wanted to back down from going to the conference, but he forced himself to go through with it. There had to be something beyond the monotony of the house. He had to be open to the possibility of an outside world again.
The bra felt awkward, like he was wearing half an undershirt. His breasts felt hot, full, and sore. His tail squirmed ceaselessly every moment that he wasn't paying attention to his movements.
Soon he was waiting backstage and this was certainly more than he had anticipated. He wasn't just an attendee. He was an exhibit. He wondered how quickly he could glide off. And if someone would try to stop him. Which direction would he go? Standing to flank him in crisp suits were Valerie, Wilson, and Doctor Reed. There was some announcement on a loudspeaker, but Zach could hear little beyond his own pulse pounding in his eardrums.
The curtains were drawn back. The lights were nearly blinding. But Zach could see an expansive dark room stretched out before him, seats in rows like a movie theater—just several times larger. The background chattering of voices rapidly died down, to be replaced with gasps and whispers. Zach could feel thousands of eyes staring, drinking in every inch of his body, practically dissecting him. Valerie took a step forward so that she was directly in front of the podium.
"Hello, my name is Dr. Valerie Nephron. This is Dr. Wilson and Dr. Reed. But I'm sure you have little interest in us at this moment. We'd like you to meet Zach."
-
The abundant need to flee had yet to subside. Zach balanced a plate of hors d’oeuvres, pretending to pick at it from time to time, though he wasn't sure why. Someone had just handed it to him.
After Wilson and Valerie had answered several dozen questions about him and the nature of the experiment, there was a casual meet and greet for all of the day's presentations. But everyone seemed to be gravitating towards Zach, ogling him from a safe distance or approaching and trying to glean as much information as they could. Wilson and Valerie took the opportunity to show him off to some of the big names in the industry.
"Yes, the program was entirely voluntary," Wilson was saying to some famed scientist, doctor Gilbert. "Zach here turned out being the perfect subject."
Zach couldn't even bring himself to smile or nod. His nerves were shot. His eyes darted around.
"Just astonishing," said Gilbert. "And you insist she was able to gestate offspring?"
"Zach is technically and biologically still male in terms of his remaining human organ systems," said Wilson. "It's all thoroughly documented, doctor. And I hope you're not questioning the credibility of our experiment?"
Gilbert ignored the remark. "So engorged. The milk is abundant, isn't it? But he produced quite a lot of offspring."
"Indeed."
"I'd like a look at the mammaries on this thing."
"By all means." Wilson took Zach's plate.
Before Zach even realized what was happening, Dr. Gilbert reached out and jerked his shirt open, right there in the room full of chattering scientists and physicians nipping on appetizers. Zach felt blood pool in his face, but he was rendered frozen somehow, hardly able to breathe.
"Fascinating." Gilbert undid the front latch or Zach's bra, Zach's breasts bouncing as they were freed of confinement. Gilbert prodded one, causing the mound to jiggle and Zach to tremble. They were swollen E-cups by then, bloated with engorgement. Zach's right nipple began to drip milk onto the floor.
Zach snapped out of his shock and wrapped his shirt around himself. Gilbert looked vaguely amused. The few scientists who hadn't already been staring at Zach now had their eyes glued to the scene.
"I can't lie Wilson, your work is impressive."
As the two scientists blathered on, Zach desperately looked for somewhere he could get some air. The best option he could find was a corner on the far side of the room that wasn't completely congested with erudites. "Gonna get a drink," he murmured, still awkwardly clutching his button-down around him.
He wasn't sure if Wilson heard him but honestly couldn't care at that moment. He slid gingerly through the room, trying to be invisible even though he was the opposite extreme.
No one stopped him. Some did try to get word in but Zach mentally muted them out. He finally made it to the corner. A few tentatively followed and tried to get his attention. He ignored them until they backed down. Well, some backed down.
"I know it's hard."
Zach slowly raised his head and saw a young man who seemed close to his own age.
"You probably had no idea what you were in for," the young man continued. He leaned on the wall beside Zach.
"Well, yes," said Zach warily.
The young man met Zach's eyes. Not Zach's chest or gut, and his eyes didn't travel along the impressive length of Zach's tail. "It's not all bad, is it?"
"It's—violating," said Zach before he could stop himself. "I know I should just be grateful that they saved my life, but this—this is getting insane. It's past insane."
The other man gazed sadly at Zach. "I'm sorry." It was the most sincere thing Zach had heard in a while. This guy just seemed so...genuine compared to all the others at the conference.
"Who are you?" Zach wanted to know.
"Oh. Excuse my rudeness. I'm doctor Sydney Blackman. But call me Sid."
Another scientist? "But you're so young."
"Yes. Some might describe me as a prodigy. I skipped a few grades, so what?"
Zach cracked a smile for the first time in ages.
"Do you want to get out of here?" said Sid.
The suggestion seemed so out of context. Ludicrous, really. "Um, what?"
"Let's go. This place is stuffy and I'm honestly getting self-conscious."
Zach looked around to see dozens of eyes scrutinizing him, as expected. "How do you think I feel?"
Sid gave a sympathetic smile.
Zach lightly shook his head. "I don't think I'm allowed to leave."
"Zach, you're a human being. Well, partly human. Of course you're allowed to leave."
God, it felt good to be called human. To be treated like a person for once. "But Valerie—"
"As far as I recall from elementary school history, slavery was outlawed in 1865." Sid began to walk along the wall. Zach found himself slithering along with him.
"But they saved my life. I'm their experiment."
"And what a great job they've done. Though there was a detriment to going public with you. Now they can't keep you confined. Basic human rights, and all that."
They were outside on a private veranda, Sid having led them through a side exit. The cool night air did feel good and Zach found himself taking in a great gulp of it.
His stomach grumbled.
He was getting hungry.
"I'm headed off. You can stay or you can come, Zach." Sid lit a cigarette as he walked off the patio towards the convention center parking lot.
"Are you serious?" Zach trailed him. A glance back revealed people pointing towards him, some walking in the direction of the door he had just exited.
"Do I look like I'm kidding?"
"What's in it for you?" Zach blurted.
Sid stopped just short of a clean SUV only a few years old. It looked plain and functional, like maybe it was used to haul around lab equipment. "I just...I don't like the way you were being treated in there." Sid frowned at him, not even trying to disguise his pity.
Zach hesitated for a while, then slid forward, closing several feet of distance so quickly that Sid startled.
"Okay. I'll come. Just for a little while," said Zach, his heart racing.
Sid smiled and opened the passenger's door. Zach sunk inside, drawing and coiling his tail until all of it had shifted into the car. He pulled the door closed as Sid went around to the driver's seat.
Several people had headed out of the building, pointing and jogging. Through the darkness, Zach could just make out Valerie's distraught expression.
Sid pulled out of his parking space and drove out of the lot.
The drive to Sid's house was longer than expected. They had to be driving for at least an hour, proceeding out of the city and into a more rural community.
It would be more quiet, Zach supposed. Less attention, he hoped.
The house looked very typical and suburban from the outside. It was a family house. Two stories.
"All funded by grants and a modest inheritance," Sid said as they got onto the porch and he unlocked the door. "I'm a bit of a workaholic. I even have a home lab built into the basement."
Zach slithered inside where everything seemed so domestic and normal, but not only that—the place was personal, full of knickknacks and framed photos. A tennis racquet leaned on the wall in a corner. There was a shelf against the far wall cluttered with books and papers. There were random souvenirs from past travels—a model of the Eiffel tower, a novelty genie's lamp from Morocco—this was a real home, not just a controlled environment posing as one.
"You can help yourself to anything in the fridge. Though I know your diet is very particular. Yes, I've read up on you Zach," Sid answered Zach's surprised expression. "There are a couple cartons of eggs. Hope that holds you over for the night. I'm gonna put in an order for emu eggs."
"Why are you being so kind?" Zach couldn't help asking.
"Because it's the right thing to do." Sid sighed. "I hope the couch is okay for the night. I'll have the guest room cleaned up for you tomorrow."
"It's fine."
"I don't know about you, but I've had a long day. Think I'm gonna head to bed. You'll find your way around. It's a pretty simple layout."
"Have a good night."
"Let me know if you need anything. Anything at all."
"Thank you," was the only thing Zach could think to say.
Sid offered a weary smile then walked down a corridor off the room, disappearing through a door there.
-
"Sorry, I know they're probably a bad fit," Sid said the following morning at he handed Zach a neatly folded pile of clothes. Well, shirts specifically. "I'm a little pressed for cash. My next grant doesn't come through for another two months."
"It's fine," said Zach, thinking it would be nice to get out of the uncomfortably crisp button-down he had on. He looked at the pile of t-shirts Sid had produced from his own closet. Zach was sure something would fit.
His breasts ached. He hadn't realized how dependent he had gotten on nursing. They were hot and bloated round to the point that they were bulging out against the bra cups that had fit him fine the night before.
His stomach gurgled. He had cleaned off the two dozen refrigerated chicken eggs, but it hadn't nearly been enough. And it had lacked the warm freshness of eggs in the coup at his house, some of them already developing chicks within them.
"Guess what arrived with the milk." Sid went to the counter and heaved up a large basket. He brought it to the table and Zach could see that it was full of the emu eggs that had been promised.
"You didn't have to." Zach was already salivating.
"I know that food is important. You need different options. Live options. I'm working on it."
Sid was a good host.
