Her parents were in shock. W-we wanted to surprise you, her mother stammered.
Holding her lower belly, Laura slowly eased herself down on the living room couch.
She was certainly surprised.
Still flushed, she breathed deeply, and gently rubbed circles on her belly. The group was now seated around the living room, Laura doing her best to stay calm as her belly tensed in short bursts, pressure shooting to her hips. She was so full, she felt like babies might just start popping out.
The triplets were staring up at Laura in awe. Laura was equally awed. They are almost two now, and she hadnt seen them in some time.
Lauras father stood. Laura, what is the meaning of this!? he demanded.
Laura sucked in a deep breath, then puffed it out. She forced a grin despite the beads of sweat that littered her flushed face. Mom, dad, Imp-pregnant.
They responded with silence. She supposed it was fairly obvious. One of the triplets crept forward and began to poke at her mass.
The girls were gorgeous, like Derek, with his dark hair and perfect skin. Laura missed them so much, it stirred tension within her. She continued to patiently breathe in and out.
Whose? Lauras mother asked weakly.
Laura looked down, smoothing her apron against her mass. G-guys she stammered.
Is it Dereks?
Laura felt her face redden more. She pressed her lips and said nothing.
For the love of god, Laura! snapped her father.
Lauras heart pounded.
What are you doing to yourself?
Now Laura was lactating, continuing to puff out her long, deep breaths. Her mother got up and started fretting over her. She went to her side and started adjusting the pillows at her back.
Look at her, honey, she said to her husband. She looks ready to burst. Is Derek
is Derek making you carry them past term again? she asked Laura.
Laura shook her head. No, theresm-multiples.
Her mother covered her mouth.
Now her father was pacing. I thought that bastard was still in jail.
He is, said Laura weakly.
Both her parents paused to stare at her.
Then how? said her mother blankly.
Her shoulders trembling, Laura covered her face with her hands. Oh god, she groaned, her eyes tearing. Dont make me say it.
Her fathers face flushed in anger. Conjugal visits? Do you mean to say you did this to yourself!?
Mommy? A small voice broke the tension.
Laura was grateful, and latched on to it. Violet? she responded, with a smile. She struggled not to cry.
Why is your tummy so big? the child gazed up at it, seeming intimidated by the mass.
Laura reached out to her daughter, and took her hand. She gently guided Violet to her side so that she could squarely look at her, without impediment. I guess its because Im
um
growing your brothers and sisters in here.
Brothers and sisters? Violets eyes lit up.
Laura nodded. F-five.
Five!? the others all repeated, the triplets in excitement, and Lauras parents in horror.
Yes mom, dad, Im carrying quints, said Laura. And Im entirely happy, she lied, still fully embarrassed by her predicament. In fact, Derek and I are t-thrilled.
Laura, listen to yourself. Youre defending him now, said Lauras mother. Let me take you to see a therapist.
Laura shook her head. Mom, hes not that bad anymore. He might even qualify for early release! As Laura said this, her belly trembled, and she clutched it, reddening, breathing in and out. Oh god
not now
she grunted, pressure shooting to her plump hips. She wasnt at term, but she feared she couldnt contain them much longer.
Mrs. Mathers covered her mouth, and the room fell silent, everyone watching and waiting as Lauras body slowly calmed down.
Were stressing you out, said Lauras mother tearfully. We should go.
Laura nodded. I think that may be for the best.
Her parents stood and began to gather up the girls.
Bye mommy. The triplets waved.
Laura smiled and nodded back, and offered them her love. She waited until all five of her family members had walked out, the door closed securely behind them, before she brought her face to her hands and allowed herself to bawl.
-
Laura was acutely aware of the fact that she was in no condition to take care of her girls. It gave her all the more incentive to get through this pregnancy. Get it over with. Carry the babies to term, birth them healthily, and put this behind her so that she and her children could move on.
Im getting close, Laura alluded on the speaker phone as she absently rubbed her bottom.
Derek scoffed back. Youre not even at term. He almost sounded offended.
Derek! Laura snapped, but then she halted her next words. She closed her eyes and tried to calm down, now rubbing circles on her abdomen. Look Derek, my doctors say theyre strong. Strong enough for an early delivery. I know you want to see me before I give birth, but
One more week, said Derek.
Laura blinked.
I wanted to surprise you, Derek continued nonchalantly. But Im getting out soon. I want to be there for you, Laura. I want to do things right this time.
Laura almost believed him.
What harm is another week, Laura?
Laura stared off. Fine. She whispered.
There was a moment of silence between them, but Laura could hear the pleasure in Dereks next words: How are you?
Laura knew what that meant. Derek wanted some form of description. Like the surveillance wasnt enough. Laura looked down at herself. She was presently leaning her hands on the kitchen counter, her back straining and demanding that she take a seat. But Lauras casserole in the oven was almost done, and she couldnt handle the idea of settling down just to heave her massive body up again. I feel like my bellys bigger than I am, Laura managed. Its like a fucking bolder, Derek. I dont know how much longer Im going to be mobile.
One week, Derek reassured her, the pleasure in his voice only seeming to grow.
Laura nodded, trying to ignore her massive, heaving ball of a mound, how it was wider than she was, and bulging out before her by more than two feet. Laura thanked the gods real and imaginary when the oven timer went off.
Youre cooking? Derek sounded amused.
Just to
keep
occupied, Laura strained as she waddled to the oven.
You always knew how I liked thembarefoot and pregnant. My perfect little housewife. Cleaning, cooking, keeping up with the chores.
Just to keep occupied, Laura reiterated as she blushed. Though she wasnt sure if it was true. She was pregnant to bursting and straining herself over casserole. She vaguely wondered what had gone wrong.
Times up, Derek muttered. Soon, love. Lauras heart clenched, and Derek hung up.
-
It was a long and terrible week for Laura. She had hit her due date, and she felt on edge. Every time the phone or doorbell rang, her belly surged with tension and the babies squirmed for release. But interestingly, she did not go into labor. Instead, she tightened and swelled, and continued to anticipate Derek, but he did not arrive. On the eighth day, Laura answered the phone, and she was truly relieved by who it was.
Laura. Dereks voice was cool as ever.
Derek! Lauras face flushed, but she tried to remain calm. Where
are you? she forced out. You saidyou said a week. Hahhh
hahhhh
She panted.
Dont get too worked up, said Derek indifferently. There was a slight
set-back. Its going to be another seven days.
Seven days!? Laura clamped her jaw, feeling her hips twinge. Derek these are quints. My body cant carry them any l-longer. Im either going to drop or bursteither or. They wriggled and she contained a moan.
I know, love, but I need you to hold out just a little longer. I know you have it in you.
There was that word again. Love. Lauras cheeks burned. This is ridiculous, she gasped.
Laura
But Laura didnt want to hear anymore of it. She hung up the phone, leaned back, and groaned.
Her belly was a massive, heaving ball, perched in her lap, pushing up against the dripping EE-cups on her chest. Lauras entire body was soaked in sweat. She ran her hands through her hair, just trying to catch her breath. Her phone started ringing again, and Laura lifted it to her face. It was the hospital. Reluctantly, she pressed Accept. H-hello?
Laura? Is this Laura Mathers?
Yes.
Laura, this is your OBGYN. You missed your appointment, and Im getting concerned.
Lauras breasts were throbbing. I decided to wait a bit longer
Laura, said the doctor with disapproval. You are past due with quints. Large quints. Your body cannot support them any longer. In fact, I advised you to deliver weeks ago.
I know, doctor, Im j-just not ready.
I know youre anxious, Laura, the doctor continued. Its natural. Youre a single parent after all. But your body may be on the brink of collapse. I would recommend an emergency C-section. Think of the babies.
But I
Laura swallowed. She tried to remember what was important. Can you put me in for Friday? she said weakly.
The doctor agreed.
Friday was five days from then. That gave Laura ample time to speak to Derek, and apologize. For all she knew, Derek was just stringing her along, hoping to get her stuffed to the point of cryinglike last time. Laura wasnt willing to go through with that again.
By Friday, Laura could barely feel her legs beneath her. She staggered, and wondered if it would have been smart to request an aide. She heard a car horn outside, and made her way to the door with her throbbing mass, walking slowly, until she could see her cab through the window. She reached for her jacket, jittery. Her hips ached and her back throbbed.
To Lauras surprise, the rear door opened, and a man stepped out of the car.
Derek.
Laura stared at him in shock. She opened the door, feeling on the brink of collapse, when Derek hurried over to her, supported her, and rubbed his hands all over her baby-mound.
Im so glad I made it, Derek smirked, and kissed her. Laura felt in a state of bliss.
Then Derek wrapped his arm around Lauras waist and began to help her back into the house. In the meantime, the cab sped off.
