The bee abdomen was developing parallel ridges, arbitrarily reminding Connor of a tied pork brisket. It was even more orange than before, no longer subtle, but a definite orange color, and every opposite bloat of skin showed signs of darkening, to black, like a true bees abdomen, albeit fatty and smooth in composition.
Connor watched Jakes body throb and pump in an endless cycle. It made him wonder what would have happened to Ryan had he been allowed the nutrients necessary to develop, and survive, as Jake had been. What kind of world would they all be living in?
The other scientists were still running tests.
As I suspected, we cant remove the bee abdomen, Mason deduced, regretfully. Its already developed several major arteries. We have to consider an alternative treatment.
Sprawled on his side on the impromptu medical table they had set up for his vast dimensions, Jakes body quavered slightly. I need need to give someone else power to make my medical decisions. The the paperwork, he groaned out, his large eyes looking foggy.
Its alright, Connor told him in soothing tones. Connor proceeded with the sonogram of Jakes belly. He could detect the frequent twitches of Jakes offspring beneath the device.
Connor stiffened when Jake suddenly gripped his wrist, the scientists clawed fingers sinking slight into his skin.
You, Jake forced out. He looked as though he was struggling to get out his words.
Connor bit the inside of his cheek in uncertainty. Finally, he nodded. It was the least he could do. The entire situation was unprecedented, and no one knew how things would turn out.
Jake released his wrist, and look heaving breaths. Connor hurried off to get the paperwork.
When Connor returned, Mason was pointing out things on a diagram as the other scientists watched, and nodded, all of them looking terrified. Jakes eyes were squeezed shut, and his face was contorted in a permanent grimace of discomfort. Connor worried that he would have to start birthing again soon.
Connor hurried to Jakes side, and placed a pen in his hand. Here. Just sign this line, he said, as Jake opened his onyx eyes. Jake stared at him eerily for a moment, then directed his attention to the clipboard Connor was holding out to him.
Jake scribbled, with clumsy fingers, what Connor hoped would pass as his signature if it was brought to court. Jake then dropped himself again, his body heaving, nipples seeping honey, as his belly rose up and down almost violently. His grimace returned and he whimpered.
Are you holding them in? said Connor, fascinated.
Jake nodded jerkily.
a simple vasectomy, Mason was saying, still pointing out figures on his rather obscene, hastily-drawn, diagram. As you can see, the subjects genitalia, though augmented, has not been significantly changed or obscured by his developments. The vas deferens is still accessible, at least for the time being. We should proceed quickly. It is a simple enough procedure, and will block off sperm access to the abnormal sac, and prevent further pregnancies.
Mason finally directed his attention from his colleagues to his patient. He awkwardly cleared his throat. Jake, this is your best option, considering the gravity of your condition. We can tackle your more cosmetic issues, later, he added inelegantly. Are you on board?
Jake was breathing heavily. He looked crazed, and was perhaps vacillating between a perpetual need to reproduceas it had been with Ryan, and as it was often seen with Jakeand his more lucid, more pragmatic compulsions to halt his bodys ceaseless cycle of reproduction before it was too late.
For a fleeting instant, Connor wondered if Jake would vehemently protest the proposal.
Fine, Jake forced out, looking flushed and practically choking on the word.
Mason gave a nod. The procedure usually only requires a local anesthetic, however it may be best to put you under completely.
A hiss escaped Jakes throat, causing the surrounding scientists to recoil. Jakes belly heaved forcefully, and he gripped at it, breathless and sweaty. Agreed, Jake managed, as his navel bobbed. He was straining; struggling to calm his body down. He closed his eyes, as if trying not to think about the proposition. Just hurry, he croaked.
Mason nodded, and he and the other scientists hurried to get to work. As Rick prepped the anesthetic, Eugene set up the surgical tools, and Mason visited his diagram one last time.
Connor held Jakes hand, allowing Jake to squeeze his, as Diane conducted one more physical exam.
Dianes hand were tremulous as she took Jakes vitals, then examined his bee-abdomen, his stinger seeming to tense and tighten, but not forming that needle-sharp pin from earlier. Instead it puffed out again. He looked on the verge of birthing.
Finally Diane moved on to his belly, which was huge, and heaving, and alive with movement. She worked her hands gently along his mass as Jake clenched his jaw, struggling not to hiss and snarl. When Dianes hand cupped the subtle bulge where the underside of Jakes belly met his torsothe sperm sacJakes eyes opened wide and he released a choked cry. His belly tightened even more, his large navel tensing, before Jake hunched forward and proceeded to vomit a black blob, and it was quivering. It was one of the creatures! Jake gasped for breath.
Im so sorry! Diane staggered back, looking terrified. I didnt realize it was so tender. I s-should have been more careful!
Its okay, said Connor in a voice he hoped was calm. He gave Jakes belly soothing rubs as Jake hummed angrily, a buzzing noise building in his throat. His face twitched, displaying his clear agitation. Connor tried to keep one eye on Jake and one on the offspring as the creature fluttered and tried to orientate itself. Where are we with that anesthetic? he called uneasily.
Ready. Rick hurried over to Jakes side, needle prepped.
Mason had procured a crate, and quickly slammed it down over the newborn bee-creature just before it could take off into the air. The creatures were practically popping out of Jake, and through whichever orifice they could manage. It would have been horrifying if it wasnt so fascinating.
Connor was just grateful that Jakes eyes were shut. Its okay, Connor murmured again. He continued to rub his hand up and down Jakes massive belly, perpetually stunned by how hot it was, how pleasant it felt, how full and plump it was beneath his fingers. Everythings going to be alright.
Jake released a hiss as he was pierced by the needle, but then he began to relax, and then he sunk against his pillow. His eyes fluttered open one more time before they shut, and all of his movements ceased, except for the heaves of his massive belly, and the shuddering movements within his bee-abdomen.
Everyone hurried to work.
-
When Jake awoke, he was only slightly sore. Mostly, he was groggy. He was no longer drenched in sweat, and his belly was no longer heaving. Instead he was sprawled on his side in a new room, tucked into a bed under a thin sheet. His arm beneath him was going numb, so Jake shifted. It took him a while to groggily get himself upright, breathing heavily, but not feeling the same sense of constant stimulation as before.
His body contracted, and he grimaced, quickly getting to work. Babies practically exploded out of his stinger opening, one after the next, pushing out of his throbbing opening. Jake panted as he worked, but he didnt feel overwhelmed or excessively hot as before. His belly heaved, but not with new life, just his breathing. The procedure had been a success. Jake felt a sense of wistfulness.
Once the episode ended, Jake lowered himself, and tried to relax. His stinger had sharpened, and he could feel it twitching behind him. His belly contracted gently as it pushed more young into his bee abdomen. But there wasnt the same pressure as before. His supply wasnt replenishing. In fact, he was probably becoming smaller. He absently massaged his beach ball of a belly.
As his newborn babies spread their wings and began to fly for the first timeat least two dozen of themsome immediately dove into his shirt and attack his breasts, drinking his honey. Others flew through the air and restlessly waited their turn, in the meantime exploring the room.
There was a rectangular opening with a flap in the wall. It was some sort of conduit, probably for soiled medical clothing. One of his offspring curiously probed at the door before flying through it. But it did not return.
Jake blinked. What? he began, but a proboscis was shoved into his mouth.
Holding his belly, he gulped down royal jelly was it was provided to him. He was hungry after all, and he needed his strength for more birthing. His young would accept nothing less.
His child latched its spindly legs to his face and shoved the proboscis deeper into his throat. Jake choked slightly, but did his best to keep up the pace. In the meantime, he just managed to catch as a second and third baby flew through the flap in the wall. He watched blankly.
