Beth adjusted her rectangular glasses.
She was in the second month of her first technician job within the biology lab owned and funded by Garretson Advanced Graduate University. It was a true privilege to work alongside renowned scientists as they ran studies and trials to develop a better understanding of the human body.
"Jennings."
Beth perked at the sound of her last name. She turned to see Dr. Walker motioning her over from where he stood just outside of his office.
"A word?" he said.
Beth pushed her stool back from her microscope and stood up. She peeled off her gloves and washed her hands before marching off to Walker's office, her long blond ponytail wagging against her nape.
Beth was surprised to see two other scientists present when she entered the office. She didn't think she was due for a performance review. "Good afternoon Dr. Walker, Dr. Rian. Dr. Spelding, how are you?" She greeted them individually, shaking hands before taking the one available seat opposite the three of them. She tried to stay cool and collected, and not let her nerves get the best of her.
"Jennings, you've only been here for a short while, but I have to say, excellent work."
Beth practically glowed. "Thank you sir." She hoped she came off calm and cool and not completely exhilarated.
"Now that we're really confident in your capabilities and professionalism, we think it's time to implement your volunteer contract."
Oh right. That silly thing. About a third of the new lab technicians had been hired through a volunteer program. While the other technicians came from wealth families or elite colleges, each of the volunteers was required to partake in at least one non-hazardous experiment, of which they were a subject.
"Yes, I'm very eager," Beth lied, though she hoped she at least sounded enthusiastic. "It should be fascinating to experience a clinical trial from the perspective of a participant."
"Excellent, Jennings," said Walker. "We just have a few more forms for you to sign then we can get started."
-
After signing and initialing what felt like a hundred consent forms—which, to Beth, seemed redundant, as she had already done several consent forms and waivers when she had first been hired under the program—it was decided that she would get started with the experiment right away. Beth agreed, as the sooner she could get this thing started the sooner it would be done and over with, and she could get back to real research.
Beth was taken to a procedure room and instructed to lie across the bed.
"This is nonsurgical, though you may be more comfortable with a sedative and perhaps some local analgesic."
Beth agreed. She wasn't typically one to turn down drugs.
In only half hour, she was floating in the clouds. She could barely focus on the sounds and movements around her. Damn, this is strong.
"Can you feel this?" said a voice close to her ear. She waited for a pinch or prick, a tap or some sort of pressure, but there was nothing. So she shook her head.
"Good," said the voice.
There was more movement and speech, but Beth was in lala land, and at one point she knew she was giggling.
When she came out of it, she was lying alone in the room, blinking up at the ceiling. The lights were off. "How long was I out?" she wondered aloud, rubbing her face.
"Only an hour."
Beth looked up to see Dr. Walker standing by the door, looking over a chart.
"Any soreness? Discomfort?"
"No," said Beth, though she had yet to move, so she wasn't quite sure.
"Then you're free to go Miss Jennings. Take the rest of the day off."
Beth sat up. She actually did feel alright. "Is there anything I should expect, doctor? Side-effects?" She climbed off the bed.
"I'm afraid I cannot say," said Walker scribbling something down, still not looking up. "We do not want to influence any symptoms. Please document and report any potential side-effects you experience."
It made sense. "Understood." Beth honestly would have preferred to stay at work and continue her experiments with the butterfly enzymes, but she knew it was best not to question orders from the scientists. She was in desperate need of some groceries anyway.
So she left.
-
Weeks passed, and Beth had no side-effects to report. She noticed that her body temperature was slightly higher than usual, but that was hardly noteworthy.
She continued with her work routine, enjoying the independence offered by her employers while there were still opportunities for collaboration.
While her research was progressing beautifully, some of Beth's colleagues had hit dead ends with their projects. Between the six month new-hire probationary period and upcoming performance reviews, some technicians were certainly crumbling under the pressure.
Linda was a clear example. The woman's weight had begun to soar in recent weeks. She had gone from a fit, athletic, twenty-eight year old to an objective chubster.
"You headed out to lunch?" Linda called that afternoon, fidgeting in her ill-fitting lab coat.
Beth peeked up from where she was hunched over her microscope. It was where she seemed to spend most of her work hours. Beth shrugged and closed her laptop. She could eat. "I'll drive." Beth grabbed her keys.
-
Beth's bras were tighter now.
It was the first physical change she noticed about herself since the start of the experiment a month earlier.
She had honestly assumed she was part of the control group (were there other subjects to this particular experiment? She assumed there were).
Though her breasts were undoubtedly bloated, Beth was not sure if this was a side-effect. It could have just been hormones or weight gain from one too many taco runs with Linda.
All the same, Beth decided to document it. "March second," she spoke clearly into her recorder. "Vitals remain largely the same. I appear to have experienced minor breast growth, which could be indicative of bloating, inflammation, or weight gain. Will monitor."
-
Her nipples were more sensitive. She noticed it only a few days later, and it was sort of embarrassing. Lately they were erect more often than not. Again she wondered if it was related to the experiment, or if it was something else entirely.
That day, Beth was scheduled for a progress report. After lunch, she met with Walker, Rian, and Spelding in Walker's office. Each of their expressions were carefully neutral.
For the first time, Beth wondered why three of the head scientists at the lab were so involved in the experiment on her, to the point that they would appear at a minor progress report. She wondered if they were this involved with all the technicians in the volunteer program, and if so, where did they find the time? This whole thing seemed inconsequential; secondary to the work that mattered. More specifically, a lesson of empathy for future patients.
"We listened to your recordings," said Spelding. "Very thorough. Excellent work, as usual."
"Thank you," said Beth, too wary to be overly enthused this time around.
"We would like to proceed with a physical exam," said Spelding. "Rian will conduct it, and pass on her findings."
"That's fine," said Beth.
Walker and Spelding exited. Rian checked Beth's vitals and had Beth strip the clothes only from her upper body. The exam was brief, and mostly visual. It was over fast.
"Thank you Jennings," Rian spoke in her usual calm, cool manner. "Please continue to document any changes."
"Yes, doctor," Beth agreed, and left.
-
As time passed, the changes were subtle, but there were changes, indeed.
Her breasts were small but grew increasingly bloated. They were unnaturally full now, and did not droop the way normal breasts did under gravity. Instead they protruded round from her chest. Two full, weighted, B-cups with stiff, sensitive nipples which could no longer fit into her bras yet could hardly tolerate the sensation of her cotton shirts and silk blouses rubbing against them. Beth resolved to try out pasties until things stabilized, at least. No point in investing in new bras if she would just revert to her normal size. It was probably just a temporary reaction, after all.
She tried not to antagonize what was transpiring and avoided most contact with her breasts, but her hands seemed to find them in her sleep. She would wake up clearly groping herself, flesh tingling, nipples aching. It took an alarming amount of effort to withdraw her fingers, at which point she was stare down at the mounds, which were left feeling extraordinarly heated.
One morning Beth awoke to find that she wasn't just groping.
She was...leaking.
Disturbingly, both of her nipples were leaking a transparent fluid that was lazily rolling down the underside of each breast.
Beth hesitated then touched the fluid. It proved gooey and sticky. She wrinkled her nose in disgust of the development. What kind of side-effect is this? she wondered. What are they doing to me?
A closer examination of her breasts revealed a small opening in each nipple. An enlarged pore from which the substance was secreting. "Eugh," she groaned, getting out of bed, wiping away the substance, shivering as the towel snagged on her left nipple.
Her nipples continued to slowly seep. She stared in astonishment when her left nipple began to steadily produce a mass, but then the mass popped, and she realized it to be a bubble. She twisted her face, feeling a bit nauseous.
As embarrassing as this issue was, Beth knew she had to document it. Continuing to frown down at her chest, she retrieved her recorder and turned it on. "April eighth…"
-
The scientists were dismissive of the matter.
"Lactation is a side-effect of many drugs," Walker noted. "It's neither serious nor dangerous."
Beth reddened in frustration. "Yes, though it is rather inconvenient. And what I'm producing is not milk." She sat before them with her blouse and lab coat draped over an ill-fitting bra, within which she had stuffed some tissue to soak up the constant secretion of fluid. She had not been prepared for her issue, and the get-up was decidedly uncomfortable.
"Then it's colostrum," said Rian.
"I'm not sure," Beth admitted. “It…doesn’t look like it.”
"We can take a sample and do a full exam," said Walker.
Beth drew a long, deep breath. "Can I have any insight on why this is occurring? Is something happening with my hormones?"
There was a long pause. Rian and Walker threw a glance to each other.
"I'm afraid we can't disclose anything at this time," said Spelding, and he did not even try to appear remorseful.
-
After another exam, Beth was sent on her way. An order was put in for padded bras, the cost of which would he covered by the organization.
It wasn't much consolation. Beth fidgeted through the work day, enduring the sensation of the gooey substance seeping out of her nipples until her bra felt pasted to her rather than strapped on. It was extremely unpleasant.
She tried to find distractions rather than obsessing and anguishing, however.
Her work continued to be fascinating, the nuances of the butterfly DNA sure to yield something truly innovative.
Like her colleagues, Beth kept her workplace socializing at a minimum, but sometimes it was hard not to notice people.
Linda was getting huge. Was looked like a pig. Beth wasn’t being cruel; Linda was truly starting to look like a sow. Her skin was flushed pink, and she was always panting. The had gotten chubby in general, but a round belly was now jutting out from her torso, plump breasts heaving atop it. And her backside had gotten huge of late.
Despite the weight gain, nothing could seem to quell her voracious appetite.
"Got us shakes from that new spot on the corner," Linda mentioned, handing Beth an extra-large milkshake, body jiggling as she moved.
"Thanks Linda," said Beth in appreciation. She drew a long sip as she returned her attention to her microscope.
-
At home, Beth’s lack of distraction was rather problematic.
Much as she tried to read a book, Beth's attention kept shifting back to her breasts, and the seeping, but also the weird sensation of tension in her nipples. The nubs seemed particularly swollen that evening, the combined arousal and discomfort leaving her flushed and panting.
The mounds were practically throbbing. She feared she was going mad as she watched it occur.
"Nghhhhh..." Her nipples actually trembled, her breast flesh clenching oddly as her body poured sweat. And then, to Beth utter shock, the pore that centered her right nipple began to steadily widen.
