I just need you to feed them, andand maybe bring out the heat lamps, said Jack. He was jittery from fatigue. He averted his eyes from Dean and Mindys questioning looks. Please dont ask, he entreated. He felt sore and exhausted, and was strangely unbalanced. He felt bereft of a constant presence within him. Cool and empty.
Jack Mindy started, looking uncharacteristically dour. This was, after all, incredibly suspicious. She frowned down at the squirming pile of newborn puppies. How did these get in here? Where did they even come from? Andand your body
I, um, Jack cut her off, throwing one last glance at the litter. He was glad that the puppies werent malnourished and unhealthy as the kittens had been, even if he had had to blow up like a whale to make it happen. I have to go, he said, walking out of the meeting room. He self-consciously tugged down his shirt. He should have worn a pillow or something beneath it to mitigate the profoundness of his abruptly changed physique. Im taking a sick day. Just reroute my calls.
Not waiting for a response, Jack walked out of the shop. He climbed into his car, locked the doors, then rested his head against his steering wheel.
He should have been happy. The puppies meant a new wave of profits. He just couldnt get over the stunning fact that they hadnt been kittens but puppiesthough there wasnt anything inherently wrong with that. There was also the trauma of the birth, Dean and Mindys suspicions, the fact that a potential investor had actually caught sight of him in his bloated stateit was all very overwhelming.
There was the odd emotional emptiness he felt now that he wasntpregnantanymore, even though he should have been celebrating. There was the fear of what the two pregnancies could mean. That magic was real, and he was its defenseless victim.
Jack drew a long, ragged breath, before finally starting his car. He pulled out of the parking lot and drove home, not without stopping at the local fast food joint for some burgers.
Feeling more ravenous than weary, Jack pulled into his driveway and scarfed the burgers down, right there in his car. Then, on his final wisps of energy, he went into his house, collapsed to bed, and fell asleep.
-
When Jack awoke, his alarm clock was blaring jarringly. A quick glance at the time told Jack that he had slept through it by hours. He hadnt realized how truly exhausted he had been.
Jack sat up and turned it off, grimacing at how sore he still felt. He lifted his cellphone, and was alarmed to see that he had missed twenty-three calls, and had thirteen messages, the majority of them from the store. Jack quickly called back.
Hello? said Mindy breathlessly.
Mindy, whats going on? said Jack groggily. He rubbed his chest, and winced.
The puppies, she said, her voice tinged with frustration. All forty-six of them
Forty-six!? said Jack in shock.
Mindy was silent for a moment. Yes. You didnt know?
Of course, Jack managed. Iwhats going on? Whats wrong with them? His heart sunk though he wasnt sure why.
Theyre refusing the bottled milk, Mindy said. Every one of them, and I dont know why. I imagine they miss their mother. And Jack, Id love to have a word with this breeder of yours. Dropping off so many puppies before they can even survive on their own
Keep trying with the bottles, said Jack, already getting out of his bed and looking for his uniform.
Jack Mindy choked. I dont think theyre going to make it through the night.
Ishit Jacks mind was spinning.
I tried calling the local breeders to see if they had any nursing mothers available. Obviously, its a steep request. Im going to reach out to the surrounding towns to see if
Right, stay on that, said Jack, as he jerked on his pants. Ill be there as soon as I can. And he hung up.
Jack held up his shirt, hesitated, then frowned down at his chest. He approached his mirror and nearly cringed at his reflection. He had two pairs of A-cup breasts on his chest, all four looking bloated and puffy, swollen halfway to Bs. All four nipples were a dark pink, swollen, and dripping continuously. He knew if he pulled on the shirt it would be dampened in seconds.
Jack leaned down to the top drawer of his dresser, grimacing at the sensation of the mounds jiggling slightly. He grabbed some athletic tape and walked into the bathroom, where he again folded layers of toilet paper into thick squares, which he held to each nipple, before awkwardly adhering it with the athletic tape.
When he finished, Jack stared at himself to realize, uneasily, that he had produced a crass sort of bra.
His eyes slid down to his stomach, which was still somewhat soft and bloated. Frowning to himself, Jack returned to his bedroom and pulled on the shirt.
He sped to the store in only moments and walked inside, arms awkwardly crossed over his ribs. He passed Dean, who was ringing up a customer, to walk straight into the meeting room where Mindy was crouched down with the pile of puppies which were now evenly distributed to two dog beds. Three heaters had been brought into the room, making it uncomfortably warm. The puppies were squirming feebly, the ones who werent sleeping whimpering or squeaking in a way that made Jacks chest throb.
Youre here, Mindy said, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. She was holding a puppy bottle, and had been abortively attempting to get one of the infant dogs to latch on. There was a whole clutter of puppy bottles there, set upright in a tray of steaming water.
Yeah, said Jack weakly. Why dont you take a break? Ill give it a shot.
Ill make some more calls. Mindy forced a smile as she straightened and walked off.
Jack saw Mindy go to the register where she muttered something to Dean. The two glanced back at the meeting room to look at Jack, worry evident on their faces. Jack gave a pained smile and gently closed the door.
He sat down beside the dog beds, legs crossed. He lifted one of the puppy bottles, and gingerly lifted one of the dogs. He held it close and tried to urge it to drink, but the puppy refused the bottle. Instead it stuffed its pink little snout into his shirt and began to wriggle fervidly.
Jack gulped. He had been dreading this.
Knowing that it was a matter of life and death, and also a matter of potentially losing valuable inventory, Jack pulled off his shirt. Wincing, he peeled the athletic tape away from his chest, allowing the damp padding and the tape to fall to the ground, to leave his awkwardly swollen breasts and protruding nipples on display.
The puppy in his hands hoarsely squealed in a manner that was almost painful to Jack, his chest aching. He held the puppy to his nipple, wincing when it immediately latched on. Jack slowly reclined himself supine on the stiff carpeting. He breathed, and took a moment to get used to the sensation of nursing, before reaching down and lifting another puppy to settle against his opposite nipple.
Jack repeated this two more times until all four of his nipples were occupied by four mouths. Now the other forty-two puppies were whimpering and quivering, and Jack felt frustrated by his inadequacy; the fact that he had been sleeping while they were starving, that he couldnt properly nurture them because he only had four nipples.
Feh he scoffed, holding his head as the four puppies continued to nurse. He had never thought his lack of nipples would suddenly be an issue for him, though stranger things had happened. Then again, probably not.
Im sorry, he murmured, resenting himself as he detached the first puppy, the creature squealing in protest. Jack settled it back into a dog bed, instead lifting a creature that had not nursed yet. He repeated the process with the other nipples, giving each puppy three minutes or so, before starting over. He developed a strategy, using the dog beds to sort them out into the puppies that had fed recently and the ones who had not. Before long, an hour had passed, and though all the puppies had been fed, not one of them seemed satisfied. He extended the time per nipple to five minutes. The room was gradually darkening, the sun setting outside, and he was stuck on the ground, producing meal for the animals.
There was a light knock on the door. Jack? said Mindy. The door creaked open.
Waitstop! Jack shouted, his heart in his throat. Thankfully, Mindy didnt open the door any farther, and Jack was baffled that he had forgotten about his employees and the store. I think its the cold, he said feebly. The cool air seems to be bothering them. Ive had some success with feeding them, but we need to keep this door closed. He knew it was a shoddy excuse, but Mindy tended to ere on the gullible side.
Im glad to hear, she said. He heard her inhale deeply, the door still open just an inch. Can I help at all? I can slip right in.
I think a second person at this point might make them uncomfortable, Jack lied, wincing as the puppy on his lower right breast nipped at him. Ive got this under control, Mindy. Ill see you in the morning.
Mindy hesitated for a moment, before finally, thankfully, closing the door. Her words were muffled as she said, Okay, well me and Dean are going to close up. Thanks so much, Jack.
Thank you! Jack called back. He sighed in relief as he heard her steps trail away.
-
Jack was exhausted.
He found that if he squeezed his eyes shut, he could pretend that none of this was happening to him.
Though generally not a fan of animals, Jack was educated about breeding well enough to know that newborn puppies ate continuously. When they werent sleeping, they were feeding. He had already been sprawled there for hours, and this was quickly becoming a full-time (overtime?) job in itself.
Jack supposed that he could take the puppies back to his apartment. As busy as he was running the shop, he might have to take a few days off.
He had attempted to ease some of the drowsier puppies onto the bottles, and had found some success, to his relief. As he got them all sated, and accustomed to nursing, he could slowly acclimate them to the bottles one by one. And if that presented an issue, he could even try filling the bottles with his milk. Jack wrinkled his nose at the thought of milking himself. Every day of this magical breeding seemed to pull him deeper into a madness he could not easily get out of. But if he really had to, he could get one of those maternity breast pumps, andeugh, it was all so disgusting. Even as he lay there, at the shop, in the middle of the night, his chest felt hot, tender, and somehow bloated as well. He was not sure how his body kept up with the constant demand for milk, but his breasts certainly felt fuller on the occasions he uneasily cupped one against his palm. He feared they were swelling to accommodate more milk and more nursing.
There was suddenly a knocking noise that pulled Jack from his thoughts. It sounded as though it was coming from the front door, which was odd, because it was two in the morning, and the shop was decidedly closed.
Jack shut his eyes and tried to ignore it, but the knocking only intensified, until someone was absolutely pounding on the entrance.
It drove Jack anxious. He wondered if it was the cops. Would they arrest him? What would he be charged with? He was sure there was a crime somewhere in the black hole of freakishness he had recently buried himself in.
What if it wasnt the cops, but someone trying to break in? That seemed even likelier, considering there was no reason for anyone to know that Jack was still at the store.
Jack hastily detached the four puppies presently nursing from him, ignoring their squeals as he settled them into the dog beds. Thankfully, the majority of the puppies were sleeping and wouldnt be roused by their fitful siblings. If someone was breaking in, Jack at least wanted to be composed.
As he got up, his chest felt heavy and awkward as it rocked slightly. Jack impatiently pulled on his shirt, and hissed at the sensation of the material dragging on his swollen nipples.
Grabbing a metal bat from behind the register, Jack crept to the front door and flung it open.
When he saw who it was, he was so surprised, he dropped the bat, and let his arms hang, his small breasts protruding in the front of his shirt.
It was Mr. Benette. The young potential investor who had sighted his form just before the puppies were born.
