Melissa went in to the lab that afternoon specifically to show off what had happened to her body.
And she caused quite a scene. Eyes followed her as though magnetized. Various scientists unceremoniously left their work stations and followed Melissa to her office, crowding around her as she slowly eased herself down behind her desk. Her massive belly pressed against the edge of the desk, and Melissa couldn’t have reached her computer keyboard had she tried. She still couldn’t believe how massive she had become.
“My god, Melissa, what is this?” said Dr. Jones, motioning to her form. “It isn’t what I think it is?”
Melissa nodded. “I’m with child,” she confirmed, her hands sliding up to cradle her large, warm belly. “This wasn’t something I was even attempting, but yes—somehow I’ve gotten myself pregnant.”
“That’s amazing,” said Dr. Michaels.
“By now your robotic parts outnumber your organic ones,” said Dr. Claude as he adjusted his glasses. “This is remarkable indeed.”
A smile spread over Melissa’s face. She gazed down at her belly. You hear that? You’re remarkable, she thought, and was answered with flutters of movement that seemed to litter her whole swollen abdomen. “Wow, they’re active,” she breathed.
“They’re? As in plural?” asked Jones.
“Just look at me,” Melissa responded with a wry smile. Her massive belly pushed her breasts towards her chin, and overfilled her lap. The mound was wider than the rest of her, and it began to shiver visibly in places. Melissa twisted her face when she was assaulted with a barrage of tiny kicks. She gingerly rubbed the side of the mound. “I can only assume there is more than one. Several.”
“Multiples,” Claude mused.
“Yes,” said Melissa, her face warming with pride.
A new person entered the room, pushing her way through others. A small woman appeared before Melissa’s desk. It was Dr. Withers, one of the heads at the lab. “This is quite a development, Melissa. We must examine you at once. I want to do your labs, some scans, check your vitals, and run diagnostics. Of course you will also need a physical exam as well as a sonogram…”
Melissa’s smile fell as Withers prattled on. She honestly just wanted to enjoy this, however long it lasted. “Of course,” Melissa cut Withers off. “Of course, doctor. Everything will need to be recorded. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to postpone the exams. I have an errand to run.” It took Melissa a surprising amount of effort to heave herself up from her chair. Everyone seemed to lean back to take in the full extent of her form, her belly heaving up and down from the gentle throbs of her mechanical lungs.
Melissa began to move around the desk, and people scrambled to get out of her way otherwise were pushed aside by her tremendous mound. Melissa found a certain satisfaction in this. She arched and pushed her belly even farther out. She had almost made it to the door, when Wither’s hurried over to occupy the frame, looking so small and overwhelmed, practically straining to peer up into Melissa’s face.
“I really must insist,” said Withers. “You’re already so far along. We’ve missed so much of the development. Please, Melissa.” Withers looked panicked.
“I will return shortly,” said Melissa calmly. “I promise.” With that, she proceeded forward as though Withers was not even there. Withers was practically flung aside when Melissa’s massive abdomen bounced into her.
Melissa was, of course, lying. Integrity had never been a large part of the profession.
She walked towards the exit, head held high, lab techs peering at her over their cubicals, pointing and murmuring.
Melissa got into the elevator and hesitated before opting to go down to the first floor rather than the garage. Her car had been a tight squeeze anyway. Melissa preferred to just walk, which gave her the opportunity to flaunt her curvaceous body even more.
When Melissa got outside, people gasped and pointed. Some froze in place simply to gawk. Though many people who lived or worked in the neighborhood had gotten used to Melissa’s being a cyborg, the new development of her pregnancy was causing quite a stir.
Just smiling at the onlookers or throwing the occasional wave, Melissa cradled her belly with her free hand, feeling it bob gently with her stride. Her body felt so heavy, so full.
A block down, she stopped in front of a baby store, and paused to admire a crib on display in the window. Melissa gave her belly a glance and a sigh, before walking inside.
