Though the grapefruit broke down in Sarahs stomach in just a few days, some mornings when Sarah woke up her belly felt tight and uncomfortable. She did not know why. It almost felt as though the tail had eaten another whole thing, though Sarah knew that she kept it well-controlled and under close watch every day.
Sarah felt bloated most of the time now, though it was not significant enough that it made a visible difference when she was clothed.
Despite it, Sarah found that she had mostly lost her appetite during meal times. All day she found herself craving food, and yet she had no actual interest in eating when a plate sat in front of her during dinner with her family. Instead, Sarah would sit there, shuffling food around while trying to keep the tail at bay as it twitched where it was wrapped around her waist.
Despite Sarahs disinterest in eating, her parents werent too concerned. After all, Sarah had gained nearly twenty pounds since she had arrived home some weeks before, back when she had been malnourished and frail-looking. Now when Sarah looked in the mirror, she could see that her face was no longer narrow, her cheeks not hollowed out as they had been before. She looked stronger and healthier. That much was certain.
The tail was slowly, subtly, getting longer, and a little bit thicker. Sarah was doing better at controlling it, and had even succeeded at grocery shopping without the tail getting out of line.
Life stabilized, but also became a little mundane. Besides the tail, nothing else was changing for Sarah. Her parents had become overprotective, for good reason, and hardly wanted Sarah travelling a block or two from the housejust far enough to run the more basic errands and feel somewhat productive. Aside from that, most of Sarahs time was spent in the house, and she was beginning to get sedentary.
One day when Sarahs parents were at work, Sarah made herself a large bowl of macaroni and cheese. It had been a childhood favorite. Though she didnt really feel like eating, she tried to force herself to. But instead, Sarah just found herself sitting at the kitchen table, endlessly stirring the meal, sort of playing with it. Though Sarah deeply craved the foodeven felt hungryfor some reason she had no desire to place it into her mouth. And now it was getting cold. Sarah sighed, becoming resigned. As her body sagged, the tail began to unfurl. Sarah tensed, and focused, and the tail actually froze mid-air, on the verge of diving for the bowl.
Now Sarah found herself salivating. She didnt know why, but she relaxed again, allowing the tail to plunge into the bowl and suck the food up. Sarah pressed her lips and closed her eyes, her body shuddering as the macaroni was pumped into her stomach. When the tail had finished, it swayed proudly, dripping goey cheese as Sarah gasped for breath. She felt satisfied, even full. But then she couldnt help herself. She climbed to her feet and walked to the stove, where the remainder of the macaroni was cooling in a large pot. Sarah gripped onto the counter as the tail dove in.

Sarah was definitely looking bloated now. The tails form of eating wasnt easy on her digestive system.
Over the next few days, Sarah continued to allow the tail to eat here and there, on average one meal a day. And yet it still seemed ravenous. It wanted more.
One afternoon, Sarah tore open a bag of chocolate truffles she had bought at the convenience store that morning when she had been picking up stamps for her mother. Sarah unwrapped one, and examined it in the palm of her hand. The tail danced around her, restless but restrained. It seemed better behaved the better it was fed. Sarah couldnt help chuckling. Go ahead, she said, offering the truffle. The tail sucked it down, Sarahs eyes rolling upwards as the sweet, decadent gourmet chocolate pushed up the length of the tail and into her stomach. Sarah pulled out another truffle. Consider it a treat, she said, as she unwrapped it and delivered it to the tail.
There was a knock on the door, giving Sarah pause. Despite the evocative sensation of the second piece of chocolate pulsing through her, she managed to stand, the tail automatically wrapping around her waist. Sarah smoothed her clothes and answered the door. Hi mom, I left the stamps on
I saw them, thanks sweetie, Tammy answered. I hate to see you cooped up here on a Saturday. Why dont you come with me to visit your Aunt Beth?
Visiting her aunts farm was the last thing Sarah wanted to do. Sure, she said. Let me just get organized. Sarah also knew that if she was resistant to her mother, the womans rate of pestering her would multiply. Her mother didnt want her straying too far from the house, and yet she didnt want her cooped up all day. Making Sarah visit family was a logical medium.
Tammy beamed. Meet you downstairs.
Sarah closed the door then leaned against it, taking a few moments to cool down. The tail stayed put at her waist, content as could be. Her heart rate steadied.
Sarah stuffed her feet into some shoes, then paused at her mirror. She was wearing some leggings and a T-shirt, her small belly stretching the material somewhat. Sarah frowned at this. She probably shouldnt have been enabling the tail by allowing it to feed. And she probably should have been giving herself more time to digest food before allowing the tail to pile more on. After all, the tail consumed things whole, not broken down by chewing.
Ill worry about this later, Sarah decided, as she exited her bedroom and went downstairs.
The ride to the farm was only a half hour.
At seeing Sarah, Aunt Beth didnt even embrace her, she just patted her head with one of those calloused hands of hers, as if to remind Sarah that she was still quite short. And then she gave Sarah a once-over.
You put on some weight, Beth noted, causing Sarah to redden.
It took a little while, Tammy piped in with a smile. But shes finally keeping it on.
Beth nodded, then turned around. Sarah, let me show you some of the renovations you might have missed.
With that, Sarah found herself walking through familiar fields of corn stalks and vegetables, the odor of maneuver drifting over from the barn. Beth was giving them an informal tour, mostly for Sarahs sake, though not much had changed over the course of the year.
And those are my new shutters. Dont you love them, Tam? Beth was saying.
I like the color. It brings out the flower box. The sisters yammered on.
Sarah trailed after them, bored and unable to evade the faint preoccupation with food lingering in her conscience. She tried to shake it off. She was becoming obsessive. Thankfully, the tail was not a twitch out of line. Sarah was relieved that she could relax a bit.
Beth was still enthusiastically talking with Tammy. She took a lot of pride in her farm. She was a hands-on, self-made woman. At present she was discussing a new breed of cow shed had imported from Romania. Sarah forced a smile or nodded on the occasions that Beth glanced back at her. But then she ducked off.
Sarah remembered the farm quite well. She had spent of lot of time running around it as a kid. She soon found herself wandering into the hen house. She had always found the chickens to be entertaining. Sarah stood back as they clucked and paced about arbitrarily behind their containment fence. There was a row of chicks trailing after one of the hens. Sarah leaned closer, when suddenly, the tail unfurled.
Sarahs eyes widened as the tail dove into the large bin of eggs beneath the coup. The dimple widened, and the tail began to suck the eggs down whole. Sarah was quickly overwhelmed by the endless flow of items invading her. She tried to stagger away, but then the first of the eggs pumped into her stomach, quickly followed by a second. Sarahs face flushed as her belly tightened. She sunk to her knees, then hit all fours, as she felt the tail expeditiously suck up several more eggs.
The door creaked, and the tail suddenly swung back around Sarahs waist, disappearing beneath her T-shirt. Her forehead sleek with sweat, Sarah looked up to see her mother and aunt strolling in.
And if you see the output, Tammy, these chickens are reallywhawhat happened to my eggs? Theres a good dozen missing! Damn weasels! Beth clenched her fists, then belatedly noticed Sarah hunched on the ground. Sarah? What happened?
Tammy hurried over to help her up.
Nothing, said Sarah weakly, managing to stand. Eggs were still pushing into her belly from the tail, and she struggled to maintain a neutral expression. Imm mmmm j-just a little dizzy. The feeding finished, thank goodness. She tried not to look at or direct attention to her stomach, just hoping that she didnt look as bloated as she felt. She forced a smile as she wiped some sweat off her brow.
Shame on me for keeping you out in the hot sun all day, said Beth, brushing some dust off Sarahs shoulder. Why dont we head to the barn? Did I ever teach you show to churn butter?
No! said Sarah quickly. The tail twitched, but she managed to keep it in place. Not a good idea. I mean um Now Beth and Tammy were staring at her. I just need to sit down for a bit. I think Ill head inside.
Beth nodded, looking sympathetic. Suzies playing in the living room. Well be over in a bit.
Sarah nodded. From the corner of her eye, she saw her mother and aunts reassuring smiles morph to frowns of concern as she walked towards the house on the opposite side of the property.
