Max watched blankly as his parents and his older brother, Adam, fell into another argument over breakfast that morning.
Ever since his senior year of High School, Adam had started putting on weight. At first their parents had ridden it off as holiday weight, but Adam had gotten bigger and bigger until he was twenty and had a sizable beer belly stretching out his T-shirts.
Max stared at the way Adam's belly bobbed in the college jersey he had it squashed into. It was weirdly round; the perfect shape of a ball. Their parents had taken Adam to see several specialists, but the diagnoses were always the same--fatness.
"I don't see how it's any of your business," Adam shouted at their parents from across the kitchen table.
"Think about your future, Adam!" their mother cried back.
Adam scoffed. He took one more bite of his butter-drenched toast, before he turned and walked off, holding the side of his belly as it bobbed in his top. Max found the whole scene to be bizarre. He chewed some eggs as his parents muttered angrily amongst themselves.
Yes, Adam was undeniably turning into a lardass, but what did their parents care? Max found himself siding with Adam in the belief that Adam was an adult and his weight really wasn't anyone's business but his own. Sure Adam was a disgusting slob, but Max hardly saw why that mattered. Adam kept his grades up and had never committed so much as a parking violation. Their parents should have been counting their lucky stars rather than bitching about Adam's inadequacies.
Sighing and shaking his head, Max got up and pushed the remainder of his meal aside, having lost his appetite by then. He walked outside and strolled through the overgrown yard surrounding the farm house in his usual early morning ritual. Max was eighteen, and as with Adam, it seemed that his whole life had been laid out for him with little input on his part. He was just passing one of the cattle barns when a shuffling noise gave him pause. All of the cows were usually released into the pasture during the day. Max frowned in suspicion. He approached the door, and eased it open, just slightly. Inside was Adam, his backpack flung down on a work bench, as the college student rummaged eagerly through a bag of fertilizer...or was that the growth hormone? Adam's face was completely buried in the canvass bag. Max heard him take a long snort.
The bag dropped to the ground, some puffs of green powder exuding out of it. Adam stood stiffly for a moment, his pupils visibly dilating. He then fell backwards, collapsing on some hay bales as several inches of his flabby stomach bulged out from the taxed hem of his shirt.
Max was astonished. Though Adam's eyes remained slightly open, he was unconscious as far as Max could tell. He's getting high off the hormone, Max thought, with growing disgust of his brother's antics. He quietly closed the barn door and hurriedly off to school, trying to erase Adam's sprawled image from his mind.
And yet Max could not stop thinking about it. He wondered if the hormone was the cause of Adam's localized weight gain. He wondered what kind of high Adam was experiencing--and how any high could even be worth it to blow up as though there was a volleyball under one's shirt.
How had Adam even gotten the idea to start snorting the cattle product? What the hell had he been thinking?
It was pure madness and none of it made sense. No matter how much Max ran the scenario in his head, things just didn't add up.
"Hey, Adam?" Max said after school that day. Adam was slumped back on the living room couch, flipping through the channels on the television while mindlessly shoveling potato chips into his mouth. His round belly sat in his lap. It seemed to shiver slightly.
Adam shifted uncomfortably. "Turd?" he greeted, not looking up. He chomped on a fresh handful of chips.
Max grimaced. He lifted his gaze from Adam's gut. "Is everything...okay with you?" he said awkwardly.
"It was till you showed up," Adam snarked.
"It's just that--you've been acting kinda funny," Max went on.
Adam finally sent a glance his way. "What is this, an intervention?" he spat.
"No, it's just..."
"You're becoming just like mom and dad. You always were such a kiss-ass." Adam struggled slightly as he heaved himself up to his feet. "What are you going to tattle on me for snacking?"
"No, of course n--"
"Get out of here before I kick your ass."
Max felt himself sneer. "Wouldn't that entail catching me?"
"What did you say?"
"Nothing," said Max innocently as he turned to leave.
"That's what I thought," Adam called after him breathlessly. "Take some advice, Max. Mind your business. Or just stay the hell out of mine."
Max walked out of the house, his face flushed in irritation. It was obvious that he would be getting no answers directly from his brother. He found himself walking back to the cattle barn. He looked around and slipped inside.
The barn was now fully populated with the heavily obese cows his parents raised on the farm. The Sturge family was renowned for its quality meat, and provided ninety-five percent of the meat products to the state and the four others that bordered it.
Max gently pushed his way through the moaning inventory, occasionally petting the head of a cow or stroking one's flank. He finally made his way to the back of the barn, and the cabinet housing the feed, treatments, hormones, and other cow-rearing products. He wrenched it open, his eyes automatically darting to a low shelf and the sack of growth hormone Adam's face had been literally buried in that morning.
Max crouched down and gingerly undid the drawstring. He dipped his pointer finger into the bag, withdrawing a thin trail of green powder which he held as far away from his face as possible. He stared at the innocuous-looking chemical for a while, and the tiny iridescence crystals that seemed to litter it. Finally, he brought his finger within two inches of his nostrils, and took a weak, short, smell of the substance.
The world tilted, crashed, then tumbled forcefully. He felt as though he'd made the goal, kissed the girl, and cured death all at once, and everyone adored him. He experienced an almost sexual release, and a rush that lit his skin aflame. It tasted like soft, buttery chocolate, as it invaded all his senses and oozed from his pores, accompanied by the sweetest song, the softest moans, and the most beautiful things he'd ever seen.
When he came to, his skin was wet and tingly, his head buzzing, and his heart racing. He raised his fingers to stare at the residual green powder, and was almost tempted to lick it, but somehow he stopped himself. "Oh my god," he said hoarsely. This was insane. It was-- It couldn't be kept to himself.
Max didn't know how long he had been unconscious, but when he pushed his way out of the barn, the sky was dark.
He collapsed to his usual seat at the kitchen table, hardly aware that he had missed the first half of dinner. Across the table, Adam peered at him with a suspicion look.
"Where have you been?" his mother asked, plucking a piece of hay off his sweatshirt. "You're a mess."
"Just took a walk," said Max as he shoveled mashed potatoes into his mouth. He was starved.
"At least one of our sons is interested in exercise," said their father pointedly.
Adam rolled his eyes.
Max hardly noticed the conversation that followed. He couldn't stop thinking about the powdery green hormone. Even the lingering remnants of the high were enough to keep him occupied. One of his hands unconsciously slid up to his chest, his fingers pressing tenderly into his left pec, and he could barely restrain a groan at the warm tingling sensation this roused. His jaw slackened and his eyelids fluttered.
"You okay Maxy?"
Max was startled out of his reverie. He dropped his arm and looked around to see that both his brother and father had already vacated the table, his mother standing to collect dishes.
"Yeah," he mumbled as he hastily shoveled down the rest of his meal. With that he left.
-
The first thing Max did after he excused himself to his bedroom was get his two best friends, Scott and Simon, on a three-way call.
"Guys, you wouldn't believe the high I just experienced. Best shit I've had in my life. Shut up Simon--I knew you wouldn't believe me. Come over and try it yourself." A pause. "Fine, tomorrow after school. Just bring some spare underwear." He snorted and hung up.
-
Max was impatiently tapping his foot throughout his final class period the following day. When the bell finally rang, he didn't even bother to look for his two friends. He simply went outside, got on his bike, and rode back to his parents' farm. If Scott and Simon didn't take the proffered bait, it was their loss. More for me, Max decided.
In only minutes, he was unceremoniously dumping his bike by the gate, walking through the cornstalks, and checking out the barn. Thankfully no one was around, not even Adam. Max pushed his way into the barn and headed straight for the cabinet in the back. He reached inside and pulled out the heavy sack or growth hormone, his hands trembling slightly as he stared down at it. His pulse raced. He couldn't wait. He began to carefully untie the drawstring.
The barn door banged open. "What's this about Maxy-Max," said Simon as he walked inside, Scott following. "Don't tell me you're getting high on cat piss again."
"Fuck off." Max turned his attention to his friends. One of his hands absently slid up to rub his chest through his T-shirt.
"Seriously, what is that?" said Scott, looking amused. He nodded to the sack still clutched in Max's grip.
Max hesitated. "Try it first," he suggested.
Simon broke into chortles. "Now I know this is bad."
"Adam's been doing it for ages, and he's still alive, isn't he?" Max argued. "It's just some dumb chemical we use in the cow feed. If you're not interested, it your loss. But I know how I'll be spending my afternoon." Max was practically salivating at the thought of it.
"You're really serious about this stuff," said Scott in intrigue.
"Fuck yeah I am. Best high of my life. And it helps to have my own personal test dummy." Max waddled in place, indicating his brother's hefty frame. The other two sniggered.
"Fine, I'll try it," said Scott. "Just a pinch."
"Give me a full dose," said Simon.
"Still kind of establishing that," said Max as he opened the bag. "Just get some on the tip of your finger and take a whiff. Be careful. This stuff is strong."
Max first waited for his friends to get a sample of the green powder each, before he lowered the sack to the floor and took a bit for himself. "Ready?"
The others nodded.
"Alright. Three...two...on--"
-
When they came to, they were all sprawled on the hay-strewn floor, and Max was not surprised to see that he had come in his pants.
Simon was already out of it but Scott seemed in a daze.
"Christ," said Simon shakily. "You weren't fucking around."
Max just shook his head as he struggled to catch his breath.
After getting themselves off the ground, Max and Simon tried to rouse Scott, who blinked up at them in confusion a few times. "Fuck," he hissed.
"I know," Max agreed.
"Max, that was--that was more than a high. That was fucking insane."
"I don't care what it was. It felt good," said Simon, licking the residual hormone off his finger. His body went stiff and he shuddered a few times.
Max rolled his eyes. "What did I tell you guys," he said as he took off his sweatshirt and wrapped it around his waist.
"Max, you can't keep this to yourself." Scott's words were frenzied. "You have to share. I need mo"
"Let's pace ourselves," said Max. He felt like he had much better control after doing the drug the second time. "And of course I'll share. But this shit's too strong to do twice in one day. And my parents might get suspicious if you two are hanging out all night and half their supply has disappeared."
"Then when?" Scott entreated. Simon was still in a catatonic stupor.
"Same time we always let loose," said Max lightly. "After school."
